Tired of girly perfumes? Check out what guys are wearing

Perfume Everyone seems up for a change at the start of a new year. As I was cleaning out my closets a week or so ago (one New Year's resolution checked off the list), my eye turned to the array of perfume bottles on a shelf. The Chanel No. 5 -- classic but a little old-fashioned; the lemon-ginger body spray -- too teenybopper.

It occurred to me I really like the way my husband smells. His Tiffany for Men is subtle and citrusy with a rich woody essence of sandalwood. Perfect! One more thing for the two of us to share!

Women who are looking for something a little crisper, a little less flowery, should try shopping the men's toiletries aisle. There are some terrific finds there, and writer Janet Kinosian gives us the rundown on some favorite his-for-her scents in a piece she did for the Los Angeles Times' Image section: "10 men's fragrances that women love — for themselves."

Creed's Silver Mountain Water, Guerlain Vertiver, Eau d'Hadrien are among the temptations. I'll have to try them all. But until then -- dear, could you pass me the Tiffany?

Your morning fashion and beauty report: From reality star to business mogul, Snooki is branching out, a la the Kardashians

Asnooki
"Jersey Shore's" Snooki is branching out. The reality-show instant celeb has plans for a merchandise empire that includes makeup, clothing, personal care products, sunglasses and lingerie. What can I say? Make it stop! [BellaSugar]

In August, Gucci launched Gucci Guilty fragrance for women. Now men can get guilty too as the design house's licensee, Proctor & Gamble, prepares to roll out Gucci Guilty Pour Homme. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Meanwhile, Cartier's new women's scent, Cartier de Lune, is set to hit Saks' Fifth Avenue counters this month [WWD] while Rihanna's first fragrance, Reb'l Fleur, will soon be introduced by Parlux Fragrances Inc. The name? It's the singer's nickname from her grandmother. [People]

The iconic beehive hairdo didn't exist until 50 years ago or so, when stylist Margaret Vinci Heldt created it. Heldt, now 92, is getting her due with a new scholarship named in her honor by Cosmetologists Chicago. [TribLocal]

CoverGirl gathered cover girls past and present for a 50th-anniversary bash at L.A.'s Boa steakhouse. Famous faces Taylor Swift, Ellen DeGeneres, Drew Barrymore, Cheryl Tiegs, and Queen Latifah were among 'em. [WWD]

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Counting down to Christmas, you can 'celebrate' Festivus

Ashop
-- Stuck in traffic? Standing in line at the mall as the minutes tick-tick-tick toward Christmas and you still haven't found the perfect sweater for your Aunt or "It" toy for the nephew? Take solace: Dec. 23 is the day you can celebrate Festivus, the holiday invented by "Seinfeld's" Frank Costanza (father of George), as a day to air grievances. So complain all you want. Though in my opinion if you just buy yourself a little something fabulous while you're captive at the mall, you'll feel much, much better. [Boston Globe]

-- With all the hoopla over the engagement of Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton, we almost forgot there is another important royal wedding coming up next year. And it too promises to be a doozy. Monaco's Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock will flout tradition when they marry July 2 in an outdoor religious ceremony, the palace announced Wednesday. The wedding will take place in the Palace's Court of Honor. The palace gates will be left open and giant TV monitors set up to allow an anticipated 4,000 people to view the event in the Place du Palais. Our question (as always): What will the soon-to-be princess wear? No answer yet. [People]

-- Ever wonder how stylish fashion designers spend the holidays? Women's Wear Daily asked a bunch of them, and the answers do make visions of sugarplums (or luxurious gifts, feasts and travel) dance through your head. [WWD]

-- There are likely to be a lot of happy dads, boyfriends, husbands and sons around the Christmas tree this year. Or at least they will be getting their due. Reports are that menswear has been the star performer for many retailers this holiday season. [WWD] (subscription required)

-- Looking for a retro-chic gift for a beau or best friend? Halston has two new Oriental fragrances: Halston Woman Amber and Halston Man Amber. The female version blends ambers, woods and resins with wild tuberose. The male fragrance is a more contemporary woody Oriental. They come in the familiar Elsa Peretti-designed bottles, updated from their 1975 incarnation and dipped in gold. A great blend of nostalgia and contemporary sensibilities. Halston Woman Amber 1.7-ounce eau de toilette spray retails for $90 and Halston Man Amber 2.5-ounce eau de toilette spray retails for $65. They are available at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Harrods. [StyleList]

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Looks are both beautiful and funky at Latin Grammys. Jason Wu turns his hand to wedding dresses.

Apaloma
Camila, a soft Mexican rock band, won for song and record of the year for "Mientes" on Thursday at the Latin Grammys -- which took place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas -- as our colleague Reed Johnson reports. But Alex Cuba may have been among the most interestingly dressed (which, or course, is our main concern here at All the Rage). Cuba, who won for best artist, sported silver high-top sneakers, a purple leather tie, white blazer and jeans and a glittery belt buckle. It was the tie that really turned our heads. There were plenty of beautiful looks on the red carpet, such as singer Paloma Michelle, above, in a sweep of scarlet. [LAT]

Reed Krakoff's first fragrance will be in keeping with his modernist style and the upscale position of the brand. We're talking hand-crafted Murano glass bottles and rare French hyacinth absolute in the scent.  [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Meanwhile, to mark the 150th anniversary of it founder's birth, Lalique is pulling out all the stops with its new Fleur di Cristal scent. It contains top notes of bergamot from Calabria, pink peppercorn and jasmine sambac. [WWD]  (Subscription required.)

You like chocolate? You like fashion? We give you the Chocolate Fashion Show, held in New York this week, where the clothes on the runway were made out of...chocolate! [StyleList]

Actress Eva Mendes is ahead of the crowd. She was recently spotted wearing one of Prada's carnival-themed dresses from the atelier's collection for next spring -- possibly the first time the dress has been seen off the runway. And she looked adorable. [Telegraph]

Designer Jason Wu is coming out with a capsule collection of five wedding dresses for Net-a-Porter. [StyleSectionLA]

That's all for now, but come back for more! Later Friday on All the Rage we'll tell you about weekend shopping, the latest on the controversial Brazilian Blowout hair straightening treatment and take you to a get-together of Hello, Kitty fanatics!

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Start planning for Black Friday now. Plus new fragrances coming from Justin Bieber, Jimmy Choo.

Ashop
It's three weeks till Black Friday, the traditional day-after-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy. Retailers are preparing to launch their ad campaigns, with everyone trying to one-up the others with deals, merchandise selection and crazy store opening times. Last year you could hardly digest the T-Day turkey before you had to push away from the table, grab the car keys and head for the mall for the midnight openings. But you can plan early with websites such as BlackFridayGottaDeal.com that are already offering coupons and sneek peaks at the deals. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Madonna made a surprise appearance Wednesday night at the Fashion Delivers gala at the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC. Jaws dropped when the singer (and now celeb designer) stepped from behind a velvet curtain to give Neil Cole, chairman of the Iconix Brand Group, an award for his charitable endeavors. [WWD]

Pop-ups seem to be a trend that keeps on truckin'. It's one thing when Sephora opens at JCPenny, but L'Oreal Paris at Bed, Bath and Beyond? Excuse me? I really don't get it, but they are testing the concept in New York. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

It's tough being beautiful (so beautiful women say) and Jessica Alba tells Elle magazine she doesn't like being the center of attention. It's a little hard to compute, though, since there she is looking fetching on the December cover in a mega-attention-getting low-cut, off-the-shoulder top and tight short-shorts. Note: Tight, revealing summery clothes on a December issue! [People]

It's tough being beautiful, part 2: It was bound to happen sooner or later. Kim Kardashian broke her toe in a mishap wearing a Christian Louboutin heel. Were the shoes at fault? Not according to Louboutin. "Maybe it's just a clumsy family," he reportedly says. [Racked]

Everyone seems to be doing everything these days, so no surprise that shoe company Jimmy Choo has a new fragrance, which is scheduled to hit stores in January. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

And along those lines, singer Justin Bieber, who two weeks ago announced he's in a deal for unisex scented dogtags and wristbands with Etoile Nation Beauty,  now has a deal for a women's fragrance in partnership with Give Back Brands Inc., a new company intent on using celebrity-branded products to raise money for charity. [WWD]

But when it comes to fragrance, the one I'd bet on is Portrait of a Lady, no celebs involved. It's a soon-to-debut scent from French master perfumer Frederic Malle, made in collaboration with "nose" Dominique Ropion for the Malle perfumery's 10th anniversary. It's described as a lush, heady mix including Turkish rose, raspberries, cassis, cinamon, patchouli and musk. It will sell for $280 a bottle starting next month at Barneys New York.  [T Magazine]

We knew Kate Moss and Philp Green's TopShop collaborations couldn't really be over, despite the debut of what was called her "last official" collection for the British retailer. Vogue UK reports that the two are already planning their next joint endeavor, possibly a line of lingerie.

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Katy Perry and Russell Brand DO wear clothes for their wedding. And Justin Bieber gets into the scent biz.

Bieber

Katy Perry and Russell Brand married in  India on Saturday. Although they had joked about making it a nudist ceremony, Perry reportedly wore a dove gray haute couture dress by Elie Saab. [US Weekly]  Reports are that the wedding required two elephants -- for whom a red carpet was rolled out. At pre-wedding festivities on Friday night, Perry reportedly wore a simple red sari. [People]

First nail polish (a few shades for OPI), now fragrance. Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber is launching a unisex scent, My World, in partnership with new company Etoile Nation Beauty. The twist? Instead of bottles of perfume, the line will consist of wristbands and dog tags infused with scent. They are slated to go on sale at Wal-Mart the day after Thanksgiving. [WWD]

Anna Della Russo, the Vogue Japan fashion director whose wardrobe is so extensive it requires its own apartment, has a new fragrance coming out in December. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Pink bridal gowns are making a soft statement this fall. [WWD]

Kiehl's has teamed up with artist Jeff Koons on a limited-edition Holiday Creme de Corps Collection. The bottles feature Tulips, a work by Koons, and 100% of the net profits up to $200,000 will go to benefit the Koons Family Foundation, which is an initiative of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. Your morning fashion and beauty report: Kate Walsh, Katy Perry and Beyonce make fragrance news. And the metrosexual gives way to the machosexual.

Katewalsh
When is a derriere not a derriere? When a jeans company describes it in ads with a term that can't be used in a family newspaper (or website)....and with no bleeping! That's the latest trend in denim advertising, and companies such as Levi's say they are just using the same language their customer would use. Just one more sign of Armageddon. [Wall Street Journal] (Subscription required.)

L'Oreal Paris is launching an anti-aging line called Youth Code that is said to include the first mass market skin care products that stimulate genes to reverse the effects of aging. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Celebrity deal of the day: Kate Walsh, aka Dr. Addison Montgomery on "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice," is entering the beauty business, with a new fragrance called Boyfriend. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Speaking of celebrity fragrances, Katy Perry is tricked out in a pink and blue Latex catsuit, playing with a giant ball of pink yarn, in her ads for her new fragrance, Purr. [WWD]  And Beyonce is following up her Heat fragrance with Heat Rush, a daytime scent to be released in February. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

We love food; we love fashion. And Barneys New York is bringing both together in holiday window displays that will be inspired by famous chefs, including Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, Cat Cora, Ina Garten, Anne Burrell and Paula Deen. [StyleList]

Actress/singer Selena Gomez is auctioning off the Catherine Dean gown she wore in her "A Day without Rain" video to benefit UNICEF. [People] The dress is available through Nov. 10 on the online auction site Charitybuzz.

Can it be true? Reports from across the pond are that the recession is forcing men to abandon being metrosexuals to become moisturizer-less, hair-gel-eschewing machosexuals. [StyleList]

Eau de 90210: Beverly Hills launches its fragrance Tuesday

Rage_shield Three fragrances bearing the familiar Beverly Hills brown shield logo will be unveiled Tuesday, reports our colleague Catherine Saillant.

According to the story, Dan Walsh, executive director of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, declined to describe the scents  -- which in addition to the licensed use of the city's name and shield, will bear names including "Iconic" and "Must Have" (and a $120 price tag) -- in hopes of not spoiling the big reveal Tuesday at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills.

As soon as we can wave some bottles under our collective noses, we'll offer up our take on the trio of perfumes that will hit retail in January and are expected to generate an estimated $100,000 a year in royalties for the city's marketing department.

Barneys New York fetes Frederic Malle with a stylish dinner in Hollywood

_N1G6667

“I’m so not a candle person!” said Frederic Malle during a dinner thrown in honor of his new candle collection Thursday night. For Malle, creator of Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle, the line of fragrances that has garnered a global cult following, candles had traditionally been too pungent and something designed to cover up a bad smell -- until now. His range of candles is meant to mimic actual scents from nature such as a bouquet of flowers (Un Gardenia la Nuit) or re-create a place (Russian Nights). There are nine candles, which are encased in red hand-blown glass jars, with scents that travel from the familiar to the exotic. Saint des Saints was inspired by the inside of an Indian temple and Coffee Society is_N1G6308 reminiscent of the smell that lingered in Malle’s childhood home in Paris after his parents threw a dinner party.

The dinner party thrown in his honor was held at Villa Vallombrosa, the Hollywood Hills home of photographer Tim Street-Porter and interior designer Annie Kelly. Guests such as Anjelica Huston, Paul Fortune, Peggy Moffitt, Lisa Eisner and Gina Gershon filed into the candle-lit dining room of the fabled estate (legendary costume designer Adrian and photographer Baron Adolph de Meyer once called the Villa home), which was so elegant it felt like you could have been in the Parisian home which inspired Malle’s candle.

Barneys New York creative director Simon Doonan was in town briefly to attend the dinner while his husband Jonathan Adler was down at Fashion Island for the opening of his new boutique. Sitting next to _N1G6348 Doonan was Gelila Puck, dressed in a stunning peach colored V-front dress that drew a heavy contrast to her black Louise Brooks-style hair cut. “It’s 1970s Jimmy Galanos” said Puck of her dress. She admitted to being a huge fan of Malle and wears three of his scents.

And while the evening drew a few cultural icons and some of the city’s most stylish individuals, Doonan managed to mix it up and inject a little humor into the night, rattling off people’s “Jersey Shore” names  generated from a Jersey Shore nickname website. (Doonan loves the MTV show and pulled an Ed Hardy iPhone cover out from his Goyard bag to prove it.)  “Anjelica is ‘The Incident’ and Gina is Pookie,” said Doonan to the crowd’s extreme delight. And then it was right back to business, “Go mob Freddie at Barneys tomorrow!” Frederic Malle will be making a personal appearance for his candle line, Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills. Chances are, even those who thought they weren't "candle people" will walk away converts.

Guess gets Seductive with a perfume launch party in Hollywood

Vanessa, Alyssa Miller, Maurice Marciano

It’s easy to associate the Guess brand with tight jeans, big hair and bombshell looks, and the L.A.-based company’s Wednesday night fete for its new fragrance, Guess Seductive, didn’t disappoint in sex appeal or young Hollywood celeb turnout.

Solange Knowles Spinning

Held at Colony nightclub in Hollywood, guests such as Mark Salling, Brittany Snow, Samaire Armstrong, Roxy Oiln and Carlos Lopez danced to music spun by Solange Knowles. Host Vanessa Hudgens -- looking rather Goth in black, with smudgy black eye makeup and her layers of tangled raven tresses -- stuck to a secluded booth near Knowles' DJ perch.

Tester size vials of Guess Seductive were within arms’ reach of every banquette and bar in the club, and guests were given a full-sized bottle of the woodsy “floriental” to take home, spritz and channel their very own inner-bombshell. Speaking of bombshells, the face of this new fragrance, model Alyssa Miller, also was in attendance. Her dark brown hair and full Brooke Shields eyebrows aren’t the features we’re used to seeing from a Guess girl (think Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova or Anna Nicole Smith) but hopefully Miller marks the return of the company’s campaign cover girls who were so evocative of the 1990s.

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Taylor Momsen sings for Galliano. Snooki has a new 'do. Coco Chanel still fascinates in a new book.

Snooki The sellers of luxury goods -- high-priced clothes and accessories among them -- are having to make sure that aspirational customers, those mid-income folks who used to splurge on luxury goods, feel like they are getting value for their money. Otherwise the wallets don't open anymore. [Wall Street Journal]

Taylor Momsen performed Monday night at the Paris launch of Galliano's new fragrance, Parlez-Moi d'Amour. Made sense. She's the celebrity "face" of the perfume. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Actress Clemence Posey mixed it up with biker boots and a smashing gold statement jacket at the Toronto Film Festival. [FabSugar]

"Gossip Girl" returned for its fourth season Monday night, and as always provided a fashion feast. The hairstyles, clothes, hats and accessories were worth waiting for. [BellaSugar]

It seems like we just can't get enough Coco. After being profiled in a made-for-television movie and two biopics in the last few years, Ms. Chanel is the subject of a just-released biography that delves specifically into her relationships with Brits and Americans. "Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life," by Justine Picardie, is published by Harper Collins. The book unearths details about, for instance, Chanel's foray into British society in the 1940s and 1950s, and her love affair with the dashing Duke of Westminster. [WWD]

Snooki has de-poufed! That's right, she of "Jersey Shore" infamy has changed the hairstyle she says she's worn since age 16 in favor of eyebrow-grazing bangs. It's a more "mature" look, she says. [The Cut]

After a couple of "practice" runs with kids collections for Gap, Stella McCartney is planning to launch her own children's label. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Forever 21 has taken the lead over Wet Seal as having the lowest average prices among teen specialty stores. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Your morning fashion and beauty report: It seems like everyone is going a little Gaga ... even Cher at the VMA.

Cher

Before there was Lady Gaga, with her outrageous take on fashion, there was Cher. Both had tongues wagging at Sunday's Video Music Awards. As she accepted eight awards, Gaga had numerous costume changes, with outfits including a voluminous black gown with spiked headdress and a dress that looked like it was made from a slab of meat. Cher channeled her look of 20 or 30 years ago in the number above, and it looks like something Gaga might wear.

Gaga is the hottest celebrity around, and Coty chalks up a win for snagging her for a fragrance deal. [WWD]

Judith Leiber handbags have been must-have accessories for women as different as First Lady Barbara Bush and "Sex and the City's" Carrie Bradshaw. Now Leiber herself is buying up as many as she can, with plans to start a museum of her work. [Wall Street Journal]

Like a number of other high-end designers who are having to adapt to a damaged economy, Vera Wang has expanded into mid-range and budget markets. It can be a risky strategy, but it seems to be paying off. Wang gets headlines for gowning brides such as Chelsea Clinton and Hillary Duff, but it's her line for Kohl's and licensed products (Serta mattresses, Wedgwood china) that bring in the bulk of the dough these days. [Wall Street Journal]

Could there be a more unlikely pairing than UGG and Jimmy Choo? The match-up has given birth to limited- edition boots in the familiar UGG silhouette studded with glitzy gold and silver grommets. Model Amber Valletta models them in an ad for the collaboration. [FabSugar]
