Do you know about your local
farmers markets in Queens? You might not know that there are also
12 local CSA groups in the borough: that's Community Support Agriculture.
With a CSA, you sign up for a weekly share of the organic produce from a farm, usually one out on eastern Long Island or New Jersey. Then once a week for the season, you collect, from a local drop-off site, your box of just-picked veggies and fruits. For instance, in August the Golden Earthworm Farm sends strawberries, beets, broccoli, swiss chard, and lettuce to the Forest Hills and Douglaston CSAs. If you cook often, it's a good deal, and you're supporting local agriculture.
The late winter -- February and March -- is the prime time to join a CSA. That's when the upcoming season and suppliers are getting sorted out. Contact your local CSA this week to find out more.
