Crysis 2 PC & Multiplayer Master Key Leaks 39 Days Prior To Release

Well, you certainly don't see this kind of situation often anymore. Usually when a game leaks into the hands of grubby pirates it is via the release of Xbox 360 or PS3 rips prior to launch. In a strange turn of events however a nearly feature complete PC DirectX 9 internal build of Crysis 2 PC busted out onto the net last night. Not only that, but according to reports the complete Crysis 2 multiplayer master key is now out in the wild as well.

A user on the Facepunch forums was among the first to really draw attention to the leak. After poking around the net however it seems that there was discussion at a French hardware site prior, which posted what looks to be the very first screenshots from the developer build.

With the multiplayer master key out there no one can be sure what exactly this leak is going to mean for the legit Crysis 2 multiplayer community, or the hard working developers at Crytek. Assuming Crytek changes the key and sets up measures to make sure that pirates can't interfere with legit players, there may very well be split communities of actual owners and pirates running a patched up leaked build.

Screenshots, and of course Youtube videos have even begun to hit the net, so watch out for spoilers. The good news is according to some that have accessed the leak it is indeed limited to DirectX9 only, and it reportedly crashes often as well. So with that said, the pirates aren't exactly getting the intended experience, and it's obvious that it's not representative of the final product.

Update: Crytek has issued an official response to the leak:

Crytek has been alerted that an early, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites. Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and playing the final, polished game on March 22.

Crysis 2 is still in development, and the team is hard at work on it and Crysis 2 promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion.

Piracy continues to damage the PC development community.

I just wish the PC wasn't the only platform typically acknowledged for having piracy problems, but despite that I'm still encouraged to wait for my retail copy.

Piracy pfft, who cares. People will need to buy a key if they wish to play online which is no doubt a big component. But I doubt this will hurt their bottom line ($). The only real way a Dev can screw up is by making a shit game but I think Crysis2 is safe.

Well, the game is certainly living up to its name!

"Piracy continues to damage the PC development community."

What does it have to do with the codes leaking from messy and unsecured company.

I understand Crytek's anger but do not blame the pirates for all your problems - it is just stupid.

I think that sentence about piracy continuing to hurt PC development was said because of negative emotions more than anything else. Developers shouldn't keep poking PC users with a stick, they tend to get very jaded.

Piracy is a problem on all platforms, it would have been better to say "Piracy continues to hurt the game development community."

First, I'm sorry to hear about the leak and no, Crytek doesn't deserve this.

However, the comment that mentions the PC community, seems uncalled for.
An internal leak, as I see it, can only be blamed on security issues within the dev/publisher chain and they should search within their own ranks.
They can blame piracy when the game is released and retail copies are being spread. But only then.

I hope they tighten up the secuitry so it doesn't happen in the future...and hope others in the bussiness are watching this too, so we don't get these situations.

Guys, please no more talk about downloading the leak. Seriously, I don't care if you have good or bad feedback on it, we're going to have to start deleting comments if it doesn't stop.

Again, you're welcome to discuss the leak as an event that happened, you can even speculate on the effects it may have. We do not want people talking about taking part in the leak though. I'm not trying to be a prick about it, but I've said this more than once now.

Show some respect for Crytek whether you like them or not, they're dealing with a difficult situation. The last thing you should be doing is downloading the leak.

Well, I personally pre-ordered the game a while back before this "leak" business and I downloaded the
leak last night to give it a go, kind of like an extended demo. Before I go into any details about the game
I'd like to give my two cents about the "piracy" situation : First off, the leak is probably just a stunt to
attract attention to their game. People will play it, single and multiplayer and that will tempt them to buy
it, either because of the DX 11 visuals, or because they're liking the "CoD with super suits" multiplayer.
I had a friend come over to check it out, and he fully intents to buy the game now that he saw it. I also
agree with the comments about console piracy : Games are leaked weeks before release (see Halo),
you have modified X-Boxes that can be JTAGed and pretty much download anything on them (DLCs,
arcade games etc.) and you have PS3s that can't even tell if you're playing a backup or an original. So
I don't agree that piracy in PC is that big of a deal compared to the home consoles.

Now to the game : I will not be spoiling any story elements, I'll just be giving my thoughts as a mini
preview (I fiddled with the leak for about 3 hours, -irrelevant- then resumed Dead Space 2 -irrelevant-).
First of all : WOW. I've been playing games since the Commodore C64, and my eyes have seen plenty
of impressive leaps in graphics technology, but I had to "wow!" at the graphics of this game. Keeping in
mind that it is NOT the finished product and that I was running it in 32-bit mode with DX9 graphics, and
even though some animations are problematic, this has BY FAR the best graphics to date. The photo
realism is INSANE and makes me wonder what the next step will be. Another note of interest is the
music. I usually don't pay much attention to music in games, mostly because there isn't usually
anything worthy to pay attention to, but I was pleasently surprised with the game's music. I can't
describe it, you need to experience it for yourselves but just a note to all who will play this game when
it comes out, keep an ear out for the music. The shooting part isn't bad, although I wished they'd give
some of the weapon mods (like the red dot sight) from the beggining, like they did in the original, so it
would be a little more "tight". My only real grudge with the combat is that the muzzle flash from the gun
is so intense it kind of blocks your vision when shooting (!), and with the enemies usually ducking for
cover you can't tell if you've scored a headshot or if the guy just dodged the hail of bullets you just sent
him. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not to my taste. I suppose I'll be fine once I get the red dot and silencer. I like how you don't have 5 modes anymore for the suit. It may sound "dumbed-down", but it's actually a step forward in my opinion. It makes the action much more "snappy" and fast. Basically you can use the Q key to switch to the slower, but more defensive, armor mode and the E key to switch to my personal favorite, the cloaking mode. Speed/Strength from the original game have been intergrated into the "neutral" function of the suit : when you run, if you have energy, it'll sprint as if you were in 1's sprint mode, and also if you have the energy requirement (about 30-40 energy) you can hold space for a "power" jump. The melee is an instant kill although that may be part of the strength deal, I haven't tried punching someone when I'm low on energy. I think it's handy the way you can change between the 3 "forms" of the suit (neutral, armor, stealth) so fast, and I'm sure it's gonna be even more useful in the multiplayer part of the game. I also liked how the game offers you multiple choices on how to overcome an area and move ahead : the visor (binoculars with benefits) will pinpoint you where there is an ammo/grenade cache, where there is an area you can use to sneak by, a ledge you can use to progress from above, or simply point you to cover so you are not in a disadvantage should you wish to proceed guns blazing. A nice detail is also the extras that are available in the main menu, with story flashbacks and various other gimmicks to keep players interested a bit more in the game.

Of course, the game is still unfinished and bugs are a-plenty (and I don't mean just the small aliens crawling around the subways), so I can't really say anything bad right now since in all probability it'll be fixed by the final release a month from now, but from what I've played so far, I am satisfied with my decision to pre-order it. I truly believe it's a quality shooter, up from a beautiful rig-melting shooting gallery that was it's predecesor. For those who do not want their experience spoiled, the demo should be releasing soon for the PC and I'd advise everyone, even those who are not fan of the genre,
to check it out. Between this leak and the multiplayer demo I checked out on my 360, I can solidly recommend this game as a quality shooter.

now let the TL;DR comments flood in, and let me apologize for the wall of text :)

It's one thing to write an article about pirating..it's another when the posters all blatantly admit they're pirating. If it weren't for you assholes stealing things we wouldn't have those annoying car alarms causing noise pollution. We all suffer because of you...

holyjohnson225 .
If you think that there'll be some improvement I'm sorry for you. In a month time maximum they'll be able to fix it's only bugs, obviously not all of them cause not enough time left befor they send master disc to manufacturers . This Illegal "beta" demo call it what you want, will remain the same at the release day , sad but truth I'm not living in a fairytale world like you. I think they killed their own child and they deserve to fail, I'll never gonna buy any crytek's games after this fail, they died to me .

You are wrong my friend, builds are usually in a buggy / crash prone state up until the last couple of months in almost all cases. Do you have any idea how many bugs get squashed during alpha, beta, and submit/RC phases? Do you even know anything about game development?

Bug counts can be in the thousands, they get identified by QA and categorized usually as A class, B Class, C Class, etc. The core team that remains at that point is almost entirely focused on getting the bugs fixed, and polishing up the game where needed. The team is not going to be focused on adding new assets, you need to understand that. The devs literally take the remaining resources they have and dump it all into cleaning up the game for ship.

Considering that Crysis 2 is coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3 that means that the game has to pass two different external certification processes. This is on top of any QA at EA or Crytek. That means that the PC build should benefit, because Microsoft and Sony are going to be very picky about what they'll allow to pass. If a game doesn't pass cert on either console platform then it doesn't ship on that platform. PC games do not have to go through a cert process beyond the publisher's QA department (and usually the developer's QA as well).

If you're going to make such harsh claims at least do your research on how game development works first. As it stands right now, while I appreciate your input, you're spreading misinformed lies. I ask that you please not discuss pirating Crysis 2 beyond what you have already. Leave it be, we do not support piracy here period and you're crossing the line by talking about taking part in it.

@Pinkarno - I've only seen one or two in this thread talk like they did. Don't worry though, I'm ready to lay the smack down if it continues. Discussing the leak = ok. Discussing taking part in the leak and giving hands-on opinions on it = not ok.

yeah played it and it's pretty bad that I cancelled my preorder. Glad that someone leaked it so I didn't waste my money. they should do this more often to save us gamers money since most games nowadays don't have a demo :)

I feel bad for Crytek, but I wouldn’t worry too much…
While there is no doubt that millions of dollars of product is lost to piracy, only a fraction of that piracy results in lost sales. In other words, most pirates wouldn’t buy it anyway.
BTW, I wonder how much EA writes off their taxes due to perceived lost revenue due to piracy?
