El Camino Real High briefly on lockdown, man with gun reportedly seen on campus

El Camino High Real High School and Hale Middle School in Woodland Hills were briefly placed on lockdown Wednesday after a man with a gun was reported in the El Camino faculty parking lot, Los Angeles police and school district officials said.

The incident was reported at 2:42 p.m. at the campus at Valley Circle and Burbank boulevards, said LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman.  The sighting was reported near the end of the school day and it was not immediately clear how many students were kept in their classrooms.

By 3:15 p.m., a student had been detained by police and officers were reopening the campuses, Officer Sara Faden said.

Wednesday's lockdown comes one week after a school police officer was shot outside El Camino. The officer survived and police launched a massive manhunt that shut down seven square miles of the west San Fernando Valley and kept nine schools in the area under lockdown for several hours.

Student shot in neck at Gardena High: 'I thought I was going to die'

One of two students hit by bullet in a Gardena High School classroom is speaking out, saying he thought he was going to die after being hit in the neck.

"I heard a loud boom, and I saw smoke. I thought it could have been a bomb, or an earthquake," Trendell Gholar told KCBS-TV's Pat Harvey in an interview. "All I knew I was down and there was a lot of blood."

"I thought I was going to die. My heart was beating so fast," he said.

Authorities say a gun brought to school by a classmate accidentally went off when the boy put his backpack down. The 17-year-old was charged Thursday with two felonies: possessing a firearm in a school zone and discharging a firearm in a school zone.

A second classmate, shot in the head, remained in critical condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center with a skull fracture and brain trauma. A spokeswoman for the hospital said she has been able to respond to basic commands.

South Gate High is on a 'precautionary' lockdown [Updated]

About 200 students, teachers and administrators at South Gate High School were on a "precautionary" lockdown Friday night after someone reported seeing a male brandishing a gun outside the school, officials said.

South Gate police and school officers have done a preliminary search of the campus and haven't found anything suspicious, said Susan Cox, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Students will be held a little longer as officers make sure it is safe to leave, she said.

Most students had already left for the day when the gunman reportedly was seen off-campus at 3:30 p.m., Cox said. Those students remaining are involved in athletics and after-school activities, she said.

No shots were fired and no injuries have been reported, Cox said.

[Updated at 6:30 p.m.: The lockdown has been lifted and students are being allowed to go home. Three suspects have taken into custody, Cox said. No weapon has been found.]

Student held in gun incident at Willowbrook school

A 17-year-old high school student was arrested after he was intercepted trying to bring a loaded handgun onto the campus of a South Los Angeles-area continuation school, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said Friday.

The incident, which occurred Thursday morning at Cesar Chavez Continuation High School in unincorporated Willowbrook, came two days after two students were wounded -- one of them critically -- when a Gardena High School student reached into his backpack and accidentally fired a gun that was stashed inside, authorities said.

The 17-year-old suspect, who has not been identified because of his age, has been charged as a juvenile by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office with two possession-related criminal counts. Prosecutors also are seeking to have the boy tried as an adult.

In the latest case, sheriff's detectives were near the campus attempting to locate a witness to an unrelated crime when they saw a 17-year boy acting suspiciously about 8:15 a.m. near the entrance to the Cesar Chavez campus, which is part of the Compton Unified School District, said sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker.

L.A. councilman wants to ban 'open carry' handguns

Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti moved Friday to ban "open carry" handguns within the city limits.

Under current state law, residents can openly carry legally owned handguns that are unloaded and kept in a holster. Ammunition may be carried separately on the holster.

That state law has come under scrutiny in the aftermath of several recent high-profile shooting incidents, especially the Jan. 8 rampage in Tucson that left six dead and critically injured U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Garcetti submitted what he called a "common sense" motion that asks his council colleagues to approve such a ban. In practice, the measure would restrict the carrying of such weapons to authorized law enforcement personnel or holders of concealed weapons permits.

"No one needs a gun on their hip when walking down the street or going to the store," Garcetti said. "The open carry of a handgun can be intimidating and threaten public safety."
