Bahrain: King Institutes Emergency Law

In response to continued unrest across the country, King Al Khalifa declared a state of emergency for the next 3 months. A statement read on television, “authorized the commander of Bahrain’s defense forces to take all necessary measures to protect the safety of the country and its citizens.” Al Jazeera reports that the city of Manama has effectively been shut down for the past few days amidst major protests. The New York Times reports that two men have been killed amidst the security clamp down. One man, Ahmed Farhan, 24, had dozens of shotgun pellet wounds on his back and a gaping head injury, while a second man had tire marks from having been run over by security forces, the doctors said.
