What's the Matter with Kansas?
Who Killed Nancy
The whole Icon-releasing-The Tree of Life-on-May-4th-in-England story is out the window and dead in the water, Helen O'Hara!
I've just received a statement from Summit's Jill Jones, senior vp int'l marketing and publicity, saying in effect (i.e, if you interpret the implications of her words with my colorful sensibility) that Icon is a troubled outfit that hasn't paid us so don't listen to them. They're not real, they have no authority or materials in their possession including the film itself, and so they aren't in the game.
Here's Jones' official statement: "The information regarding the May 4th UK release [of The Tree of Life] is incorrect. Icon Film Distribution Ltd. does not have the right to distribute The Tree of Life in the UK, as it is in default of its agreement. The matter is pending before an arbitration tribunal in Los Angeles."
So forget any notion of Terrence Malick 's Penn-Pitt-dinosaur film having a May 4th release in England -- it's not happening. Cannes Film Festival honcho Thierry Fremaux can rest easy and it's back to hey-hey and champagne on the Croisette and the journalistic elites seeing Malick's film first, which is how it should be. Mothers in Leeds who can't afford babysitters and were going to take their kids to a local matinee showing of The Tree of Life on May 4th are shit out of luck.

Go up to search.... type in "Tree of life", "Pitt", "Dinosaurs" and "Social Network"....
Watch your computer start to smoke and then explode into a fireball of plastic, silicon and glass.
Fun for all!
(then head over to MacMall for a new computer)

My prediction: Journalistic elite-member Devin Faraci will think 'The Tree of Life' is better than 'Avatar', but not as good as 'Terminator:Salvation'.

It opens on May 27th in the US and I'll be seeing it then, just like most of the other readers of this column. All this back and forth isn't "navel gazing", just a masturbatory game of gotcha between bloggers trying to one up each other.
By May 28th, nobody will give a crap about release dates and what is now being sold as vital importance will be forgettable trivia...

Not everyone lives in the US, Carl LaFong.
And I'd say It is an interesting situation for those closely following the film.

Cde., that's why I said "most" readers and am aware that HE has overseas readers, too.
And your right; it's unfortunate that the UK audience may now have an uncertain release due to the Icon litigation. That is the relevant story, not the Wells/O'Hara imbroglio that has been fueling these posts for the last couple of days...

Absolutely. I'm a little worried because I live in Australia, where the distributor is...Icon. Hopefully our branch aren't caught up in this fiasco.

Carl LaFong:
What is of vital importance today is called "news."
Questions inside the news stories get answered later and those questions may become forgettable trivia, or they may prove predictive and insightful in ascertaining why something has happened, where something that was missing was needed, where something inessential illogically disturbed or unsettled some other element of the story being covered, negatively affecting the outcome of a creative/business endeavor.
You're absolutely right.
Some people are interested in following news stories, including entertainment business news stories.
Many of those people are in the entertainment industry and they care a great deal about the current commercial and creative situation, the players, companies, market conditions, costs, trends, etc and they get information THEY NEED TO DO THEIR JOBS, creative and business, by reading these news stories.
As Bob Dylan sang:
"Some of us turn off the lights and we live/In the moonlight shooting by/Some of us scare ourselves to death in the dark/To be where the angels fly."
And some of grouse about things we don't appreciate or understand, like old curmudgeons, decades before we become them.

"in view of [the Amazon-exclusive Blu-ray of Barry Lyndon] Wells needs TOL to premiere at Cannes more than ever, otherwise how will he get bragging rights?"
Wells will still need to travel to Cannes to purchase a Blu-ray of Barry Lyndon. He is frightened of online shopping and insists on paying full MSRP or higher in a brick-and-mortar shop. Unfortunately, he likes to take his purchases home in the basket of his Italian-style red bicycle, which he will not likely be taking to with him. I suspect that a jaunty scooter will be rented for transporting the disc along the Croisette instead.

By the way, if the May 4th release signaled a lousy picture, does the recanting make it the greatest story ever told?

Apologies to Helen O'Hara for accidentally deleting her earlier posting during my daily spam cleanout.
The gist of her post was (a) why do I revel in the Summit statement that Icon UK is not a player due to not living up to its distribution agreement with Icon and therefore not in a position to release "The Tree of Life" on May 4th? and (b) a re-statement that her reporting was initially accurate.
Answer/reply: I was revelling in the fun & exhilaration of the game. That was, after all, a very surprising & sudden turnaround, which came just hours after my posting yesterday morning that your initial reporting was indeed accurate as far as it went (i.e., within the time-frame that it was written), and that you deserved an apology. I thought the game was over, and that Icon would in fact be releasing it after all on 5.4, etc., and then wham...it changed again.

I suspect that her objection was to the (quite possibly unintentional) "ha, eat that Helen O'Hara!" vibe of the first paragraph. J E B seems to be trying to top its obnoxiousness.
