Anne Rice Quits Christianity

Jul 28, 2010 35 Comments by Dan

Anne Rice announced today that she was done with Christianity, Done, KAPUT, all finished! But has she also turned her back on Christ himself?

I have followed Anne Rices career closely over the past twenty years, and I have to say she never fails to impress. I was rather confused when she turned to Christ in the year 2000 and openly stated that she was now Christian. Why would an artist such as Anne Rice, who’s past works conflicted the ideals of Christianity suddenly conform to Christian ideology?

Anne Rice announced in a Newsweek article in 2004 that she would “write only for the Lord.” Following this statement she released a series called Christ the Lord. This change of genre and direction for Anne Rice might have puzzled many, but in my own opinion change of position on personal belief and faith is something that keeps the spirit fresh.

Just today on July 28th 2010 Anne Riceannounced on her Facebook Page

For those who care, and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. “I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being “Christian” or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to “belong” to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten …years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

This to me shows great courage and spirit, standing up for what is right and what Anne Rice sees as her own values. Over the past few months Anne Rice had been berated by some Christians for posting articles that contradicted or questioned traditional and orthodox teachings.

Many of her posts that were in support of Gay Rights or Gender Equality were met with support from a good portion of her fans, but also with contempt for those wishing to troll her page.

The previous post was followed with this;

“As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of …Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.”

So Anne Rice has quit Christianity, but continues to have a personal relationship with Christ. This I completely support. As someone who isn’t Christian, I can completely respect someone who is able to stand up and say that they don’t agree with what some people are saying, but still commit to a personal relationship with their God.

As for another Vampire novel, I would think fans will have to wait to hear if there is another Interview with the Vampirein her. Anne has not written in this genre for some time, and Authors sometimes naturally progress away from things that initially helped them develop a name.

Good Luck Anne, I don’t think it will be as tough as you think and life transitions like this are always tough / interesting. You have your fans support!

After thought: I completely respect peoples personal beliefs and think that standing up for what you believe is right and a noble act. I myself work in a Christian orginization and have many devout friends and I think the ability to accept each other for our diversity is something important.

The scriptures decide what you can and can not support as a Christian and nothing else. It is certainly mrs Rice’s right to do as she pleases. Please remember that not all that claim to be something really are in the first place. We will all be judged by our accepting Jesus Christ as our personal Savior or not . What we do with the conversion afterwards is up to us. The scriptures plainly forbid certain things, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what they are. Without accepting Christ as personal Savior and no other way, forsaking all others , you are not a Christian anyway.

This just goes to show you that the cross has always been and always will be foolishness to the natural mind. Or as Jesus (whom Anne Rice claims to still follow) once said:

“For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
    (Mark 8:38)

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”
    (Revelation 3:15-16)

Only thing that can really be done is to pray that Anne Rice may seriously reconsider what she’s thinking and whether eternity is worth chasing after the values of this passing world rather than those of the Lord. I hope she will repent and come to Christ (the true Christ that is proclaimed in the Bible, not the one she has come up with in her own mind).

After reading a few of your articles I seriously found this one to be wonderful. I’ve got a web log as well and would love to repost a number of snips of your respective articles on my own blog website. Would it be ok if I use this so long as I personal reference your site or generate a inbound link towards the article I took the snip from? Otherwise I recognize and would not do it without having your endorsement . I have book marked this post to twitter and bebo accounts for reference. Anyhow thank you either way!

Sounds to me like she quit being a RIGHT WING Christian and is a liberal Christian at heart. There is such a thing, no matter how loud the conservative right wingers bray about them being the only “real” Christians.

Kudos to her for standing up to those right wingers that are so hateful.
