A former Gitmo detainee convicted of terrorism-related charges was freed from an Italian jail on Monday. Adel Ben Mabrouk, a Tunisian who lived in Italy for much of the 1990s, was a member of a known al Qaeda network in Italy prior to his detention at Guantanamo. Mabrouk was captured after fleeing the Tora Bora Mountains in late 2001.

A teenage suicide bomber in a school uniform evaded detection at several checkpoints at a military base in Khyber Pakhtunkwha province and detonated his vest in the midst of a crowd of army recruits.

Anwar ul Haq Mujahid, who had formerly been detained and released by Pakistan, spoke at Awar Gul's funeral in Nangarhar province. An official Taliban statement was read, praising Gul as "the renowned commander." In addition, Afghan President Hamid Karzai called for the release of a top Taliban official from Guantanamo.

The Afghan High Peace Council has requested the release of Khairullah Khairkhwa, a top Taliban official, from Guantanamo. Khairkhwa, who was detained in early 2002, was the governor of Herat province during the Taliban's reign. He was also allegedly involved in drug trafficking, had ties to senior al Qaeda leaders, and admittedly set up security for meetings between the Taliban and Iran.

Thirwat Salah Shehata, a top al Qaeda operative who has long served Ayman al Zawahiri, has released a statement in support of the Egyptian protesters. According to a Saudi publication, Shehata issued the statement from Iran.

Awal Gul, a former Taliban commander, died of an apparent heart attack at Guantanamo on Tuesday. According to the US military's declassified files, Osama bin Laden allegedly gave Gul $100,000 to help al Qaeda members escape Afghanistan after 9/11.

Soldiers killed five Abu Sayyaf fighters and overran their mountain camp in the town of Sumisip in Basilan. Two soldiers were also killed during a three-hour-long firefight with more than 30 Abu Sayyaf fighters.
Eighteen Thai soldiers were wounded in an IED attack in the southern province of Yala. Muslim insurgents detonated a large bomb planted in a pickup truck as a patrol passed by. Several homes and shops were destroyed.
Afghan troops detained eight Taliban fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand, and Khost. The US suspended a trilateral meeting on regional security in Washington with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The military suspended the constitution, dissolved the parliament, and imposed military rule. The military will run the country for the next six months, or until elections are held.
February 12, 2011:
A suicide bomber wounded three soldiers in Malakand. A court issued a warrant for former President Pervez Musharraf for involvement in the murder of Benazir Bhutto. The US demanded full immunity for a consular official detained after killing two people in Lahore.
A Taliban suicide assault team killed 16 police officers and three civilians in an attack on a police headquarters in Kandahar. The Taliban kidnapped two policemen in Kunar. Security forces killed two Taliban fighters in Badghis, and detained 20 Taliban fighters in Kandahar and five more in Farah. Helmand's governor accused Iran and Pakistan of backing the Taliban.
A senior Shabaab official said that primary and secondary schools in lower Shabelle province must teach "jihad." Police displayed two captive Shabaab fighters to the media.
A suicide bomber killed 31 Iraqis at a bombing that targeted Shia pilgrims at a cafe just north of Samarra. Police arrested 25 wanted men in Diyala.
