Open Letter from CEO Stephen Elop, Nokia and CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft

GLOBAL – Today in London, our two companies announced plans for a broad strategic partnership that combines the respective strengths of our companies and builds a new global mobile ecosystem. The partnership increases our scale, which will result in significant benefits for consumers, developers, mobile operators and businesses around the world. We both are incredibly excited about the journey we are on together.

While the specific details of the deal are being worked out, here’s a quick summary of what we are working towards:

• Nokia will adopt Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy, innovating on top of the platform in areas such as imaging, where Nokia is a market leader.

• Nokia will help drive and define the future of Windows Phone. Nokia will contribute its expertise on hardware design, language support, and help bring Windows Phone to a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies.

• Nokia and Microsoft will closely collaborate on development, joint marketing initiatives and a shared development roadmap to align on the future evolution of mobile products.

• Bing will power Nokia’s search services across Nokia devices and services, giving customers access to Bing’s next generation search capabilities. Microsoft adCenter will provide search advertising services on Nokia’s line of devices and services.

• Nokia Maps will be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services. For example, Maps would be integrated with Microsoft’s Bing search engine and adCenter advertising platform to form a unique local search and advertising experience.

• Nokia’s extensive operator billing agreements will make it easier for consumers to purchase Nokia Windows Phone services in countries where credit-card use is low.

• Microsoft development tools will be used to create applications to run on Nokia Windows Phones, allowing developers to easily leverage the ecosystem’s global reach.

• Microsoft will continue to invest in the development of Windows Phone and cloud services so customers can do more with their phone, across their work and personal lives.

• Nokia’s content and application store will be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace for a more compelling consumer experience.

We each bring incredible assets to the table. Nokia’s history of innovation in the hardware space, global hardware scale, strong history of intellectual property creation and navigation assets are second to none. Microsoft is a leader in software and services; the company’s incredible expertise in platform creation forms the opportunity for its billions of customers and millions of partners to get more out of their devices.

Together, we have some of the world’s most admired brands, including Windows, Office, Bing, Xbox Live, NAVTEQ and Nokia. We also have a shared understanding of what it takes to build and sustain a mobile ecosystem, which includes the entire experience from the device to the software to the applications, services and the marketplace.

Today, the battle is moving from one of mobile devices to one of mobile ecosystems, and our strengths here are complementary. Ecosystems thrive when they reach scale, when they are fueled by energy and innovation and when they provide benefits and value to each person or company who participates. This is what we are creating; this is our vision; this is the work we are driving from this day forward.

There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them.

There will be challenges. We will overcome them.

Success requires speed. We will be swift.

Together, we see the opportunity, and we have the will, the resources and the drive to succeed.

“…which will result in significant benefits for consumers, developers, …”

Actually, you’ve fragmented your developers again – I work in a Windows world, I’ve developed on .NET for a long time. I’ve even developed for Windows Mobile in the past.

The answer was Qt – what you’ve done is cause a whole new set of questions to be asked.

I feel I know less today than I knew yesterday.

Is Meego getting dropped? Will Nokia no longer user Symbian for feature phones? Does Qt fit Nokia’s future plans with Microsoft? Are there going to be layoffs at Nokia? Was the N9-00 cancelled? What is Nokia getting out of the deal, besides the 3rd platform?

It’s a gamble but it could very well work. Nokia desperately needs a new OS, fast – and WP7 is actually very good. Better than going with Android, which was the only other realistic alternative, but already a crowded marketplace.

As someone who grew up with Nokia but caught the iPhone wave, I am excited by this prospect. I believe that the potential of this partnership is more than enough to change the industry dynamics. But potential is one thing, execution is another. I stand by with my credit card to buy a brilliant ecosystem that you can offer…please don’t make me wait or disappoint me when you deliver.

  • Kari Nousiainen

  • http://twitter.com/hawkstah Hawk

Nokia, you were sitting on a gold mine with maemo/meego, all you had to do was to invest some resources in properly mining it. Instead, you decided to pick up a piece of turd from the sidewalk.

Since Meego is no longer the focus, I don’t think I’ll be buying a Nokia phone or even holding out for it. WebOS/Android, here I come.

  • Alec

How the hell did you think that target group of high-end devices would remain when you first brought Linux to the company and now replacing it with Windows.
Why change one burning platform with another burning one?

I’ve been a Nokia fan for ages and have always had hope in Nokia. But this is the end…

  • http://segfault.co.in Rahul

What does this mean for the future of Symbian^3? Will we ever see a PR2.0 or any further updates to Symbian? What will happen to the large number of Nokia employees working on Symbian? And what happens to Meego?

    I don’t like this Nokia, I just don’t.

All the NOKIA fan boys whining about this — maybe you should’ve bought a terrible Nokia smartphone instead of the Android/iPhone you have in your pocket.

To the rest of the consumers in the smart phone market. This is a glorious day. Nokia’s hardware in an ecology that isn’t completely out of touch with reality. I, for one, am excited.

In answer to your first question – I would suspect the answer is “Yes”. (Microsoft’s not so enthused about open source and Linux).

“Was the N9-00 cancelled?” We may see something running WP7 with an N badge.

I’d also love to know what “…primary smartphone strategy…” really means. “Primary” implies a “secondary” exists – and that just nuts.

OK, that it was. N8 was my last Nokia! Just another silly hardware manufacturer – WP7?! A system which is so closed and inovationfree like no other?
There is a fine S^3 which just need h UX-Update. There is a fantastic open Meego with a stunning NokiaHandset UX which leaked in a video. Nokia was a great company because theire independence. Now its just another manufacturer like Samsung, HTC, and theire competitors know how to build its devices made for other Systems for years – theirs no need for a Nokia in future now.
I wait for a N9 (or how you call the MeeGo phone) until now, cause its a OPEN System, with a beautiful UX, and a perfect developing with QT.

But now WP7 really? How stupid a person can be?

  • Anonymous

i guest they will tell more at the conference, but there is no reason for meego if windows is primary platform (symbian will be legacy platform for a while though, slowly abandoned) :-(

Oh my god… I have been optimistic, and for what ???? For that !!!
Unbelievable to adopt an OS which is just a new start with big hardware limitation and who had not a good launch outside the US.

Well it’s time to move on, glad to see that Ansi is not part of this and you know what, I think HP have now the best future with Palm webOS they acquired last year.

Good luck anyway but well, sorry but I feel betrayed and all this seems quite a nonsense really (and when I read the previous comment, seems that you have not listen to your customer just to pleased a little part of the world who doesn’t lead the world anymore !!)

I can’t think a worst movement by Nokia.

Mobile success is all about convincing developers to use your platform. Searching on a major IT-search-engine I found at this moment:

    Symbian related vacancies: 31
    “Windows mobile” related vacancies: 29
    “QT” related vacancies: 19
    “Android” related vacancies: 120
    “Javascript” related vacancies: 1387

Quite easy. Android was successful because it default to Java, not C/C++ for development and that mean 10x more developers using the platform. The best movement for Nokia would have been to make a javascript front-end to Symbian & Qt (aka, Qt Quick). That will have boosted the number of developers interested on Nokia devices.

Microsoft Mobile alliance is a “run away to nowhere”.

  • Djengis

Well if this has to make any sense then MeeGo+Qt has to go – and it really tears my heart out – I really love them both.

Then this sentense : “There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them.” which suggests Nokia killing of everything – S60+S3+MeeGo+Qt, perhaps even S40.

I believe this is good for Microsoft. I am not sure if this is anyhow good for Nokia. If they slowly drop other software platforms they will be the same hardware manufacturer they were 10-15 years ago. The only issue with MS platform from the manufacturer perspective is that there is very little you can do to sell your phone. They all look the same have almost the same hardware specs and I guess there is little you can do to stand out from the crowd.

For every person that has commented here proclaiming the death of Nokia I have seen at least 5 elsewhere saying that such a move could be Nokia’s saving grace; personally, I have always liked the build quality of Nokia hardware and their designs but have been swayed by the pull of larger ecosystems.

Let’s say Nokia went for Android, where would that have put them? They’d be entering a crowded market with competitors who can aggresively compete on all sides (cost, features etc). The WP7 hardware ecosystem is lacking at the moment but the software shows a lot of promise, right now I use an LG Optimus 7 and I find the system a joy to use 90% of the time- hopefully, working with Microsoft, Nokia can give the OS that extra 10%.

Symbian and Meego never stood a chance. Android wouldn’t have offered any benefit.

On the other hand: WP7 needs Nokia as much as Nokia needs WP7.

To all the Symbian fanboys, face reality… It was not competitve. Nokia lost gobs of marketshare and was headed nowhere. Meego? Do you really think it would have been competitive in today’s marketplace? Answer: Meego would have failed like WebOS will fail. MS can finance WP7 indefinitely and they have the drive to be successful in the smartphone market.

As for the Android fanboys, how would this help Nokia differentiate itself in the marketplace? If it went with Android, Nokia would have entered a lowest common denominator market and have to compete on low price and low margin. How can you beat Samsung and HTC and Huawei on prices?

Now whether you like WP7 or not, you have to admit it is new take on Smartphone UI that will be competitive with iOS and Android once their app marketplace ramps up. And Nokia is entering at a key time for WP7 when they can make a difference in the nascent OS.

I hope this is the start of a new beginning. I was a loyal Nokia customer for 12 years until last week. Why? Because after owning 10 different Nokia handsets during this time, I made the “mistake” of buying your flagship N97. Never have I previously had the misfortune to own such a terrible phone. The slider broke, the lens cover scratched the lens, the GPS didn’t work, the battery indicator fluctuated between full/empty and it randomly rebooted several times a day. Needless to say, I am now the proud owner of an iPhone 4.

That does exist, kinda, its called WRT. The problem is, that the underlying OS is _so_ bad, that things developed with Javascript that run blazingly fast with iPhone and Android phones crawl on even the high-end Symbian^3 phones. Personally I think this move that Nokia made is disastrous for their future and means even more bloat on the software side.

Bye bye Nokia, this was the final nail to the coffin, our company’s Nokia development will stop once the current projects are finished. We will simply not target Nokia platforms anymore, its a loosing battle.

Feature phones with Symbian are still quite profitable for Nokia, so I doubt that they will stop selling those.

What I think this means is:
    * Nokia will cut funding to software development and focus on Hardware (this means layoffs).
    * Microsoft will front the cash for marketing of WP7 Nokia phones and initial integration.
    * Nokia will continue to ship cheap feature phones with Symbian and release a Meego table in Q4 (probably no phone).

Seriously, joining WP7 is the worst move Nokia can ever do. It clearly shows that the CEO doesn’t recognize the company’s strength which is its emerging and continuously improved ecosystem. Going WP7 spell the end of their great amount of time spent on QT to mitigate existing developer from Symbian to MeeGo. Stephen Elop clearly demonstrated as someone who wants to change for the sake of changing without weighing the consequences of such a move.

    BING sucks.
    WP7 sucks.
Goodbye long batterylifetimes, Symbian was the only real solution for that on smartphones.
Meego was great for not just handheld platforms but also TV’s and much more.
Xbox sucks. No need for Xbox “live” paid services when you have free Sony Playstsation services.
In reality S40 is more of a smartphone than Android and iPhone. AND much more battery-efficient.

I have been using nokia since 1996 and just went to iphone last year. This is the BEST news yet. Symbian was a product of its time, like the almighty DOS or even WIN 3.1. Nokia just did what Steve Jobs did to Apple when he wiped the slate clean first with OSX and then when he moved from PowerPC to Intel chips, so strangely, Jobs jumped off his “platforms” twice….:) I for one look forward to returning to Nokia by 2012. All the best!

    I can’t think of a worse thing.

    Xbox = crap
    Microsoft = immoral

    Nokia what have you done?

Stephen Elop still works for Microsoft and it is blind to say the least, Nokia was the only company with an ecoystem besides Apple, Symbian sold so much more smartphones of symbian 3 with just one hardware maker, while MS did not sell phones even to its employees, so sad he throw away and declared defeated Nokia, so blind he can not see the power of symbian, windows phone is pretty but useless, no developers, no difference among makers, windows phone can not handle memory cards the way it should.

If they were loosing market share, they are now diging the tomb, amazing, it is simply amazing how easy MS took over Nokia, without giving a dime, MS OS was a huge HUGE FLOP, and the solution came easy, Steve Ballmer is a genious, he sent an employee loyal enough to “direct” Nokia and give it in a silver plater so the MS OS fail can be sold somewhere.

Well at least Samsung and Sony Ericsson are launching cooler phones every day. I’m SAD and disapointed, instead of fight. Nokia will loose market share worldwide by millions, and win a few in the USA, great job Elop, next year Nokia will have like 10% of the market share, maybe still in black numbers but not enough, the Samsung era just began, because MS will not make it, Nokia is lost, Apple ia niche, Android is way to cannibalizing. Then Nokis “heads” will go to another platform, loosing even more Market Share. But hey!! USA media will be happy because after all this they will see a few Nokia phones in the USA, they LOVE LG AND SONY ERICSSON the first is loosing money, the second is barely in black.

Next phone change I’ll be buying a Galaxy S, or maybe an Xperia (way cheaper) and there is no differene because is the same OS and rules for eveyphone, so the difference are only a few.

Simply answer, How hard was to create a new UI in symbian using Qt?????

  • Goof

It is a clear switch to a closed / proprietary strategy, probably completetly out of context seeing the success of open initiatives like Android. Exit Symbian, Meego and Qt. I guess a lot of developers will stop quickly to target Nokia phones in these conditions. It also brings some light on the recent Symbian events.

I probably have in hand my last Nokia…

Smart move by Nokia, ill give them that, but if there is nothing done to WP7 (ie support for QT etc) i am out after 17 years of nokia!

  • Kenny

It seems that the rumours just came true. I am of mixed feelings when I read this, actually. Having been a loyal Nokia phone user all my life, my first thought would be what is going to happen to Symbian, Meego and Qt?? Is Nokia ditching them or living side by side? Too many ecosystem doesnt sound right either. Where is your focus?

I agree that the smartphone series is in dire need of a overhaul, maybe there is some lights at the end of the tunnel coming from WP7, I am happy that Nokia make a change at least. But I am not sure how is WP7 going to be better than Symbian or Meego.

Now, you have me on a fence instead. Just don’t screw up the support to my current devices!!

How can you like Symbian so much and be glad about this? If you liked Symbian, then you liked it for its features, not for the UI, otherwise you would’ve gone with iPhone or an Android phone by now. WP7 has 10% the functionality of Symbian.

I’m with Linux from 2000, with Qt from 2006 and with Nokia from 2008.
    Meego merged all these.

    What will happens with windows…?

May be Elop has been more clever than I gave him credit for, with the separation of “smart devices” and “mobile phones” it may be that nokia is putting it’s eggs in more than one basket. I’m quite happy with my N8 “mobile phone” and any future “mobile phones” that nokia launch rather than a nokia/microsoft “smart device”?

  • http://twitter.com/radixlinux bob roberts

This is the worst tech news of the year. The Nokia known for mobile technology and innovation is gone. The company is gutted and it’s own technology abandoned for something that lacks even basic multitasking and copy/paste ( coming soon in March ).

With this kind of leadership, many of the key technical staff will leave resulting in a shell company manipulated by Redmond. It is a sad sad day. The Nokia smartphone users are mostly die hard Nokia fans, they will be bitterly disappointed by this news. Meego was the future instead they picked Windows Phone 7 to lead Nokia to a terminal decline.

I don’t understand such strange strategy. Are he paid by Apple and Google?!

Let’s hope HP will release soon a Nokia N900 like Phone… it seems WebOS is the future. :-(

Oh c’mon! They will still implement MeeGo in atleast one device this year. It’s not that bad.

Why do Nokia need American market share? The US market is barely significant globally. Nokia outsell the next 3 phone manufacturers put together.

Why is that? developing for WM7 is a breeze and .NET is one of the few things whcih actially work :)

  • ExNokiaFan

Damn not WP7 it’s a disaster, why not improve the best platform that exists? The one that is even better than Android and trully open platform. You should work on meeGo. Now you walked into a Windows trash. After this I would say Elop is just a Trojan horse implanted by Microsoft to kill of competition and force their crap onto people.

  • Curtains

Worst thing that Nokia can do – Microsoft never has been, never is, never will be a significant player in mobile. This market requires speed, agility and crucially innovation – all attributes that MS has never led on, as much as they preach they have, they are followers – most of the time, too late. They’re success in gaming is in large part due to coming up against a behemoth that operates even more slowly than them (Sony). Google & Apple are no Sony’s, they are an entirely different class.

    A sad day for Nokia

To quote Vic Gundotra from Google- “Two turkeys do not make an Eagle”. Win 7 is a disaster- not even Nokia can stop it from being one.

Smart move, really. Symbian sux big time and is lagging behind everything – iPhone, WM7 or Android. Developers… developing for Symbian is a pain. Developing for WM7 is a pleasure + MS have everything.

Although I’ll buy a Nexus S. This is a good move by Nokia. WP7, although not “open-source” has definite standards and requirements for in’s mobile platform. This makes for a clean and professionally done code. Android, on the other hand, has none, evidence by the lack of standardization of button placements on each and every android device.

  • Johannes

Definitely not! We want a worked-through, smooth and open source MeeGo for the N900!

  • Sfu

I’ll say only one more thing. LOOK AT YOUR SHARE. Look at our stock. In the EU! Where is the home of Nokia. YOU sir! Are down by more then 10% and the markets have only been open for 40 minutes!

I’m not surprised that a lot of Nokia die-hards here are disappointed. They say love is blind? Well, I think loyalty is often times… umm… blinder. ;)

Me, I think this is great news. Nokia now has a chance to become relevant again. The key word here is “ecosystem”. There is simply no way Nokia could build a competitive one all on its own. With the best in hardware partnering with… umm… one of the best in software, Nokia’s WP7 will have a real chance to compete.

“Nokia’s extensive operator billing agreements will make it easier for consumers to purchase Nokia Windows Phone services in countries where credit-card use is low.”

This is going to be a real competitive advantage and will be one of the key features that’ll make the Nokia/Microsoft ecosystem a winner.

have you ever used WP7? I bet the answer is no.. try it and you will be pleasantly surprised. Developing a SW platform and ecosystem is very expensive and Nokia cannot continue to do it anymore.. They have 2-3x more R&D expense than any other company in this space with a declining market share.

WP7 sucks, unless Nokia make some major changes to it, it looks ugly, as a mobile phone sales consultant, i deal with every phone OS, and out of all of them WP7 is the worst, customers dont like the look or feel of it the blue tooth limitations really suck, as does the limitations on connecting WP7 phones directly to computers, i think this move will really hurt Nokia

Bad news for Nokia workers :-(

I wrote yesterday an analysis (in Spanish) of current Nokia situation and possible strategic movements in my blog, but I didn’t expect a strategic so bad.

    Some points:
-This is not a temporal change while MeeGo is ready: “Nokia will adopt Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy”
-Nokia plans to use Windows development tools instead of Qt. Qt is a good option to create applications to all Nokia smartphones.

I am surprised how many think this is a bad move by Nokia. Have you really been running around with shades, not realising how far behind symbian is, and how meego doesnt look competitive at all? Nokia make great hardware but their software and failed try at creating an ecosystem have put them on a steep decline.

With MS, and WP7 (which I think is refreshing and have a bright future), perhaps we finally might see that great nokia hardware running great software.

    This was really great news!

I agree that developing for .NET is a breeze. But the rest of your statement doesn’t make quite as much sense.

Clearly, given the number of apps, developing for the iPhone works just fine. Java is quite well established as a language – so development for Android is going on quite well despite your .NET statement.

Qt is the new development environment on Symbian – of which there are many millions of devices. You won’t find .NET available for it. And Qt on Meego devices was to have given developers access to the new high-end devices from Nokia. And Qt works – across a whole range of operating systems and hardware.

The chance of a bigger ecosystem than .NET on WP7 can provide.

I abandoned Nokia almost an year ago and went Android. Previously I went through a plethora of their smartphones, from the venerable 6630 to the N900. There was a time when I liked Nokia, a lot, and for a good reason. As many of my friends relied on my advice, they bought Nokia as well.
The one thing I was hoping for was for Nokia to come out with a high end Meego phone. That would have brought me back.
But after this announcement, I’m afraid Nokia lost all shreds of credibility in my eyes, and I doubt I will be coming back. I wish Nokia good luck with their new strategy, but here our ways part for good.

Is Windows Phone 7 still gonna be the limited OS as it now, like Apple? With no normal multitasking, no USB Storage Mode, etc? If yes, then a very bad decision. I can’t believe this is happening. You had to go join another company whose OS sucks and is a stain on smartphone OSes? My love affair with Nokia (which I maintained even after getting an Android device) is soon gonna be over this way. But let’s see what happens..

if windows phone 7 evolves a bit more then it’s definitely gonna be a competitive mobile os. BUT: it’s not exclusively for nokia! htc, samsung (?) among others use it as well! so there’ll be a price war. nokia will be just one of many…

Not Nokia fans, only want to see how long I can keep away from the two Apple and Google side.

For Nokia (and Microsoft), just… deliver
Would users have to wait for another year until the products are available in store, in America ? Maybe another year until it arrive in countries in Asia with incomplete online feature set compared to what’s available in America.

Hope this partnership works and Nokia can get up with the profit again. I’m sure other manufacturers are also waiting to see if WP7 is a viable alternative for popular smartphones lineup after Android. Either they succeed or failed, there will be decision makers watching to decide their own strategy.

I never cried over Symbian, even though I loved it, but adopting a limited OS like WP7 is a bad decision, unless Microsoft lets them make changes for the better, which I seriously doubt.. Can’t they learn from Google that being completely open source is the way to go now?

Stephen Elop is merely a Judas betraying his employer and the Finish people. He was inserted by Microsoft with the sole purpose of this action and the last few months noise was merely smoke and mirrors to prevent the inevitable dissent in the ranks at Nokia. Behind he scenes Elop will be getting a massive pat on the back by his chums at microsoft. Nokia has little to gain from this but Microsoft has masses. Microsoft made it’s money from the OS in MSDos Windows etc. not from the hardware. Nokia will now have to pay a premium to use WM7 in each device it sells which will reduce profit margin. R&D expenses will be considerably restricted and as the post mentions Symbian will be sidelined and franchised so will be sold off to be used by other manufacturers in the medium and lower end. Nokia will become MS’s lapdog and will merley be a handset manufacturer. Elop said they would only get one Meego device to market this year. How ironic that Apple managed 4 years ago to revolutionise the market with one device and Apple are the ones making the most profit per handset unit sold, how? By operating within their walled garden, not making multiple firmwares for multiple providers but maintaining control and therefore quaity levels over software and hardware. Nokia will not even be able to do this now as they will have to work with MS who have only ever been able to create bloat ware that is force fed via monopolistic tactics and through outright cheating. If you look logically at the figures Nokia was actually holding ground given the expanding market size and to suggest they could not weather the storm, well I feel sorry for the fins as after having Nokia reimagine itself many times since 1865 from welly boot maker to global dominant phone provider how much more face can be lost by admitting it cannot reinvent itself and needs Microsofts help . To say that Nokia did not have a device that could compete with iphone is just nonsense. The N8, as much as many criticise it, is a fantastic phone, albeit in need of some minor tweaks to the UI. If you compare Android, iOS and Symbian 3 they are all much the same, the difference is the apps. Ovi store has been growing at an incredible pace and was perfectly positioned to continue to become a viable ecosystem and Nokia had map services and infrastructure far in advance of any other company to be able to scale up and distribute a Jesus device once one had been finalised. That will now be a WM7 device with blood on it’s hands and given that WM7 figures show a reduction in market share can hardly be expected to compete with Android or iphone. A sad sad day and to be honest for Nokia a TOTAL FAIL!!!!!!!. As a long standing custoer having had over 10 handsets in the last 10-15 years, see ya be missing ya……

Are you sure about that? They killed maemo5 after two months they talked about the future of maemo6 in the Nokia World. I don’t trust anymore in Nokia.

  • Bondo

Damn, WP7 is a great platform. But I am surely sore to see MeeGo being put on the back burner. I doubt it will get any attention and if they actually do release a phone, it will be just one phone to say they did something so the Diehards will feel like Nokia cares about them. Gosh Maemo is so awesome. All Nokia had to do was wash polish it up and put it on more consumer centric hardware.

Totally ruined my day. Oh well live on I guess. I wonder how long my N900 will last.

  • Darth M

Quite. This is truly a disaster. How does this fit in with any of the things that made Nokia what it was? The best ever example of cutting the nose to spite the face. So, Symbian doesn’t work because of a poor UI? Move to the only OS on the block that is truly dreadful and has been so since the inception of mobile phones. Goodbye Nokia. Pity about that E7 I was planning to buy. Android/iOS, here I (reluctantly) come…

We all use Windows PCs. So why this bad faith in Windows Phone? Nokia needed an outstanding software manufacturer and distributor and Microsoft an outstanding hardware manufacturer. Together they have a chance to imitate the Apple model where both parts are in one house. Of course, Nokia must insist on exclusivity. Google is angry based on yesterday’s tweet by one of its executives.

Oh, and you better get used to how the hair on the back of your neck stands up whenever you see that bald guy’s sweaty face. You’re going to be seeing that face a lot and it won’t get any easier.

Condolences also to the many millions of loyal Nokia owners and fans, around the world, as well as the 43 Nokia owners in North America. It seems like that.. Also seems like MeeGo is the next Maemo which is sad imo. Nokia has lost many faithful consumers by this announcement…

I, for one, have been using Nokia phones since the mid 90′s and have never bought any other brand, but I guess now I’ll be moving on… Too bad! I really used to love Nokia! I loved their vision their OSs (despite their downfalls) and especially the OSs’ functionalities!! WP7 really Nokia??? What are you thinking, the OS doesn’t even have copy and paste yet! Not to mention no multitasking, limited hardware spec… etc.

Good news. Am so glad this smart move have taken place just at the right time. WP7 + Nokia will give a powerfull handset as here we have a quality device and a fast growing OS. Just keep in mind that WP7 had a much better start from scratch than iOS. Cross fingers and wait for the next updates and fixes. Yes and the software that was released 2 months ago will be exactly the same a year from now…

There are these things called “updates” that add new features and functionality. You might not be familier with that.

A WP7 update is coming in a few weeks and another is coming this summer.

Sorry but Nokia just could not compelte with it’s software. It’s not a software company and because of this it’s phones are looking seriously dated when compared to Android and iOS. This was completely obvious to everyone except the most die hard Nokia fans.

  • Sarge

Symbian is far behind, but at least I had acess to my SD Card directly when pluging it in to my PC…

WP7 is far more behind – It looks good but it has all these iOS lacks…

  • ralphie02

OMG, what the heck is that new CEO doing? he’s rendering Nokia’s effort this whole time useless!!! i bet more people bought symbian^3 than WP7, theres no reason for them to jump onto Microsoft’s platform since they wont get more users. also, switching wouldnt help them because no one wants WP7(very few) and for those who doesnt want symbian would obviously go for either android or ios, so why the hell would they buy this new WP7 phone from nokia? im thinking on a consumer’s point of view, and i have to say that Elop’s strategy doesnt seem very effective.
furthermore, nokia’s symbian platform is almost on par with other OS and on top of that, meego is almost here. they shouldve just stuck with those two, im also pretty sure that people wouldnt like how Nokia didnt “keep their word” by not sticking with Symbian and Meego

The only thing i can hope for now is that the stock prices would plunge so that elop gets kicked out.

hope nokia does well after this guys gets kicked out

Until and unless Nokia/Microsoft bring a good UI/multimedia phones and quick development platform, it’s very difficult for both the giant to give competition to BlackBerry/Android/iPhone, now these platforms are in to tablet world, but Nokia and Microsoft are still struggling with their Smartphone segment…. I personal using Nokia phone, but I feel very sad when I hear this announcement, I still hope these two will bring best out of their bucket.

Well I sure don’t want to use any Windows at++on my PC. Ever since I switched to Linux I saw what quality software is and what software that respects your freedom is. Microsoft’s software is neither of this. Not to mention Linux is free of cost and Microsoft software is damn expensive. and most people who use Widnows and other MS software either use it because they don’t know any better and are badly educated by out bad education system, or well they have to use this software because other circumstances force them to use it (like vendor locking)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=719455561 Fadi Farah

Is this a joke.. all Symbian needed was a few things tweaked:

    - They needed to get rid of specific variants (like blue N8 nam..etc) to push a unified update much faster…

    - New Qt UI and browser with Flash 10.1

    - More integrated social features (N900-like features, like built in Skype and plugin-able services)..

    - Fixes and updates here and there like portrait qwerty, better email client.. etc.

But instead they move to an Os that doen’t allow swappable MicroSD cards and no multi-tasking, no copy and paste and has less functionality than probably MeeGo (yes an unfinished OS)..

Same on you Nokia!! You leave your superior platforms, Symbian & MeeGo, you kill Qt, and you come to use the most handicap mobile OS out there, Windows Phone.
You betrayed the millions of your users, who use and love Symbian for its SUPERIORITY against any other mobile OS, just to please the common American user.
For me, TODAY YOU ARE DEAD Nokia. And I was one of your most loyal customers.

If I ever would have wanted a Windows phone befor I would have bought it. The Problem is that wp7 still sucks monkeyballs.

No acess to SD Cards is a 100% No go for me – I used the 32GB internal Memory (N97) to backup photos i made with an slr during holidays. This is a special reason, but its mine.

So this is the end for me – having only nokia phones for 13 years (!) my next one will be certainly from another brand.

    “We will disrupt them”

Yeah you will achieve popularity by choosing an operating system that everybody wants. Pure Genius ! The first thing that sprang my mind was “Oh no I certainly want my next phone to be a Nokia”. And the general sentiment was already clear when the first rumours appeared a month ago.

It is a shame that MeeGO and QT will suffer from such a bad decision.

    Hi Deyon,

Really? Did Symbian have all the above features after 1-1.5 years into development? Of course the N900 can do it, it’s using an OS that is about 15 years into its development.

Moreover, after about 100M dollars and 3 years of hardcore development. (FYI, Nokia’s R&D Budget is about 293% more than any of the competitors in the market atm) where is MeeGo? Oh yeah, hasn’t been released yet. WP7 is out and running.

    Okay okay okay.
Nokia needs help, nokia needs MS and MS needs nokia, that’s clear!!
Now there is Apple, Google and MS+Nokia

Typical consumer does not care about OS name and type at all, all he cares is that UI is usable and fast!

  • nollzy

WP7 is an ugly interface, that only allows you to customise the colour scheme. ANYTHING is better than WP7, it’s the look and feel of the phone that sells them, if the customers dont like it, they wont buy it. customers want photo backgrounds, bluetooth file transfer, and pretty much everyhting WP7 doesnt have

  • Aleksandrik

Would it be better if Nokia will go bankrupt because of Symbian and MeeGo and all Nokia employees loose their Job?

  • Sflanzio

This decision is a complete disaster. This is the WORST thing you could do, and this is the reason why I will NEVER get another nokia phone again, and I strongly reccomend anyone to do the same.

  • juan_sebastian_gomez

I just have to disagree with all this comments. WP7 is the only interesting proposal out there that incorporates a new concept of usability. Although its maturity compared with the direct competitors (Android, iPhone) is openly a disadvantage, it is a risk worth taking by Nokia. Now they’ll have a competitive ecosystem and very pleasant user experience.

  • Youssef Mrabet

What is ridiculous about this partnership is that none of the broad Nokia assets (apart Navteq) is leveraged or seems to have any planed and concrete future… Everything is sent to the “Recycle Bin”.

On the other hand, a lot of Microsoft assets are really being leveraged here (WM7, Bing…). Even Qt, was not mentioned, which means all the ongoing development on the Symbian platform are in uncertainty and all the developers will feel fooled and frustrated.

Why didn’t Nokia manage to negotiate a better deal? At least adopt Qt as the common development environment… To keep Symbian & Meego viable the time that is needed for WP7 on Nokia to take the right pace!

This is clearly a win-lose situation.

Usability? On WP7? Its horrible. Competitive ecosystem? The US is the only country that cares about it (even there extremely limited interest), outside the US(you know where most of Nokia users are) there has been little to no interest in WM7.

  • nollzy

i use WP7, Android, IOS and Symbian every day, as part of my phone i have to know how every phone works and what it can to, compare it to anything else from a users side of things (i dont care about from a programers stand point, it’s usability for your average user that sells phone) and it sucks big time, to many limitations. yes you can have a photo as you screen saver, but not as a proper background.

  • Vikram

After reading the brief summary of what they are working on, I can safely say Nokia is purchased by MS. Elope certainly betrayed Nokia employees and customer, developer. Where is ecosystem with WP7? I wish Board of Nokia kick him out for such a worthless deal. He is planted in nokia by MS.

Well, WP7 might or might not be a success. The point is that Nokia had a vision beyond being a pure HW-contractor for Mr. Balmer. Bulky fat Nokia will now be in a position where they compete with WP7-HW against slimmed and agile Chinese HW-vendors. Good strategy? Time will tell…

So basically, Nokia has sold out their loyal customer base, developer base & it’s out-of-america userbase, just to gain an increased share in the american market. I guess this is the result of having an american CEO, good-bye to nokia’s roots and established culture. did OPK really have to leave?

    > furthermore, nokia’s symbian platform is almost on par with other OS

No, it is not. It is a piece of crap. Both for users and for developers.

    > and on top of that, meego is almost here.

No, it is not. They are late as hell and there are little or no apps for MeeGo.

    > they shouldve just stuck with those two,

The should have concentrated on MeeGo and dump Symbian.

    > im also pretty sure that people wouldnt like how Nokia didnt “keep their word” by not sticking with Symbian and Meego

Developers won’t like it because it means that you will have to code in .NET with no native C++ development possible (comparing to iOS and Android). Disproportionally vast number of customers on the other hand won’t give a shit and buy whatever is marketed good enough.

Nokia throws in the towel, admitting incapability to develop software, regardless of Qt tools etc. This is so sad. Was the financial outlook for 2011 so unattractive, so desperate that Nokia was forced to give up? So unimpressive that the 15-year or so market leader by volumes and value with the new CEO from MS gives up.

Nokia will eventually be acquired by MS when market cap drops low enough and shareholders get frustrated enough.

Nokia seems to bring only HW, production and global reach to the alliance which is the direction of Dell and Lenovo. So sad.

I was planning to buy some new Nokia device this year but now you lost me after having been loyal Nokia user so far
