Wisconsin Unions Calling for a General Strike if Walker Plan Passes

THIS JUST IN:

In an attempt to follow their European counterparts, public-sector unions in Wisconsin are endorsing a call for a general strike if Governor Scott Walker’s plan passes and is signed into law.

As the Wisconsin Legislature reconvened this morning, a key federation of nearly 100 labor unions in the state is calling for a general strike for about 45,000 people if Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill is signed into law. The South Central Federation of Labor is calling for a general strike if the bill becomes law.

[snip]

Sources told BizTimes that other labor unions that would be affected by Walker’s bill also are pondering going out on strike if the proposal is approved.

While Wisconsin has been deemed to be “ground zero” by the unions, if union bosses’ bullying tactics succeed in shutting down the state of Wisconsin, they will be emboldened to shut down other states as well._________________

I hope someone is checking union contracts

bk Tuesday, February 22nd at 3:39PM EST (link)

Not crossing some other union’s picket line is perhaps one thing; calling a strike because some unrelated union is striking is definitely another.

Just exactly who works for whom?

pastisprolog Tuesday, February 22nd at 3:47PM EST (link)

Do public sector employees work for the taxpayers, or do taxpayers work for the public sector employees? Maybe it’s time we all find out, once and for all, who works for whom?

That is what this is all about

dinorightmarie Tuesday, February 22nd at 4:30PM EST (link)

For years, public unions have negotiated with fellow - not their bosses - to take taxpayer dollars and use them for political purposes, while stuffing their own pockets. The BOSS of public employees is WE THE TAXPAYER. We have been cut off from the negotiating table all along. Any public strike, just as FDR said, is an obstruction of government functioning, and thus should be against the law.

Time to make public unions - and any others who hold “solidarity” with them - illegal, as obstructing justice and our Constitutional republic’s principles. In essence, anti-American insurrectionists.

correction....

dinorightmarie Tuesday, February 22nd at 4:32PM EST (link)

That “fellow” should say “fellows” - as in fellows-in-government being paid by taxpayers, whether elected to that position or just working as a “boss” in a public job.

I'd say it's a bit more of

The_Gadfly Wednesday, February 23rd at 12:26PM EST (link)

they negotiated with their CEOs who screwed over their stockholders (taxpayers), which is more or less what happened in Detroit with The Big 3 automakers. The key difference being, you volunteer to be a stockholder.

Ronald Reagan, air traffic controllers.

Let’s hope Scott Walker has the courage of Reagan, because it’s looking like he’s going to need it.

vortigernpendragon Tuesday, February 22nd at 5:20PM EST (link)

With close to 10% unemployment, I’m sure the schools would have no trouble finding new teachers to replace the ones who are striking. Just fire them and hire some new ones. That would make them think twice about striking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vkTQErQWko

My thoughts exactly...

merryj1 Tuesday, February 22nd at 9:48PM EST (link)

Not only the teachers, but any/all support staff (office workers, administrators, etc.) trying to facilitate a work stoppage or slow-down. Just post some “now hiring” signs and see how quickly good, solid replacement workers line up for jobs at fair wages and reasonable benefits - and who understand and agree that, as employees,.they will expect to contribute to their own retirement and health benefits.

People to apply, sure.

The_Gadfly Wednesday, February 23rd at 12:28PM EST (link)

People who meet the requirements passed into law and regulation by the friends of the unions in previous governments, not so much. But maybe Walker can fix that right after he fires the teachers. Frankly, these days I think many schools would improve if we applied the Bill Buckley phone book principle for selecting teachers.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

Walker is Not in the Same Position as Reagan

flannery Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:26PM EST (link)

Walker is not the employer for all the employees covered by the bill. The teachers are mostly employees of the various local school boards. Other employees work for cities, counties or special districts. The decision to fire these employees is in the authority of each loacl unit of government.

The call for a general strike appears to involve private sector unions too. Whether the private sector employees can legally strike would be a question of federal law and their local collective bargaining agreement rather than Wisconsin public sector labor law.

Reagan was dealing with a clearly illegal strike by one group of employees who were under his control. Reagan could legally fire them. Walker is not in the same position with the same authority.

Excellent point flannery

carolina Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:32PM EST (link)

Walker is doing this to EMPOWER the local govts so they can make the budget changes they need to make.

This is the medium of now

gamechange11two Wednesday, February 23rd at 1:36AM EST (link)

Maybe enterprising locals could put up some web sites to collect resumes from qualified teachers around the country. Nothing says “I’m serious” like the ability to replace dead wood.

Also, take a moment to give Scott Walker a thumbs up. I did in less than 25 words here:

http://walker.wi.gov/section.asp?linkid=1714&locid=177

The servers might be hot already, but they could use a good word, I’m sure.

It just hit me.

"...courage of Reagan..."

edintexas Wednesday, February 23rd at 9:04AM EST (link)

I suspect Walker does have that sort of courage, but I don’t know that he has the sort of power that Reagan had to peremptorily fire workers. Is there a WI state statute forbidding strikes by public workers? The air traffic controllers stated they were going out on strike, giving Reagan the opening to order them back to work and fire all who did not return. So far the situation in WI is a “sick out” (complete with fraudulent physician’s notes) and that is a different legal issue, with the State faced with having to prove there is an illegal strike (if, indeed, a strike is illegal in WI).

The Employer Makes the Firing Decision.

flannery Wednesday, February 23rd at 1:39PM EST (link)

There is a Wisconsin statute that would prohibit strikes by public employees in this situation. Illegal strikers may be fired. The decision to fire the illegal striker will be made by the employer. Walker, as the employer of most state employees, can fire those employees. However the State (and therefore Walker) is not the employer of most teachers and other local government employees. The local school board, city or county etc. as the employer of those employees will make the termination decision. Walker is not the employer and therefore cannot fire the teachers etc.

altexas Tuesday, February 22nd at 3:59PM EST (link)

and do not know Wisconsin law or politics. My knee jerk reaction is let them strike. Fire them all then slowly and carefully hire non-socialist, non-union replacements. If that takes a year to complete, that would save a LOT of money and actually give the children a chance for an education.

Education for the children is clearly not a priority with this union mentality.

Hear, hear.

It’s not like the kids are learning anything anyway. They’d probably pick up more on their own if they didn’t have to be in public school all day.

Firing 45K public worker strikers

steve010 Wednesday, February 23rd at 9:50AM EST (link)

would certainly help the unemployment figures because fired public worker strikers can’t get unemployment insurance and wouldn’t be counted as unemployed. WI wouldn’t have to replace the teachers since only 40% of the kids graduate from high school now. Just take the 60% and tell them to stay home.

This is an opportunity.

Save unemployment costs, too

Raven Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:03PM EST (link)

Being fired for cause automatically makes one ineligible for unemployment benefits.
And the union wouldn’t have a leg to stand on arguing against it, because strikes by public sector employees are illegal.
Hard to argue that firing someone for an illegal act is a violation of contract…

The beginning of the end

nivlem Tuesday, February 22nd at 4:05PM EST (link)

Yesterday, the SEIU bus was in Raleigh, NC. The bus schedule is on the SEIU website.

According to the Raleigh News and Observer one hundred protestors were in attendance. (if this is true to the N&O reporting, this means 50 were actually there. ). Whether 50 or 100 , it was a pathetic showing of support.

The winds are not behind the unions, and they know it. This is their last stand, and they will be making every possible effort not to lose this battle. It will be ugly. This will turn more and more people against them. Without the public with them a win will be very difficult for them.

In addition, if the federal government is shut down because an agreement cannot be made, the Dems will lose. The public will not support them this time.
The timing of this could not be worse on the federal level for the Dems.

The stronger our opposition is expressed, the closer we are to ending this battle. If the SEIU bus is in your area, take time to show up in support of the Rep. State Governors fighting this battle for us. Take pictures, put them on the Internet, and spread the news of how little support they are getting.

It is difficult. . .

msctex Tuesday, February 22nd at 6:26PM EST (link)

. . .to rally public support while at the same time threatening the public with not showing up for work.

It is impossible to do both, expect to be paid for not showing up, and hope for public approval.

The teachers are just doing what their leaders in the legislature are doing.

There is a fundamental and negative cultural shift when individuals move from thinking they should keep the fruits of their own labor to believing they’re entitled to the fruits of others’ labor. Fox is reporting that Indiana Gov Daniels caved

johnnyd Tuesday, February 22nd at 5:18PM EST (link)

“Gov. Mitch Daniels signaled this afternoon that Republicans should drop the right-to-work bill that has brought the Indiana House to a standstill for two days and imperiled other measures.

Daniels told reporters this afternoon that he expected House Democrats will return to work if the bill dies. It would be unfortunate if other bills are caught up in the turmoil, he said.

He will not send out state police to corral the Democrats, the Republican governor said.

The Democrat minority has right to express its views, he added.

The governor clung to his view that this is not the year to tackle right to work.”

Oh and by the way Gov. Daniels, if you are so concerned with education, your first act would be to break up the unions. The teachers’ union is one of the primary reason that our public school system is in the horrible shape that it is in.

What a moron. Wisconsin can legislate whatever it needs to in order to rein in the power of the unions AND the socialists/democrats while they are taking a vacation in Illinois, so long as it’s not budgetary. They can make WI a right to work state today, but does Mitch take the ball and run with it to assist doing the same in IL? Does he suggest that the legislature resist turning IL into another WI, with thugs and criminals running through the halls of government, making threats at the people’s representatives?

“The Democrat minority has right to express its views.” Except of course, that they are not expressing their views. In order to do that they would have to be at work, expressing those views. What they are doing is running around with their fingers in their ears screaming “I can’t hear you!! Nah, nah nah! You can’t make me!!” while obstructing the workings of their state government. They are expressing their contempt for the will of the people. Talk of a massive strike by the State’s Unions reminds me of the Reagan Era when the Air Controllers walked out. Reagan gave them an ultimatum, “work or else”. Sounds like a line from the Godfather film you think. I say this remedy is still available to the Governor. Return to work or be terminated. Just think of the opportunities for ones who want to work. I read locally that 700 applicants applied for 1 janitors position. Just think we have about 15 million unemployed Americans that would be readily available to apply for those open positions.
