Tampa: After dark, alive with restaurants, clubs
Blossoming Big T is about to become Florida's next Big Downtown. And the same forces that have driven the comeback of cities elsewhere in Florida drive Tampa's renewal. Tampa has 6,000 residential units, newly rising or ready to rise surrounding the downtown office district. And nearby Ybor City is once again coming alive.
You can still watch cigars being rolled in this district, which has been revived as a human-scaled, walking-friendly place for food and pop culture. And it's a place with Hispanic style in food, dress and language, and the legacy of shotgun shacks and social clubs of a barrio that once looked after its working class generously. But Ybor comes more alive after sunset. It's one of Florida's great happening places, with its late-night clubs and first-rate restaurants, from Bernini and Laughing Cat to the original Columbia, celebrating the start of its second century. -- Herb Hiller |
