Current Student Organizations

 

The following student organizations are active as of November 2009:

The Georgetown University Student Government Association in Qatar

The Georgetown University Student Government Association of Qatar (SGA) is a democratic government that provides students with a forum to voice their opinions to the administration and their peers. The Student Government is comprised of an Assembly, with members chosen from each class, and several officers. The student body as a whole elects a President, Vice President, and Public Relations Officer; the Student Government in turn appoints a Secretary and a Treasurer.

The African Society of Georgetown University Qatar

 

Hosts events which highlight African culture.  This club is open to all students who want to draw attention to or learn more about African culture.

Brainfood

Arranges discussions over lunch/dinner between SFS-Q students and people from the academic, political, and private sectors. Past guests have included Georgetown professors, visiting theologians, and the US Ambassador to Qatar.

HOPE Club

In order to advance justice and the common good, the Hoya Hope Club promotes community based research and service projects. The club strives to gain a better understanding of the needs of communities in Qatar. Among other things, these projects include making lunches for workers, and sponsoring a food, clothing and hygienic material drive.

Hoya Blue

Hoya Blue encourages campus community spirit through promoting student athletics.

Hoya English Learning Program (HELP)
HELP is a volunteer outreach program, in which students organize and teach weekly English language courses for Education City workers.  Last year's members taught more than 60 English classes to 180 workers.

International Relations Club
Promotes the study and discussion of international issues. IRC members engage in research and debate, travel to collegiate MUN conferences abroad, and help host a Doha Model United Nations conference for high school students.

Photography and Media Club

 

Brings together student with a passion for photography and creates a forum for the exchange of ideas, improvement of skills and the effectual display of their work.  The Photography Club assisted in the creation of the Jordan Refugee Project Photo exhibition in 2007. In 2009, the club executed photographic shoots at the newly opened Museum of Islamic Art where they took hundreds of shots, followed by a group critiquing session to analyze and fine tune their work

Senior Class Committee

 

The goal of the SCC is to produce a memorable year by exposing seniors to culturally diverse experiences, charitable services, and transitional activities geared towards post-collegiate life.

SFS-Q South Asian Society

 

Dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the South Asian culture. If you would like to join the South Asian Society or receive more information about the club, please contact Ben Shaw.

Theater Club

Tacking all things from theater of the absurd to Monty Python, to Shakespeare, the Theater Club invites any and all to preform, observe, and enjoy all that the club has to offer. In their inaugural performance, the theater club tackled Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. It was a highly respected and difficult work that  was met with great fanfare and success by students, faculty, and staff.
 

Athletics

Creates a sense of community through intramural and recreational sports teams and activities.  There are currently five sports teams:  Hoya Cricket, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Soccer and Women's Soccer teams as well as recreational Volleyball.
