So Ronaldo has finally decided to put an end to a glittering career. He may have let himself go over the past few years but there is no denying his skill, ability and class which propelled him to the status of the best player in the world in his prime. Congratulations Ronaldo, you have achieved in your career what most footballers can only dream of. You have won the highest individual accolades and the most prestigious trophies there are to win, and while you have certainly had your doubters over the years, like a true legend you have put these doubters in their place by continuing to score important goals for some of the top clubs in the world and for your country on the highest international stages. There have been a few lows (WC final in 1998 springs to mind), but all in all you will be remembered as one of the greatest players to have played for the greatest footballing nation of all. I don't think I am alone in saying you will be missed, but I wish you all the best for your future off the playing field.

Watching him from WC '98 onwards was a pleasure. Yes he (and the fans) missed a lot through his injuries but for all the criticism of him he shone on the big stage.

As contrite as this sounds I'd loved to have seen him play as a teenager in USA '94. I know he was a young teenager and Romario & Bebeto didnt require any goal scoring assistance but Im sure he'd have outshone them all had he taken to the field.

A true great of the game, up there with Maradona, Pele, Cryff, Zidane and their ilk.

Thank you for the memories!

Supreme player. We'll miss his talent. He won so many things. Well served to him. Anyway, debaters1, Maradona and Pele were hugely better than Ronaldo. And why did you mention Zidane? That donkey...

Fantastic player - immense power but amazingly light on his feet and a deadly finisher. Expert at the toe-poke finish which meant goalies/defenders couldn't tell whether he was lining up for a shot or continuing to run with the ball - either way he was a nightmare to deal with. So often thrilling to watch.

On the international stage his career was magnificent, blighted only by that weird episode before the WC final in Paris 1998.

On the club stage you can't help feeling what might have been. With injuries and his seemingly unerring ability to chose to play for the wrong club at the wrong moment he only won 1 top level league medal and no Champions Leage medals. Like some other great players his messy personal life seems not to have helped him on the pitch.

One of the real greats, that's for sure.

Ronaldo was simply different class. The term "genius" is thrown about regularly today to describe footballers, but rarely are they justified. Ronaldo was a genius. He simply had everything, and the fact he had almost 2 years of his career, which probably would have been his prime years, cut short by injury and still won the World Player of the Year award 3 times is simply sensational.

I'll always remember that goal he scored for Barcelona when he ran from the half way line, beating 6 or 7 men before scoring, and Bobby Robson had his head in his hands, simply couldn't believe what Ronaldo had just done.

Ronaldo, a true legend.

Just want to say, he doesn't dive nearly as much as strikers do these days, has enough strength to fend off defenders and speed to beat any offside traps with ease.

there's another video with ebtter quality but the music is horrible so i linked this one.

also, number 8 on this one is incredible

what impresses me most about brazilian strikers is that they hit the ball REALLY hard. You can see with the goals, even when he strikes it along the ground, it still travels very fast.

We saw at the world cup also, the brazilian strikers just absolutely blasts the ball. You hardly see that with any other nation, even Argentina.

I would say Ronaldo is better than Maradona. The problem with comparing Ronaldo and Pele is that there is not enough footages of Pele.

Zakk, I didnt say he was better, merely that he is one of the greats of the game. Noone is better than Maradona, imho. It doen't mean that Ronaldo would be out of place in a team with Diego.

one of the best ever - not the best - there are players I preferred to watch, but...

the mix of power and pace was awesome - made Drogba look like an anoxeric snail

He has tremendous pace and accuracy which is a nightmare for defenders to defend. Simply a legend.

For me Ronaldo stands out from Maradona, Pele, Cruyff etc due to his physical abilities. Easily the most dangerous player I've ever seen. Messi is awesome but Ronaldo was a freak and there were times when he just wasn't human.
