7 Free Things To Do In and Around Phoenix - March 2011

This week you can dance the jig, see cool rocks, eat a cloud, bait a hook, think positively, stay on the trail and swing away.

What: Sonoran Sunset Series
When: Thursday, March 10, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Veterans Oasis Park, Chandler
The Knockabouts, a local Irish band, will perform. The band plays traditional Irish pub tunes, blended with smooth harmonies and a rowdy energy. Snacks will be available for donation and guests may bring chairs, blankets and food.

What: Rock Art Tour of Hayden Butte: Hayden Butte Preserve
When: Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 10 a.m.
Where: Tempe Police Department Main Station, 120 E. Fifth St.
Learn about Hohokam rock art with Amy Douglass, Tempe History Museum administrator and archaeologist. This is a moderate hike for adults and children at least 8 years of age. To participate, meet at the trailhead behind the Tempe Police Department Main Station and wear comfortable shoes; bring water and binoculars.

When: Friday, March 11 and Sunday, March 13, 2011

Get a free taste of the new Little Debbie Cloud Cakes. The Little Debbie Smile Squad will be at the following locations: Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 11 at Walmart, 1825 W. Bell Rd., Phoenix; starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 11 at Luke AFB Commissary, Glendale; starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 11 at Walmart, 13770 W. Bell Rd., Surprise; starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 13 at US Airways Center during the Phoenix Suns vs. Orlando Magic game. What: Diamonds in the Rough: Fishing For Fun and Dinner
When: Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
Where: Cabela's, Glendale
Come to Lake Pleasant with Ranger Terry. Cabela's will provide the equipment, or bring your own. No licenses are required. Learn to cast, reel, bait, identify signs of fish and talk about habitat and how to catch and release the right way. Exact location yet to be determined, but no boats are involved. Email reservation to patricia.zeman@cabelas.com and you'll receive directions and specifics. Cabela's Diamonds in the Rough is a ladies-only outdoor adventure club. No men allowed.

What: Cookie Company presents "Unstoppable Me"
When: Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 2 p.m.
Where: Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave., Tempe
Join in on the musical fun as two young kids, their parents and a magical bird discover how to hold on to no-limit thinking as they strive to reach their dreams.

What: Hiking Safety for Kids
When: Monday, March 14, 2011 from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
Where: Cabela's, Glendale
One session in a new series of outdoor-related activities that are perfect for families. All Cabela's Kid's Kamp events are held at the store, are free, and require no previous skill or experience. The classes are perfect for kids age 9 - 14. Class size is limited to the first 15 who sign up on event day.

What: Demo Day Extravaganza
When: Tuesday, March 15, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Whirlwind Golf Club, Chandler
Test the latest and greatest products from Callaway, Nike, Ping, Cobra, Laser Link, and Pure Grips. Short game skills challenge from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (there's a fee for this), visit with fitness experts and learn how to improve your game, enter for a chance to win a foursome at Whirlwind Golf Club.
