Welcome to the "Values Based Approach" Web portal of the Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies Web site.

I am the Robert and Kathleen Scanlon Chair in Values Based Health Care. This position was generously created by Brian Hehir and Janet Hehir (NHS'75) in memory of Mrs. Hehir's parents.

I would like to introduce you to the principles that drive our teaching, research, and practice.

Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States.  The university is known globally for its deep commitment to social justice.

Within this rich landscape, NHS translates science - using a values based framework - into health outcomes that benefit the public.  Faculty members achieve this through innovative teaching, research, scholarship, and service  - all in an effort to, as the NHS mission, in part, states, "improve the health and well-being of all people."

Our history is rich in this arena.  One of the first lectures delivered at the school at the time of its founding, according to historical documents, was on "The Ethics of Nursing."

Since that time - as our academic offerings have broadened to cover Health Systems Administration, Human Science, International Health, and Nursing - our community has remained committed to understanding our fields as they relate to mission and values.  To read more about the school's and the departments' mission, vision, and values, click here.

Or feel free to contact me to learn more about our work.  I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Laura Anderko, Ph.D., RN
