Brown dismisses Govt name-calling

Posted September 7, 2004 19:20:00

Greens leader Bob Brown says voters will not be fooled by a Government scare campaign against his party.

The Nationals' leader John Anderson yesterday compared the Greens to the Communist cause of the 1950s, comparing the minor party to a "watermelon" - green on the outside, but red on the inside.

Prime Minister John Howard has also said some of the Greens' policies are "kooky".

But Senator Brown says Australians do not appreciate the name-calling levelled at the Greens.

"I mean people roll their eyes about this sort of stuff coming from the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister of this country," he said.

"We've progressed far beyond that and it should be into a mature policy debate and I saw three polls today, the Greens are up in all of them."
