Jimmy Carter to U.S. Jews: Forgive me for stigmatizing Israel

Ex-president offers 'al-het', says 'we must recognize Israel's achievements under difficult circumstances'.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Jimmy Carter Israel news

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter has apologized to the American Jewish community for 'stigmatizing Israel' and asked for forgiveness for his actions, the JTA reported on Monday.

"We must recognize Israel's achievements under difficult circumstances, even as we strive in a positive way to help Israel continue to improve its relations with its Arab populations, but we must not permit criticisms for improvement to stigmatize Israel," Carter wrote in a letter to the JTA.

"As I would have noted at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but which is appropriate at any time of the year, I offer an Al Het for any words or deeds of mine that may have done so," Carter wrote, referring to the prayer said on Yom Kippur in which Jews ask God for forgiveness for any sins.

Carter has angered American Jews in the past by likening Israeli policy in the West Bank to apartheid South Africa in his book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid".

According to the JTA, Anti-Defamation League national director Abraham Foxman, who in the past claimed Carter's comments bordered on anti-Semitism, welcomed the former president's statement.

"We welcome any statement from a significant individual such as a former president who asks for Al Het," Foxman said. "To what extent it is an epiphany, time will tell. There certainly is hurt which needs to be repaired."

Carter has a tremendous amount of apologizing to do he was a failed president. His left wing ideology has shown his lack of leadership in the past and also his socialist views are horrible. The left wing does not know what is good for itself in its pacifistic way it creates a dangerous world for us all. You have to realize who your enemies are the left is really clueless they whine about other countries rights and are not concerned about their own well being. It is scary how radical left wingers similar to Jane Fonda and Jimmy Carter are more concerned about their enemies well being than our Country and in this case our Allies.

Carter is the worst president in modern American history. He is a complete embarassment to many Americans, and a disgustingly sad reflection on the stupidity of the Norwegian Parliament for their Nobel award to him. "The problem with our liberal friends is not (just) that they are ignorant. It is that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan

You don't repent by saying 'sorry' for sustained and damaging conduct. Carter made a fortune attacking Israel and deamonizing its Christian and Jewish supporters. Carter needs to detail, carefully and over a sustained period of time, what his misconduct was, and specifically retract his false and painful allegations against the Jewish state and its supporters. My guess is after the next elections are over he'll be back to his old behavior.

Everyone is entitled to repent of sin and be forgiven. However, key to repentence is turning from sin and changing not only your words but your deeds. Time will tell if President Carter repented of his sins against Israel or if it is only cheat talk. Pres. Carter has the rest of his life to prove he recognizes his past sins and has truly repented. All he has to do is to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. In the past, he has acted as if the Jews started the war and sought to drive the arabs into the sea instead of the other way around. He needs to publicly recognize that the Israelis have always been the ones seeking peace and have always sought to minimize civilian collateral damage while the arab terrorist, who have sought to inflict civilian caualties, have been supported financially, philosophically and religiously by the "arab street" and society. The arabs are taught to hate and to kill in their schools while Israelis seek peaceful conflict resolution.

When Carter thought he was though with politics, he believed he could finally be honest, and hence, his book, Peace, Not Apartheid. Now, his grandson wishes to run for Senator, and so Carter must now be dishonest because he knows well that his actions will have a direct affect on his grandson's political career. The timing is remarkable and his motivations are quite obvious. It is so disappointing how people will lose their principles and ethics for the sake of a political career, or in this case, for the sake of his grandson's career.

Jimmy Carter apologized for "stigmatizing" Israel. He did much more than that. He fanned the flames of hatred of all Jews by putting the stamp of the (former) President of the United States on all of the modern Jewish slanders. Of course he won't repeat Nazi slanders, the hate mongers are far more sophisticated in their lies. What are the modern lies. ... Well just read Jimmy's book. His apology is so tepid. If it is real (which I doubt), he has a lot more soul searching to do. I doubt he can ever confront just how hateful he was.

    • 20:27

This is no apology, or even a sincere request for forgiveness. For a confessional to be valid, there must be the acknowledgement that a sin was committed, wrong was done. Not, as in this case, wrong which "may" have been done. There isn't even the notion that there was any wrong involved. Carter remains every bit the vicious anti-Semite he's always been, his transparent effort at rehabilitation notwithstanding. He still refers to Israel's need to "continue to improve its relations with its Arab populations." How? By allowing more missiles to kill innocent Israelis? Carter is scum, and his sleazy mendacious trick should be viewed as such.

Kilpatrick pointed out the excesses in coverage. The president eventually answered all the serious charges to the satisfaction of both newspapers and most fair-minded observers, but the damage to his reelection bid was substantial. So Jimmy Carter was in the soup and even when he got out of it with the help of brother Billy who is one and the same. And there's more to it but time is not in ky favour. Jimmy has no apology on his website & refuted it Saturday was excited to read of Carter?s change of heart, and thought it might be on his website, but it is not! I?m sorry, but Carter?s repentance is not genuine! Read his OpEd published Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, by The Guardian, from his website, http://cartercenter.org/news/editorials_speeches/gaza-121909.html. I see nothing in it about a contrite, heartfelt apology! Carter continues to only have a one-sided negative image toward Israel, without recognizing, much less criticizing, any of the terror from the PA, Hamas or Syria. He lies about ?the long-standing basic requirements for peace commonly accepted within the international community, including that Israel's pre-1967 boundaries will prevail?, because the position of the UN when it passed Security Council Resolution 242 was that the 1967 boundaries were not defensible, so would have to change. Only recently has anyone even dared to propose this! Carter is wanting to make ?67 lines a pre-condition, along with ?declaring any further expansion of settlements illegal? ?within Palestine? and saying that Israel cannot retain ?control of East Jerusalem?. Hypocritically, he wants no conditions or accountability for the Arabs. He excuses the Arabs from responsibility because he blames everybody else. The loss of ?schools, hospitals and factories? was because Hamas used them for terrorism, including 800+ rockets into Israel. Sadly Carter doesn?t yet understand the true intention of his Islamic friends that still want to destroy Israel, and will let their own people suffer and die rather than stop fighting. Neither does Carter yet understand the true meaning of ?the season for forgiveness, reconciliation and peace?, so he can?t model it for angry Arabs who don?t understand it either, much less give up his morally inverted passion for stigmatizing Israel.

What a pathetic act of self-flagellation. I'm embarrassed for him. He's also being anti-semitic in conflating Jews and Israel. He was correct in referring to Israeli policy as apartheid, although that is perhaps unfair to apartheid South Africa. Pointing out that Israeli policy is sadistic and evil isn't anti-semitic, because the Jewish people aren't collectively responsible for Israeli policy. *I* am not the government of Israel. Sensible people realise this; apparently Carter doesn't. This is offensive. Now he needs to apologise to all peace activists, particularly those of us who are Jews, and to the Palestinians. He's abandoned us. Thanks a ton, Jimmy.

It disgusts me how cavalier Carter is in choosing to apologize, when he has steadfast refused to apologize for his anti-Semitic statements in the past that have stigmatized Israel, Israeli Jews and American Jews alike. Let's face it. Behind Carter's apology is his Grandson's bid to enter into politics. He doesn't want the Jewish community to take just revenge against him through his Grandson's possible election campaign. However, apology or not, we must boycott the Carter Institute and we should openly oppose his Grandson's bid for politics, sending this SOB a clear message that there will be no more Carter's in politics. His name is MUD!

Jimmy Carter has consistantly spoken against Israel and in favor of the Palestinians. According to him, the Palestinians can do no wrong, the Israelies nothing right. So, he can keep his apology because it only comes because of the criticism he received. He is a Jew hater and has always been so. He claims to be a Christian believer but doesn't act like one. As a Christian, he doesn;t seem to know much about the Word of God or Bible prophecy. The best thing he can do is to keep his mouth shut and keep his hateful opinions ot himself.

After all, Carter has spent years and oceans of print attacking Israel in the most unfair terms--if he really is apologetic I think we deserve to hear more of what he is actually apologizing for, what he said wrong, and what he will now say or do to make amends. This brief exculpation smacks of expediency unless it's followed up and elaborated upon very significantly so that it demonstrates real sincerity. Otherwise, not interested.

There is a parable about a man who went to his rabbi asking for forgiveness for having spoken slanderous gossip. The rabbi tells the man to go home, cut open his pillows, and scatter the feathers to the wind. The man does so and returns to the rabbi, who tells him to go out, gatehr all the feathers, and stuff them back into the pillows. "But that's impossible," says the man, "those feathers have spread everywhere by now." The rabbi responds, "so are words of malicious gossip - once they're out, they can't be gathered back." So it is with Mr. Carter's words. The damage is done.

The Swedish journalists claimed that Palestinians were killed to take their organs. The report tells that first those people were already dead and second - the people in question were not only the Palestinians. See the difference? In any way any organ extraction should be done with permission to either next of kin or according to the Living Will of those people if any.

Jimmy Carter is and has always been an appeaser whether kissing up to commies in the Soviet Union, ayatollahs in Iran, or "Palestinians" (a word appropriated by Arabs to insult Jews) whose agenda has never changed. The Nazis wanted Europe and the Arabs want the Middle East to be simply "JUDEN FREI!" Winston Churchill said, "Appeasement is continuing to feed a crocodile hoping you'll be eaten last." Study the reports from Israel. They allude to corneas and skin fragments, hardly comparable to "organs". But also pay careful attention that these tissues were removed from the corpses of Israelis as well as Arabs and there is vehement denial that there were any instances of Arabs being killed in order to get these tissues-- the outrageous claim that appeared in the Aftonblad newspaper article and perpetrated by people such as yourself. Note too that the above practice was discontinued 8 or 9 years ago. Yes it is inexcusable that fragments were removed without permission and that has been admitted and apologised for. But the blood libel charge about Palestinians being killed for their organs is an outrageous allegation, in no way supported by the recent disclosures. Nor is there any evidence about ORGAN harvesting.

    • RfaelMoshe
    • 22.12.09
    • 20:31

As applied to the situation between the Palestinians and Israel which is based on conflict, nationalism and security, the use of thelegal term of art "Apartheid" is simpy libelous. "Apartheid" requires the INTENT to institutionally discriminate based on "race." The Old South Africa was quite open about their intent to discriminate based on "race." In stark contrast,Israel's motivation to separate from Palestinians, both stated and actual, is based on security. The Palestinians have agreed, via their statements and actions, that they are, in fact, dangerous and a threat to Israel's security. At the same time, Jews and Arabs agree that they are the descendants of a common ancestor. "Apartheid" is libelous in this situation as it attributes racist intent where there is none. It has become another word robbed of its true meaning by the naive,Western apologists for the Palestinians who now just use it as a "power word" to trump debates about Israel when they have nothing factual to say.

Like all such confessions, he needs to specifically elaborate the nature of his wrongs and pledge to take action to correct those wrongs and then provide evidence of the correction if he wants forgiveness. JUSTICE is part of the forgiveness process and it requires mitigation of the damage. That could take Carter a lifetime he doesn't have.

Mr. Carter, a self proclaimed sinner, is late. The damage is done. If he wants to repent, he should stand up in front of the world and recant his antisemitic view and also write a new book about the futility of his old views. A private "Mea Culpa" sent to Mr. Foxman is the cowards way out.

We should not be afraid to use the word apartheid I agree but in the right context and there is no comparison between Israel & South Africa. In SA blacks were the majority but they were barely citizens & had no rights. They were not allowed in the same naeghborhoods as whites They could not travel on the same busses. They were not allowed to do certain jobs They could not vote If the demonstrated against their life they were arrested even peaceful demonstration. In Israel The arabs minority can live next door to jews if they choose. They can travel on the same busses They are allowed to do any job if they have the qualifications. They can vote & there are about 10 arabs in the Knesset, under Olmert there was even an arab in the cabinet. They are allowed peaceful protest. The palestinians are not Israelis so the fact that its one rule for them & another for an Israeli is not apartheid its the fact they are not Israeli citizens. You want apartheid look to the arab world.

Carter's apology is directed to people, not policies. Israeli State policies, not the Jewish people of Israel and the US, are at the core of the Apartheid "colonialist" expansion. The claim that Israel is the only functioning Middle East democratic state means that ultimately it is the Israeli people, with the support of their Jewish-American brethren, who will end this evil when they recognize that a new post-Zionist Israeli political narrative is essential for Israel's survival.

President Carter might have realized that no country is perfect, not even Israel, but has to act in order to protect its citicens in this hostile envirement. To some of us only the palestinians are victims and do all the right moves! It neads too to fight but also to tango!

"From the facts available, the Mission finds that the rocket and mortars attacks, launched by Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, have caused terror in the affected communities of southern Israel and in Israel as a whole. Furthermore, it is the Mission's view that the mortars and rockets are uncontrolled and uncontrollable, respectively. This indicates the commission of an indiscriminate attack on the civilian population of southern Israel, a war crime, and may amount to crimes against humanity." Direct quote from the Goldstone report. Obviously, Joe, it's time to put Palestinian leaders and field commanders on trial for war crimes. Since these attacks occurred for decades before Cast Lead, it means both Hamas and Fatah leaders must be put on trial. If the shoe fits...

Jimmy Carter grew up in similar conditions to me. He had the benefit of a Christian upbringing, good schools, good role models and a free country. Then he went into politics. He was a failure as the govenor of Georgia, then he became president, it only got worse. After he failed as president, and in the process greatly harmed this nation, he headed to the private sector. When he got there, all he could think of was how Israel tried to defend themselves and would not let him sell their very existence during the Camp David Accords, then he got angry and blamed all of this failings on Israel. For the last 15 years, he's has railed against Israel at every opportunity, he's even put it in print in his horribly skewed book. He has actively worked against Israel, many times. Now, for what ever reason, the failed governor, president and preacher is making the smallest concession possible by offering Al Het. By his actions we know him and that's enough for us.

    • 16:08

To My Fellow Jews South of the 49th: Accept this man's apology on one condition, he agrees to debate his book, Palestine: Peace not Apartheid, against Alan Dershowitz (AD). Carter, was reproached by AD for his title, to which Carter retorted that the purpose of the title is to spur debate. Interestingly Carter has vehemently refused to debate Mr. AD on the topic, once even leaving a conference where the two were set to speak, AD following Carter, to ensure that no form of debate ensued. Dershowitz in his book, "the case against Israel's Enemies" devotes his first chapter to scrutizing Carter's statements, actions and "charitable" institutions. The Appendix of the book is an assault on the factual mistakes found in Carter's Palestine: Peace not Apartheid. So If you want to make amens, how about a simple debate, and if you are proven wrong, you will issue corrections to your works and condemns the false information written, perhaps even offer a reason as to why

Israel offered the arabs 90% of the WB and they said NO!!! Read The missing Peace - by Dennis Ross. Dennis Ross is as left as Beilin, Sarid and clearly supports 2 states at the 67 borders and he was chief negotiator for 12 years- Arafat said no to greater than 95% of the WB. Bibi, Sharon, Olmert all Likud members openly support the 2 state solution. If the Arabs support Hamas that calls for death to all Israelis - They can't criticize Israel for not giving them access to Tel Aviv to carry out their attacks. Israelis has every right to reside everywhere in the WB just as arabs reside in TA, Haifa, Negev and Galil. The Israelis in the WB will continue to be Israeli citizens until the final borders are agreed upon by a RELIABLE STABLE PALESTINIAN REGIME.

In all fields Israel's morals shines in the most outstanding way. -Healthcare-Israel has opened it's Hospitals to all even it's greatest enemies at time of war! -Criminal Justice - Israel has given fair trials to even the most viscious terrorist! -Education- Israel has shared it's resources with Israeli Arabs as well as with Arabs of the west Bank. In so many spheres Israel has shared it's knowlege and resources many impovershed countries be it in Health, Science, Technology, Communications, education, commerce, agriculture and so much more.

No apartheid, no genocide, nothing but a harsh Israel response to Palestinian terrorism. In several occasions Israel overeacted and has committed crimes. However, President Carter knows quite well that in comparison with American overeaction in Iraq Afghanistan etc, Israel "crimes" are of low intensity and basically justified. Pres Carter understands that Israel is actually dealing with terrorist criminals and reacts as anybody should react against criminals. Pres Carter knows that the wall of separation has no racist fundations. However, he decided to blast Israel. He should indeed apoligize now.

So Mr Carter, whose center for human rights is mostly financially backed by the Saudi's (ironically a country with few rights & certainly none of them humane), decided to say sorry to all of us for always attacking Israel with his verbal assualts & his book (no intention of reading...or rather falling asleep to his book of misinformation). The fact that he's in bed with the Saudi's (a country, like its Arab neighbors, that never recognized Jews as anything but 2nd class citizens...similar to apartheid states) made his apology even more meaningless. Stop playing politics with us & instead apologize on behalf of those Saudi's who flew planes into the WTC on 9/11...stay consistent otherwise your Saudi pimps might put the smack down on you. Everyone lets not forget about the lack of human rights in Saudi Arabia...hookers like Jimmy get bitch-slapped if they get out of line so we shouldn't expect too many more apologies from him.

Mr. Carter looked for some indication that the Israeli government, during the time of his presidency, considered peace to be of greater value than land, he did not find it. President Obama does not, and evidently will, find any such indication from today's government words or actions. Greed, the total absence of the rules of cause and effect, and a perverted understanding of Jewish law and ethics are what constitute the guiding spirit of Israel's policy vis a-vis the Palestinians. Israel would be better served by the current American administration's teaching the Likud and its partners that 'real politic' is not Hollywood false front. Ignoring our gradual loss of credibility in the world at large is not a recipe for success.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2006/dec/20/20061220-092736-3365r/ "To understand what feeds former president Jimmy Carter's anti-Israeli frenzy, look at his early links to Arab business. Between 1976-1977, the Carter family peanut business received a bailout in the form of a $4.6 million, "poorly managed" and highly irregular loan from the National Bank of Georgia (NBG). According to a July 29, 1980 Jack Anderson expose in The Washington Post, the bank's biggest borrower was Mr. Carter, and its chairman at that time was Mr. Carter's confidant, and later his director of the Office of Management and Budget, Bert Lance. At that time, Mr. Lance's mismanagement of the NBG got him and the bank into trouble. Agha Hasan Abedi, the Pakistani founder of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), known as the bank "which would bribe God," came to Mr. Lance's rescue making him a $100,000-a-year consultant. Abedi then declared: "we would never talk about exploiting his relationship with the president." Next, he introduced Mr. Lance to Saudi billionaire Gaith Pharaon, who fronted for BCCI and the Saudi royal family. In January 1978, Abedi paid off Mr. Lance's $3.5 million debt to the NBG, and Pharaon secretly gained control over the bank. Mr. Anderson wrote: "Of course, the Saudis remained discretely silent... kept quiet about Carter's irregularities... [and] renegotiated the loan to Carter's advantage." There is no evidence that the former president received direct payment from the Saudis. But "according to... the bank files, [it] renegotiated the repayment terms... savings... $60,000 for the Carter family... The President owned 62% of the business and therefore was the largest beneficiary." Pharaon later contributed generously to the former president's library and center. When Mr. Lance introduced Mr. Carter to Abedi, the latter gave $500,000 to help the former president establish his center at Emory University. Later, Abedi contributed more than $10 million to Mr. Carter's different projects. Even after BCCI was indicted ? and convicted -? for drug money laundering, Mr. Carter accepted $1.5 million from Abedi, his "good friend." A quick survey of the major contributors to the Carter Center reveals hundreds of millions of dollars from Saudi and Gulf contributors. But it was BCCI that helped Mr. Carter established his center. BCCI's origins were primarily ideological. Abedi wanted the bank to reflect the supra-national Muslim credo and "the best bridge to help the world of Islam, and the best way to fight the evil influence of the Zionists." "-

Regardless of how one feels about Israel or Jimmy Carter, one must acknowledge that this article is misleading. Carter begs atonement "for any words or deeds ... which MAY have done this" (stigmatized Israel). Any journalist, who misrepresents this quote as meaning "Forgive me for stigmatizing Israel" is misusing his platform. Unfortunately this lack of interest for precision in language has become a hallmark of journalism worldwide (also of Talkback comments.) Carters seems to attempt to use precise, differentiated language, but as all of us, he often fails. At any rate, humanity's difficulties with communication and understanding only fuel animosity and ultimately war. Journalists and commentators should bear that in mind as they write.

That history can never be an excuse for Israels actions of today, but it at least may once in a while serve as an explanation....

Either we occupy the territories temporary for security reasons and will end the occupation when the conditions are ripe, or we annex the territories and grant all its residents equal rights of Israeli citizenship. But when we colonize these territories with the intention to hold this territories forever and at the same time don't grant citizenship to its residents - it's called apartheid. How else would you call the situation, when there are two villages sitting next to each other, and the residents of one village have full rights of Israeli citizenship, while the residents of the nearby village have no citizenship rights in any sovereign state?

Carter needs to ask Israelis for forgiveness too

While this is a step in the right direction, he needs to also ask Israelis for forgiveness for calling Israel an apartheid state. Unlike the arabs states that Jews were kicked out of & are denied the right to live in or own property, arabs live among Jews in communities throughout Israel.

I agree with Eran, words don't mean a thing. You should have all of your libelous books pulled from the shelves.

Israel has been the unfortunate recipient of years of anti-Semitic comments by Mr. Carter. He forgets that Israel gave up the Sinai, full of oil. Israel has always given up things for peace but the Arabs rarely give peace even in the face of Israel's generosity. Yasser Arafat was offered 67 borders slightly modified and instead he launched a war. The Arabs who call themselves Palestinians are their own worst enemy. If they really wanted peace they would approach the Israelis sincerely as Anwar Sadat did and King Hussein did. End the slander and let's have a peace deal.

Why is calling Israel an apartheid state "Racist"? Isn't that like saying it's racist towards whites to accuse South Africa of anti-black discrimination? how absurd. Why do supporters of Israel say all criticism of Israel is rooted in a phobia towards Jews? It's stupid.

    Israel Self Stigmatizes

Jimmy Carter has nothing to apologize for, at least not to the Israelis. Israelis and Jews who were offended by the former President's reference to Apartheid should be actually be offended by the conditions that Israel created to 'earn' that well deserved description. Israel's stigma is born in what it continues to do to the Palestinians!
