The Containers at Sierra Leone Ports Authority Ready for Scanning

Strange things continue to happen in this small West Africa State called Sierra Leone. Just few days back, a strange event left a number of workers at the Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA) in a state of perturb and wonder. The ban on timber export has been undermined by a group of exporters who were benefiting from their illegal action of exporting timbers over the past months, but ran out of luck last Friday when the deal backfired and exposed to the working public at the ports.

Some East Indian scrap metal exporters have been having a field day in their conspiratorial relationship with some government workers at the Customs and Excise Department, an arm of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), intertek and the Sierra Leone Ports Authority in undermining government economic policy on importation of timber.

The East Indian scrap exporters for the past months since the imposition of the ban on timber export has been declaring timbers in seal containers as scrap metals and the officials in charge of conducting examination and verification of the goods have been maintaining close eyes as a result of the alleged financial inducement they have been largely benefiting from.
