The cover model for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue 2011 was revealed on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Her name is Irina Shayk, 25, and she hails from Russia. It’s her fifth appearance in the annual issue, but her first on the cover (She’s the first Russian cover model for the magazine). Frankly, Speakeasy doesn’t care all that much–we get our sports news from SportsCenter, not Sports Illustrated–but the choice does raise an interesting issue–why didn’t Brooklyn Decker nab the cover? Yeah, everyone knows Decker was on the cover last year, but her career is even hotter now. She’s featured in the No. 1 movie “Just Go With It” with Adam Sandler, and she’s got more buzz than most other swimsuit models these days. Sure, she can’t act, but still. Kinda weird that they picked someone who is largely unknown outside of swimsuits and Emangelynsk City, Russia. Maybe she can act. (BTW, Decker is featured inside the SI issue.)
Anyhow, here’s a clip from Letterman’s show.

What do you think? Did Sports Illustrated pick the right model? Are you tired of the swimsuit issue already? Does Decker have a future on the big screen? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

I agree with GreggM. Before the wall fell, I had no idea there were SOOO many beautiful girls from Eastern Europe. Thanks again, President Reagan! The free world owes you for yet another reason!
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think she is beautiful. She is the ideal woman. I only wish I could see more of her. What a specimen!
“By the way she is Cristiano Ronaldo’s girlfriend.
Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best and is the most well known soccer player”
Which is why no one in America knows him, or cares.

Maybe if she went on a show people watch, and not some old misogynists stale venue, they would get better publicity.
