CBS News Internship Program

Are You Interested In A College Internship At CBS News?

(CBS)  The CBS News Internship Program is an educational program designed for students interested in pursuing a career in Journalism, Broadcasting or Communication.

Please read the following for more information:

Departments:
Students do not choose a show or department. Placement is at the sole discretion of the Coordinator. Each student is selected and assigned on a first‐come, first‐served basis. The number of positions varies for each semester.

    Duties:
    Assignments vary day-to-day. Interns can expect to log tapes, coordinate script, research stories, conduct preliminary interviews, assist during shoots, select footage, perform light clerical duties and assist staff members.

    Requirements:
    Students who are currently attending an accredited college and have achieved junior or senior status are eligible. Students majoring in journalism, broadcasting or communications are preferred; other majors will be considered. Participants must have good computer skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities and knowledge of current events. A 3.0 GPA or above is recommended. Students must be able to meet the minimum time commitment.

    Compensation:
    This is an unpaid internship. Students are required to provide official documentation on school letterhead confirming that they will receive credit for the internship. This documentation must be on file prior to start date.

    Application Status:
    Due to the high volume of applicants, the office cannot respond to application‐status inquiries. The office reviews all submitted applications and contacts qualified candidates for a phone interview.

    Deadlines:
    Fall and spring applicants are accepted on a rolling basis. The summer program selects and assigns students on a first-come, first-served basis; summer applications will not be accepted after Feb. 28 of each year.

    Internship Locations:
    New York, Washington DC
    *Interns are responsible for housing & expenses.

    Sessions:
    SPRING: January to May
    The student arranges exact start and end date

    SUMMER: June to August
    Full time over the course of ten weeks

    FALL: September to December
    The student arranges exact start and end date

    Employment:
    Interns are not guaranteed a job after participating in the program.

    Evening News: (NY & DC)
    This nightly broadcast covers breaking news reports, features and interviews by CBS News correspondents covering events throughout the world. Intern must have strong research skills and must have the ability to work the phone with contacts, sources and affiliates.

    Investigative Unit: (NY & DC)
    This department produces hard‐hitting, in‐depth stories for the Evening News and CBSNews.com. Subjects covered include government waste, homeland security, terrorism, crime, health insurance, medical fraud, etc. Intern must be ambitious, enthusiastic, a self‐starter and a good researcher. Previous newsroom or journalism experience is a plus.

    60 Minutes: (NY & DC)
    A CBS News magazine with investigative reports and features focusing on people and events in the news and behind the headlines. Intern must want to work in news, have strong research skills and knowledge of Lexis‐Nexis.

    48 Hours: (NY)
    A CBS News magazine that goes behind the headlines to investigate-with cutting‐edge style and journalistic integrity-baffling crimes, heartless scams and compelling real‐life dramas. Intern must be organized, efficient with their time and aggressive. Proficiency with Lexis‐Nexis and strong interpersonal skills necessary.


    The Early Show:
    (NY & DC)
    A hard‐news broadcast with breaking news reports and regular feature segments that cover business, consumer affairs, entertainment, home improvement, lifestyle and health. Intern must be organized and have strong interpersonal skills. Computer skills helpful.

    Face the Nation: (DC)
    In this weekly national affairs broadcast, CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer interviews the principal newsmaker(s) of the week. Interns assist with gathering research and videotape and works with producers in the control room on the day of air. Candidates should be well organized, efficient, and have good editorial judgment.

    Newspath: (NY & DC)
    This is the newsgathering and distribution unit for CBS News. Newspath gathers footage, edits and redistributes the video via server to CBS Network, owned stations, affiliates and contracted domestic and overseas clients. This includes national & international news, weather, sports, medicine and health reports, business and consumer news and a broad range of feature stories from around the world. Newspath has several correspondents and produces stories for owned station and affiliate broadcasts. Intern should have strong written and oral communication skills.


    News Productions: (NY)
    The production company within CBS News that creates and distributes a diverse mix of original nonfiction and reality‐style programming for domestic and international markets, including network and cable television, home video, DVD, audio books and in‐flight, as well as schools and libraries. CBS News Productions and CBS Eye Too Productions produce programs across a wide spectrum of genres, from history to science to entertainment. Interns conduct research and do production work. Student must have computer skills & strong interpersonal skills.


    CBS News Marketing: (NY)
    This unit produces television, radio and print promotion for all network news broadcasts. Intern will log and traffic tapes, search CBS News archives system, screen footage, attend staff meetings, assist producers and observe edit sessions. Intern must be interested in television and production.

    Broadcast Marketing: (NY)
    This unit deals with all of the CBS News broadcasts and acts as a liaison between CBS News and all CBS affiliates. An intern assigned to this unit must have a great phone manner and be able to juggle several projects at one time. The ideal candidate must be interested in marketing, production and have some sales ability. Depending on skills, an intern will have an opportunity to learn how to book and produce satellite tours and edit excerpts and promos for affiliate use on our Avid. At the same time the candidate must be a self-starter, patient, capable of handling various clerical assignments and must enjoy being a team player. There is a certain amount of typing, research and photocopying. The Intern should have skills in marketing, enjoy writing and not be adverse to pitching in where needed.


    Evening News Weekend Edition: (NY & DC)
    This broadcast features reports and interviews by CBS News correspondents covering events, trends, and issues around the world. Interns must have a strong self‐motivated desire to be part of that news team and be willing to contribute to the final product. After demonstrating their journalistic talents, interns will be given a chance to co‐produce stories for the broadcast. Common sense is required; strong research and phone skills are necessary.

    Sunday Morning: (NY)
    A broadcast reviewing events of the preceding week, covering the world of fine art, music, nature, sports, science and Americana. Student should be organized, have strong interpersonal skills and should be familiar with the broadcast.

    Radio News: (NY & DC)
    CBS Radio News serves radio stations with hourly newscasts, instant coverage of breaking stories, special reports, updates, features, customized reports and newsfeed material for 500+ affiliates. Millions of Americans rely on CBS Radio News for up‐to‐the‐minute information. Interests in broadcast journalism, especially radio, a must. Intern should be a self‐starter and have a fundamental concept of reporting, news gathering and research.

    Channel One News: (NY)
    Channel One News is a daily newscast seen by 6 million students in high school and middle school. It covers stories from around the world and tackles topics from a teen’s perspective. Intern should have some technical background in shooting and editing, as well as strong research skills. Interns will research, book, log tape, help out on field shoots. Depending on ability, some interns may also do some on camera work, writing, editing and shooting.

    CBS News Press Office: (NY)
    This department handles publicity for CBS News broadcasts including Evening News, 60 Minutes, Face the Nation, Early Show, Sunday Morning and 48 Hours. Intern helps with day-to-day operations, assists with press events, conducts research, drafts announcements/advisories and compiles press clippings and media lists. Candidate should have a strong interest in communications in a fast-paced news environment and must be able to handle confidential information with discretion.

    Crimesider: (NY) The true crime destination website from the producers at 48 Hours Mystery. Interns assist producers in site development, design, and upkeep; pitch story ideas and gain experience in social media in a newsroom setting. Must have good organizational skills, be attentive to detail and accuracy, be actively engaged as a social media user with profiles established on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other social media sites. Knowledge of a photo related program such as Photoshop is a plus.
