This will be the first solo exhibition in many decades of the works of Gustaw Gwozdecki, an exceptional Polish painter of the first half of the 20th century, outstanding portrait artist, frequenter of Parisian and New York salons.

This will be the first solo exhibition in many decades of the works of Gustaw Gwozdecki, an exceptional Polish painter of the first half of the 20th century, outstanding portrait artist, frequenter of Parisian and New York salons. The exhibit at the National Museum in Poznan will include works on loan from Paris and New York institutions and collections.

Gwozdecki has yet to be given a permanent position and appropriate praise in the annals of Polish art history. The scattering of the artist's works throughout the world (primarily among French and American collections) and the fact that a section of his artistic oeuvre was lost during World War II are the primary reasons for this.

This exhibition, prepared by the National Museum in Poznan, is part of a broad scientific and exhibit-based program aimed at reestablishing outstanding, yet forgotten artists to their appropriate place in history.

Although Gwozdecki settled in Paris permanently in 1903 and then moved on to New York in 1916, he never severed his ties with Poland. He remained particularly close to his native city of Warsaw, enjoyed a strong relationship with Krakow through intense links to the FORMISTS, and remained very much in touch with institutions and individuals in the city of Poznan. He exhibited in Poznan several times (in 1911, 1913, 1914 and 1925), published reviews of Parisian exhibitions and other texts on art in some of Poznan's cultural periodicals, delivered lectures in the city on many occasions, and above all, organized an exhibition of his works in 1908. This exhibition was organized by Gwozdecki in a very literal sense, as in addition to providing a group of paintings, drawings and sculptures that were representative of his oeuvre at the time, the artist also personally renovated the exhibition rooms of the city's Art Salon. As with the other presentations of the artist's works in Poland, this exhibition garnered tremendous attention.

The current exhibition will include the majority of the artist's extant works (approximately 50 oil paintings, 120 drawings, gouaches and prints, and two sculptures). The works were loaned from public collections in Poland and beyond - among them those of the National Museums in Warsaw and Krakow, the Historical and Literary Society in Paris and the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York - as well as a range of private collections, including that of Wojciech Fibak. A significant share of Gwozdecki's oeuvre, however, remains dispersed throughout the world.

Legendary New York underground artist Meredith Monk, hip-hop group from Moscow and a Canadian singer Jorane, will make guest performances at the 32nd Actor's Song Reviev (Przegląd Piosenki Aktorskiej) in Wrocław. The Festival kicks off on March 18 and will run through March 27, 2011.
A Ukrainian director and producer Serhij Proskurnia announced that a feature film about Polish writer Bruno Schulz will be shot in Ukraine this year. Schulz was born and lived in Drohobycz (presently Ukraine). Proskurnia revealed also the working title of the film: "Waiting for the Massiah".
A 30-second short film by Michał Wilczek about the work conditions and wages in Europe and India has won the Sukuma Millennium Award. The award will be presented to Wilczek on February 3 by Moby, who also wrote the music for the film.
Roman Polański and Paweł Edelman, the director and cinematographer of "The Ghost Writer" received nominations for the Cesar Award, presented annualy by the French Academy of Arts and Film. The film won eight nominations alltogether, including the the Best Film. The 36th Cesar gala will take place on February 25 in Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris.
The film about Lech Wałęsa, the legendary leader of the Solidarność trade union, will be finished in autumn 2011, announced the director Andrzej Wajda. The script for "We, the Polish People" was written by Janusz Głowacki.
