MIRPUR, Bangladesh: Pace bowler Shafiul Islam claimed four wickets while skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Mohammad Ashraful took two apiece to steer Bangladesh to a 27-run win over Ireland in their World Cup match in Group B on Friday.

Batting first, Bangladesh reached 205 all out in 49.2 overs after a 44 from Tamim Iqbal, along with two useful innings from Raqibul Hassan (38) and Mushfiqur Rahim (36).

Ireland started steadily in reply but was dismissed for 178 with five overs to spare in its first match of the tournament.

Niall O'Brien topscored for the Irish with 38, while Shafiul led the Bangladesh bowling with 4-21 as his side got points on the board after opening with a defeat by fellow co-host last Saturday.

Paul Stirling was the first to fall in the Irish response, stumped by Rahim for nine off Abdur Razzak. Skipper and opener William Porterfield was next to go, caught by Hassan off Shakib, who returned figures of 2-28.

Ashraful finished on 2-42 after starting out by removing Ed Joyce, caught and bowled for 16, and then dismissing Andrew White for 10.

O'Brien had been looking comfortable before Iqbal caught him at deep midwicket off a Shakib delivery when Ireland needed 96 runs to win.

Shafiul took the wicket of Kevin O'Brien for 37, caught by substitute Sohrawardi Shuvo. He later dismissed Andre Botha on 22 and trapped Trent Johnston lbw before claiming his final victim, Boyd Rankin, caught by Zunaed Siddique.

Earlier, Botha took 3-32 as Bangladesh struggled despite a confident start, having reached 49-0 in five overs after winning the toss and opting to bat first.

Ireland rallied when opener Imrul Kayes (12) was stumped by Niall O'Brien off John Mooney. Three more top order wickets followed to leave the tournament co-host on 86-4.

Along with Botha's bowling, George Dockrell chipped in with 2-23 while Trent Johnston claimed 2-40.

Zunaed Siddique (3) was the second wicket to fall, run out from a direct hit by Ed Joyce.

Iqbal, who faced 43 balls and struck seven boundaries, went soon afterward as he met a Botha delivery with a drive outside off stump - only to be caught by Porterfield at point.

Bangladesh was then dealt another major blow when skipper Shakib (16) was caught and bowled by Botha in the 16th over. Dropped on 15 by Porterfield just two balls before, Shakib failed to cash in on his second chance.

Botha also trapped Shafiul lbw for two runs.

Rahim and Hassan briefly revived the innings with a fifth wicket partnership that added 61 runs before Rahim departed in the 34th over.

Rahim (36) was caught by White off Dockrell with Bangladesh on 147-5, while Ashraful fell to the same combination.

Hassan was run out by White, while Johnston dismissed Naeem Islam (29) and bowled Razzak for 11.

Bangladesh is just one place above Ireland in the one-day international rankings and the Irish beat Bangladesh in both the 2007 World Cup and the World Twenty20 in 2009.

The tigers were fearless in their kill, though it had struggled with bat. The captain's strategy to attack with the spinners right from the second over was indeed a brave decision, and it went well with the tigers. And a special thanks to Shafiul for finally being able to prove that he knows how to swing the ball in both the directions, a fact which even surprised the batting legend Gavasker in the commentrey box.
