Back on Island, Koreans Find Ruin

YEONPYEONG, South Korea—Hundreds of the displaced residents of Yeonpyeong Island, which was shelled by North Korea three months ago, returned home Friday to ruins of broken glass, ceramic tiles and twisted metal as the South Korean government's housing assistance for them ended.

The returning residents—699 of approximately 1,400 were back by Friday night, an official said—found the 30 buildings or so that were destroyed in the Nov. 23 artillery barrage, the North's first attack of South Korean land since the Korean War, to be in the same ruined condition.
