Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran has been called into England's Under-21 squad for Tuesday's friendly with Italy after nine players pulled out.

McEachran, 17, made his debut for Stuart Pearce's team against Germany last November.

Leeds midfielder Jonathan Howson, 22, is another new face in the squad for the game at Empoli.

Defenders Martin Kelly, Micah Richards and Chris Smalling are among the players ruled out of the trip.

In addition, West Ham's James Tomkins, who missed his club's defeat by Birmingham on Sunday, and Arsenal Kieran Gibbs are absent.

And striker Daniel Sturridge, who has scored in his first two games on loan at Bolton from Chelsea, Sunderland's Jordan Henderson and Villa's Fabian Delph also miss out with knocks.

Danny Welbeck, Danny Rose, Michael Mancienne, Tom Cleverley and Phil Jones had all previously declared themselves unavailable.

Barnsley's Kieran Trippier, Leicester City's Kyle Naughton, Crystal Palace man James Vaughan have been brought in alongside Howson and McEachran.

The game, England's first in 2011, continues the build-up to this summer's under-21 Championships in Denmark, with further friendlies set to follow.

England Under-21 squad: Fielding (Blackburn), Loach (Watford), Steele (Middlesbrough); Bennett (Middlesbrough), Trippier (Barnsley), Naughton (Leicester), Mee (Manchester City); Albrighton (Aston Villa), Cork (Chelsea), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Southampton), McEachran (Chelsea), Lansbury (Arsenal), Howson (Leeds), Muamba (Bolton), Rodwell (Everton), Sinclair (Swansea); Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Rodriguez (Burnley), Vaughan (Crystal Palace).
