Mega Man X2 for SNES/PS2
When it comes to sequels, Capcom is no stranger to them. And when Mega Man X became a hit, another entry following its storyline was inevitable. And how good is it? Pretty good. With new moves, new enemies, and the great platforming gameplay of the first one, this is Mega Man X2 for the Super Nintendo and being played on the Playstation 2 compilation disc of Mega Man X Collection. Pelican Accessories PS1 & PS2 Joystick
Classic Game Room reviews the PELICAN ACCESSORIES Playstation 1 and 2 Joystick for use with PS2 and PS1 fighting games and other videogames where an “arcade style” joystick is preferred. This cheap, palstic fighting stick for the PS2 and PS1 can be used to play Playstation fighters like Tekken 2 and 3 or Virtua Fighter 4 (among many others). It has the standard Playstation buttons and L1, R1, L2 and R2. A joystick with arcade style ball top is acceptable, as long as you don’t pay much for this odd-looking controller. Rubber pads with “nubbins” seem to be the standout feature on the Pelican Accessories PS2 fighting joystick. This CGR video review of Playstation 2 and PS1 hardware reviews a Pelican Accessories fighting style arcade joystick for PS2.

Katamari Damacy for PS2
There are twin sumo wrestlers walking down a dock in their outfits while a man dangles a carrot from a fishing pole to lure a toy horse in the water to him. And diving from one side of the water to the other is a swimmer leading a school of fish. This crazy, confusing, and unexplainable depiction of our world can only be part of Katamari Damacy for the Playstation 2. (more…)

Freekstyle for PS2/Gamecube
Freekstyle is an over the top motocross game by EA Sports BIG. Freekstyle is much like NBA Street, SSX, Sled Storm, MLB Slugfest, and NBA Jam. It’s a game that takes the traditional Motocross sport and makes it bigger and wackier.
Freekstyle, plays a lot like SSX, and you can really feel it in the control scheme. That’s not to say it’s exactly the same, but it’s obvious that it was made by the same company. (more…)

Dragon Ball Z Budokai for PS2
A surprisingly good fighting game that is based off an anime? And it’s accessible to fighting novices while still keeping some depth to it? Believe it or not, it’s true. This is Dragon Ball Z: Budokai for the Playstation 2.
True to the show’s combative nature, this is a fighting game. Players can take one of the twenty-three playable characters to duke it out in head to head duels, a world tournament, a story mode, or just for practice. (more…)

Destroy All Humans for PS2
When you think of sandbox games, what do you think of? The Grand Theft Auto series obviously. Now imagine Grand Theft Auto but the main character is an alien. Now, being an alien you must have a few advantages over being a human because aliens are awesome. Not that I have anything against humans. I just think they should be destroyed!
The story consists of homicidal alien Cryptosporidium going to earth in search of his clone. It’s fairly interesting as you compete with the military and the CIA going around the environments which are very varied. It takes place in the 50s in a variety of different places and you can travel to all of them via the mother ship. (more…)

Freedom Fighters for PS2
As good as Red Dawn was, the only problem with it is that it never spawned a video game. Fans of the movie never got to defend their home country from invading Russian forces on their home consoles. Until 2003, when IO Interactive realized this mistake by the movie’s producers and developed a game that, while not based on the movie, is heavily influenced by it. This is Freedom Fighters for the Playstation 2. (more…)

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus for PS2
In most cases, grand larceny will result in a long time in some sort of prison, whether federal, local, or some other kind. Not so for the Cooper Gang, who are out to play a halfway version of a pseudo Robin Hood by robbing from the rich but keeping for themselves. Make no mistake though. They are the good guys, even if they rob from people. More so robbing from dangerous, evil criminals and hoarding their new found wealth for themselves and their activities, all while dodging a tenacious inspector and landing said other criminals in jail. This is Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus for the Playstation 2. (more…)
Prince of Persia Sands of Time for PlayStation 2
For all the platformers that were seen on the Nintendo 64 and before, in the past few console generations there has been a severe lack of them. The Suffering for PS2/PC/Xbox
Developed by Surreal software, The Suffering is an action horror game with some survival elements. The Suffering is a third and first person shooter, allowing players to switch between both.
The Suffering follows Torque, a man who was convicted of murdering his ex-wife and child. He is being walked to his cell on Carnate Island in Death Row as two prison guards argue about being glad he’s going to get what he deserves. Before you know it the prison starts shaking, alarms go off, you hear fellow Death Row inmates around you dying, and suddenly, you’re all alone. You grab a Shiv as a weapon and head to the door of the Death Row area as a guard runs up to you, commanding you to get back in your cell as he is chopped up by some mysterious blades. Space Gun for Arcade
When I say “space” and “gun” in a video game, you probably think Dead Space, Doom, Alien vs. Predator or countless other games that have something to do with this large sub-genre. This isn’t any of those. It is Space Gun by Taito. A very literal name for what the game is about. (more…)

Grand Theft Auto III for PS2
What can I say about Grand Theft Auto III (GTA III)? It’s been reviewed and reviewed again. What can I say that could be new, something that you’ve never heard of?
Not much.
GTA III is the game that started the whole “open world phenomenon” that has populated from 2001 to now. It inspired its numerous spinoffs, most of which are better than GTA III itself. It also inspired numerous knockoffs, most of which are inferior to GTA III. (more…)

Text Review King of Fighters XI for PS2
Like horror films, there’s almost no functional point to reviewing a King of Fighters (KOF) game. It has its built-in audience that will buy and love it, critics be damned. For a series like KOF, it isn’t even a matter of whether or not fans will like the newest installment; the only question is whether or not move sets, move priorities, and hit boxes have changed. CGR Undertow – Neo Contra for PS2
Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of NEO CONTRA for the PlayStation 2 (PS2). Neo Contra was released back in 2004 from Konami. The Contra franchise doesn’t return to its side-scrolling shooter roots in this game, even though many die hard Contra would like to see it do so. The shoot ‘em up and/or run and gun action is still there though and the frantic pace just keeps going. Capcom Fighting Evolution for PS2
I remember first seeing a Street Fighter II arcade machine when I was probably five years old. It was at the neighborhood Round Table Pizza, and after a few too many Garlic Twists, I placed my quarter on top of the display to reserve my place, picked Ken because I liked his surfer hair, and proceeded to get my butt handed to me by an expert Guile player before I could get off a single hadouken. Needless to say, like many gamers over the past twenty years, I was hooked. (more…)

Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening for PS2
Capcom had an unexpected hit with Devil May Cry when it first hit the PS2 in 2001. Injecting Resident Evil with adrenaline turned out to be an instant classic – the half-demon Dante and his crazy, over the top, style quickly winning me over and stealing many hours of my life. Imagine my surprise when Devil May Cry 2 was nothing short of lackluster; everything I had loved about the first entry was removed or butchered. So, when it came to the 3rd entry in the series, I was cautiously optimistic at best. Capcom must have really taken past mistakes to heart; as Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening not only manages to make a return to form, but also improves upon nearly everything that made the original great.
Onimusha 3 for PS2
The Onimusha series was one of the first series to really help kick off the PS2. Playing close to a medieval Resident Evil with a bit more focus on combat, it quickly gathered a solid fan base that connected to the setting and atmosphere. Its sequel, Onimusha 2, further improved upon all that made the original great – adding in a number of new features and improvements over the original, such as the companion system. Onimusha 3: Demon Siege manages to continue this trend, although not without a few speed bumps. (more…)
Devil May Cry for PS2
Not many game systems have such great and diverse game libraries as the PlayStation 2, but just like any other game system, it took a while for the games that truly showcased the systems’ capabilities to appear. Devil May Cry is not only one of the first titles that truly showed the power of the PS2, but it’s also the game that set the standards for, and arguably created, the modern hack ‘n slash genre. (more…)

The X-Files: Resist or Serve for PS2
I’ve always been a huge fan of the X-files, sure when the show debuted I was way too young to understand the complex plot and I always missed the first part of the episodes because I was extremely frightened of the theme song, but the fantastic atmosphere the show created kept me coming back every week. Then the X-files game for the PlayStation1/PC was released and I was quick to crush the piggy bank, but while I kind of liked the game at the time it’s hard to argue that it was really good. Not only was it a FMV game, a genre which is not exactly renowned for great gameplay, but all of the major characters from the show, including characters Mulder and Scully, only made cameo appearances. Not until 2004 was another game based on the series released, but at least this time it seemed like they would get it right. All the main characters where in the game, voiced by the original actors, and the gameplay was changed to a traditional Survival Horror style in the vein of Resident Evil or Silent Hill. But sadly not everything in the game is as good as it sounds on paper. (more…)

Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal for PS2
Up Your Arsenal is Insomniac’s third Ratchet & Clank game on the PS2 and if there ever was proof that “the third time’s a charm,” then this is it. What started out as a series of straight platformers in an effort for Sony to get themselves a Mario – has turned into one of the most enjoyable action games ever to be released on the mighty PS2. While staying true to the series’ roots, Insomniac upped the action ante but didn’t let the other elements of the game slip. (more…)
Onimusha 4: Dawn of Dreams for PS2
Onimusha has been one of my favorite long running series for the PlayStation 2 (PS2) since its launch. At first playing like an ancient Japanese version of Resident Evil, I quickly fell in love with the setting and characters. As the 3rd entry hit the market, seemingly wrapping up the series as a whole, many fans felt a little disappointed that we received such a mediocre ending to such a promising series. Capcom must have felt the same when creating Dawn of Dreams, the 4th iteration in the series. Sometimes, change is a very good thing.
Combat is the first system that gets the hammer of improvement smashed down upon it. The notoriously slow, unresponsive melee has been replaced by a quicker and more action oriented style of fighting. It comes out feeling like a fusion of stylish action combat with hack and slash – peppered lightly with just a dash of arcade style mayhem. Don’t let the ease of it throw you either; skill is still a must to efficiently handle tougher enemies. The timing based counter is still around and just as useful as it was every other time around. Throw in a ton of weapons to upgrade and unique abilities to learn for a near perfect mix of action, customization and strategy.
The graphics get their fair share of upgrades too. The characters and levels show masterful understanding of the PlayStation 2 that could only come from years of programming for it. The vibrant colors and detailed character models rival some early next gen titles. Excellent music also echoes throughout each stage; creating an engrossing and beautiful atmosphere that will pull you in.
Taking a rather drastic change from the earlier games, Dawn of Dreams uses cinematic style cut scenes to tell a much more involved storyline. Picking up a few years after the 3rd adventure, we are treated to an opening level that could easily be mistaken for the opening to a Japanese action movie. As you trek across Japan as the Black Oni, you will also quickly find that you are not alone recruiting a team of fleshed out and detailed heroes that are completely at your disposal. A few even have connections to past characters, a little something for the long-term Onimusha fan. While I am sure five characters to play as may seem good enough, there is one more feature that really enhances nearly everything.
Co-Op mode, allowing a friend to jump in as the companion character currently with you, is nothing short of a brilliant addition. In one swift move, battles go from good to great. Large scale battles become a flurry of abilities as you work together to wipe out the enemy hordes. Boss battles retain their difficulty, and it even follows the storyline as any character controlled by the 2nd player will be forced to control them during select fights that 1st player isn’t participating in. This should serve as a lesson on how to do offline co-op right, without sacrificing storyline or difficulty.
You will welcome the company, as this isn’t a short journey through the post warring-states era. The game’s numerous levels each sport a little over an hour of game time. This isn’t including later revisits to open previously closed areas, or the 100 level bonus dungeons you can access midway through the game. Each level also typically has a few puzzles thrown in for good measure as if the horde of monsters wasn’t enough for you to handle.
Dawn of Dreams is to Onimusha, as Resident Evil 4 was to Resident Evil. This rebirth has revitalized an otherwise stagnant game series that few ever expected to see again outside of a collection. While a few die-hard fans will insist this has done nothing but ruin what they originally fell in love with, the majority of us will find exactly what we wanted and more. Capcom has shown us that, sometimes, change is the best medicine one could ever ask for.
