I didn't even look at the gallery yet, seriously what the hell did they do to my middle school hero?!

This is utterly, obscenely depressing. Like... worse than kitten murder depressing.

I think Nintendo had a hand in character design...it looks to me like Spyro is Bowser's nephew in the face...

I never played Spyro, but I like the art style. And the sculpts are decent on the toys. I've been waiting for game companies to start doing things like this for years. A shame people who lack vision are going to write this off as a "gimmick". It's a great start in the evolution of something much more interesting.

I don't think it's that great of an evolution if you have to keep buying toys in order to play the game. Since the game cost $ 70 by itself and only comes with 3 out of 30+ toys I would say this is a step back.

Do product lines ever become phenomenons through sheer force of marketing as opposed to capturing lightning in a bottle? Because that's what it seems Activision is trying to do here

@Dopple Boppler

Transformers back in the 80's probably counts, same with 80's GI Joe and He-Man

Now i can't think of anyone who's pulled that off this century (closest was Pokemon, but the core of the franchise is strong enough that it would have been successful enough without the cards and anime

@Mr Khan Yeah, I was thinking Pokemon at first too, but based on the fact that the franchise is still going strong (mostly) through the games I was hesitant to count it. I agree on Transformers and GI Joe though, just didn't think about them since they were a bit before my time.

Either way, I feel like this Spyro thing is more along the lines of Viva Pinata in that they plot the whole thing out based solely on marketing and hep and widit art design.

@grossgreg Wow - my first visit to the world of oblivion. I gotta say, I had no idea that the Spyro trilogy had such a following. I sort of skipped over the games in my PS1 days, so maybe I should dust off the old console and dig up some copies of the games. I have a lot of respect for a franchise that is good enough to gain such a passionate following.

The original Spyro came with the PS1 my parents gifted me for Christmas. It was a pretty cool platformer. Now it's being raped by Activision just like Crash Bandicoot. If only Insomniac and Naughty Dog could get them back...

@Finito Crash hadn't have another game ever since those 2 next gen games that came out. This would be like the second time that Spyro got rebooted (Spyro the Dragon and then Spyro Legends).

At first glance Spyro is pretty ack worthy. There's a chance it could grow on me. I'd be pissed if the titular dragon would be the rarest figure.

By the way, does anyone else think it's ridiculous that Bobby Kotick founded an entire studio just to make himself playthings?

@Xoonaka Toys For Bob has been around since the late 90s and is, in fact, the studio that created the original Star Control. They also did the Pandemonium games for PlayStation, then moved into family fare like the Madagascar licensed games. The name, believe it or not, is a coincidence. Check toysforbob.com for more info.

Um, for everyone who played Spyro as a kid and sees this as nostalgic heresy...has it occurred to you that this was not made for you? You were a kid when you enjoyed Spyro. Now the next generation of kids get their version of Spyro. LET GO.

Every game put out is not made for you, even if you recognize its core character.

@OneOfSwords

And what of icons like Mario? His old games were loved by us back then, and his newer titles are just as awesome to kids and adults alike despite him being the same lovable plumber he was back in the day. Why? because he didn't fall prey to companies obsessed with the idea of making characters "hip" and "cool" with extreme redesigns and crappy gimmicks in an attempt to cater to a new generation... which in Spyro's case has resulted in terrible games with subpar ratings in comparison to the original three developed by Insomniac. The "next generation" of kids deserve to enjoy a Spyro game, but more than anything they deserve to enjoy a *good* Spyro game... like we did.

@LOMDR @skyblaze C'mon. You haven't played it, you're not the target market, and you don't know if it's fun for kids yet. I think you're judging all this on very little info, way too early, and at the end of the day, my point stands: It's not being built for you. if you find it fun, great, but the target here is obviously not you. Let the kids decide if it's fun or not.

You're in the camp of the original three Insomniac games; I hear people talk about the later, slightly darker Legend of Spyro series as if those are the best in the series. I think it's very much what you grew up playing, and what resonated with you at the time. So if the next generation likes this Spyro...what's the problem? Your original games and your memories remain. Access them anytime.

@OneOfSwords

Anyone who likes the rebooted Sypro games is a child who never played them. Same issue with Star Wars. At least the prequel trilogy was decent. I can't say the same for anything Spyro related past the Insomniac games. Quality is quality. Doesn't matter what the market is. There's a reason certain kids toys and games are timeless. Your point is moot.

@kgoo867 Not if this game turns out to be quality. Let it be what it's going to be before you judge it. If it's bad, then you've got a point. Right now, you've got some screens and an announcement. Slow down, cowboy.

@OneOfSwords Well, you guys "let kids decide if it's fun or not" with the last Tony Hawk game, and look how that turned out.

I know you feel the need the defend the company you work for, but at the end of the day, this just seems like a repeat of that scenario.

Love ya Dan, but that's just the way I'm seeing this.

Quality is quality, regardless of age. Hey, maybe it will be GotY and then you can laugh in our faces. but I doubt that will happen.

@OneOfSwords

The thing with Mario is that it didnt change the things it did right, other games did. Even Metal Gear Solid has lasted to this day. The moment Crash and Spyro both got dropped by thier original developers they were no longer that fun, yeah the characters were there, but there was something missing.

Theres a reason why Jak & Daxter games, Sly games and Rachet & Clank games, despite being repetitive in some cases are still regarded as a heck load of fun, it because the charm, the humour, the colour, the interesting worlds, the voices etc etc have all remained the same. I'm a grown adult and still found the last Rachet game quite humourous, it's plain to see I haven't grown out of the series I loved when younger and funny enough, kids enjoy it too, so it's obviously doing something right.

I can download the crash games made by Naughty Dog any day and the Spyro games made by Insomniac any day because I am enjoying myself despite how how they are. The new games haven't had the same charm unfortunatly.

Thats not to say this game will fall into the same trap, but I'm not holding my breath, those pictures alone don't look like the lovable Spyro that used to be, in fact, it looks like a monstrosity, I don't know how any child could learn to love 'that' :/

Considering that Vivendi had taken the time to create the Legend of Spyro series, a trilogy that was liked by a lot of people and actually ended up being liked by the fans after a rather bad slump, it seems like it would have made sense to go from that. The door was wide open for some kick ass storytelling and gaming. But, no, a change over to Activision's hands and we have this...

I think maybe I'll get on my PS3 and play the original games. Then I can recall what games looked like before they felt the need to turn everything into gimmicky garbage.

Also, while the idea sounds interesting, it doesn't seem like Spyro the character actually adds anything to the game. He doesn't look anything like he used to. Why not just drop Spyro and call this a new IP?
