Your morning fashion and beauty report: Heather Morris 'Flirts,' Gwyneth Paltrow shocks and British Vogue picks 20 best-dressed

December 16, 2010 |  8:56 am

Aheather

-- Heather Morris -- you know her at Brittany on "Glee"-- has been tapped as brand ambassador for Flirt, a beauty line owned by Estee Lauder. Through next fall, the blond dancer/actress will promote products such as All That Lash mascara and Luv-A-Licious fragrance. [WWD]

-- The amazing white, lace-up Pucci dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the Los Angeles premiere of "Country Strong" is getting a lot of buzz of the shock-and-awe variety: Why didn't it fall off? What, no knickers? How can a woman older than 25 get away with that? Well, she could, she did and FabSugar  shows some similar, albeit less risky, alternatives.

-- Speaking of amazing dresses, Fashionista has a snapshot of Nicole Richie in the very, very froufrou Marchesa ball gown that she wore at her wedding. It is not a look just anyone could pull off, with a tight fitting bodice that blooms into the frilliest puff of a tulle skirt. But Nicole looks lovely!

-- Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Kate Winslet are among the fashionable ladies on British Vogue's list of 20 best-dressed in 2010. [Vogue UK]

-- Designer Diane von Furstenberg will be among honorees receiving the AmFAR Award of Courage in February. She and fellow recipients Bill Clinton and Elizabeth Taylor are slated to receive the awards at a gala thrown by the AIDS foundation in New York. [WWD]

-- Exhibition, a new luxury magazine, has an unusual plan: to publish once a year and explore just one topic. The inaugural issue will be on newsstands globally in January and will be dedicated to lipstick. That's right: lipstick. Who knew we needed an entire issue of a magazine devoted to it? [BellaSugar]

-- For next fall, men's suit designers are shifting away from the 1950s "Mad Men" aesthetic to clothing with more body and strong patterns such as herringbones, tweeds and plaids. [WWD] (subscription required)

Milan Fashion Week: Pucci collection doesn't sizzle; it fizzles

September 27, 2010 |  1:46 pm

Pucci1 I had such high hopes for the Pucci collection, which has been getting so much love on the red carpet of late. Especially when I read in the notes before seeing the show that designer Peter Dundas was reworking the famous Pucci prints by bleaching and tie-dying them in batik patterns. What a cool concept!

Except that it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. On many pieces, the prints faded so much into the background, they became unremarkable. The Greek-inspired blue-and-white print cotton voile maxidress that opened the show, for example, could have been from any fashion house (Cavalli? Gucci?); the same goes for the white tunic with a swirling blue design on front. (The best print piece in the whole show was a saffron and brown maxidress with white batik overdye, worn under a caramel leather jacket with whipstitching.)

Pucci8 The rich hippie theme continued with bellbottoms laced in front and worn with headscarves and schoolboy blazers, as well as maxi skirts slit high to reveal suede over-the-knee boots.

But where Dundas really excelled was with those red-carpet looks aimed squarely at the rock-'n'-roll celeb set, namely a slinky black gown thick with embroidery, tassel and mirror details. and cutaway lacing revealing more than a hint of skin. (Kylie Minogue was practically salivating over it in the front row.)

Pucci11 Still, as I was watching the show, it felt as if the prime directive was to round out the collection with salable accessories, such as blanket-weave cross-body bags, clutches trimmed with lapis and turquoise stones, and tie-dyed tasseled Pucci print scarves, all of which were pretty great. And let's face it, if they can sell enough of those, the rest won't matter.

Fashion Diary: Pucci's star is rising

May 21, 2010 |  4:17 pm

At the Cannes Film Festival this year, everyone from Eva Longoria Parker to Eva Herzigova to Evangeline Lily was wearing Emilio Pucci. Peter Dundas, the new designer for the Florentine fashion house, has become the go-to guy for the red carpet set. And why not? He can make one dreamy dress, whether it's the ethereal teal-print gown Sarah Jessica Parker is wearing on the posters for " Sex and the City 2" or the dramatic, navy-and-black cutaway design Sienna Miller chose for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala last month.

Featured artists include Dazed & Confused magazine contributor Baiba Ladiga, the late, great movie-poster artist Bob Peak, London artist Coco Pit, L.A. resident Esther Kim, high-fashion collaborator Jarno Kettunen, commercial fashion illustrator Laura Laine and Danish artist Naja Conrad Hansen.

Milan Fashion Week: Emilio Pucci targets Hollywood's haute hippies

March 1, 2010 | 10:29 am
Emilio pucci milan fashion week
First it was Balmain, and now it is Emilio Pucci that is generating heat in fashion circles as the new-old It brand.

In just three seasons as artistic director for Emilio Pucci, Peter Dundas has succeeded in forging a sexy, rock 'n roll boho identity for the brand beyond the iconic geometric prints beloved by 1960s jet setters such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

It's playing well in Hollywood. Kate Hudson wore Dundas' white, long-sleeved gown with a plunge back to the Screen Actors Guild Awards this season. And with all that was on offer on the runway, there's no reason to think we won't see Pucci on the Oscars red carpet, too.

Palm Springs' Modernism Week throws a fashion show

February 24, 2010 | 11:15 am

Modernism_fashion_week_PS_1

Less than 48 hours after wrapping New York Fashion Week at the Bryant Park tents, taking in Tommy Hilfiger's fall/winter 2010 "preppy with a pop" men's and women's runway collection -- a retrofitting of the brand's prepster heritage circa 1985 -- I found myself taking in another fashion show heavy that mined the past.

But unlike most of the fashion flock -- who had winged their way to London for that city's Fashion Week (Feb. 19-24), I was sitting in a basement ballroom of the Hotel Zozo in Palm Springs taking in the inaugural Modernism Week vintage fashion show.

The show was made up of approximately 50 vintage looks (mostly women's, with a handful of men's) spanning the period from 1945 to 1970 and shown in chronological order, beginning with a navy blue woman's suit accompanied by the song "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and ending with a white wedding gown shown to the strains of  "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In."

Boho scuba gear for the jet set at Emilio Pucci

September 28, 2009 | 12:00 pm

Rage_pucci

Designers in Milan are reclaiming the look of the jet set. Like Frida Giannini at Gucci, Peter Dundas went sexy and strong in his second season at Emilio Pucci, with draped minidresses and mini skirts, lace-up corset pants and cropped, leather and snakeskin jackets that had a 1980s North Beach Leather vibe.

This collection was less tricky than Gucci's with a minimum of surface embellishment, save for a sprinkling of sequins here and there, and some Boho fringe. Dundas struck a balance between sporty separates (great tulip-shape pants with gold snaps up the sides), sexy evening wear and covetable Boho accessories.

Where last season he practically ignored the house's signature prints, this season he reinterpreted them in a modern way, blowing them up in size, in some cases infusing them with metallic color, and splashing them on floaty racerback gowns, swimwear and scuba-inspired cropped jackets with peekaboo cutouts.

It all made for a fast-paced, high-impact show that should put Pucci on the path to becoming a new-old "it" brand.

MFW: Emilio Pucci's prints for party people

February 28, 2009 |  3:30 pm

MILAN -- Another old house with another new designer. Norwegian Peter Dundas showed his first collection for Raage_pucci2 Emilio Pucci on Saturday, injecting a young, sexy, '80s-tinged energy into the Florentine label known for its psychedelic prints.

He opened with a series of clingy dresses, in faded earth-tone Pucci prints, that were so short you almost saw more than you wanted to. Add to that over-the-knee suede boots and the message was clear: This is not your grandmother's Pucci.

Slinky, zippered biker pants in denim or snakeskin were clearly aimed at the nightclubbing set, paired with enormous fur chubbys, oversized thunderbolt-print blazers or squiggle-print silk camp shirts.

For evening, the prints were deconstructed into swirling, beaded embroideries on skimpy minidresses, some with graphic lace cutouts. It all made for a compelling package. But with so many brands already doing the rock star look (Gucci, Balmain, Alexander Wang), is there really room for another?
