Grand Ole Opry Member Mel McDaniel Dies

Grand Ole Opry member Mel McDaniel.

GAC extends condolences to the loved ones of Grand Ole Opry member Mel McDaniel. Mel, 68, passed away earlier tonight after battling cancer.

A native of Checotah, Okla., Mel became an Opry member in 1986. He’s best known for his hits “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On” (1981), “Big Ole Brew” (1982), the No. 1 “Louisiana Saturday Night” (1984) and “Stand Up” (1985).

At the time of his passing, Mel was working on what his website said would be his last studio album, entitled The Last Ride.

Here’s a YouTube clip we found of Mel singing “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On.” Rest in peace, Mel, and thanks for the music.

  1. I met Mel at the Wi. Opry. I had made a raspberry pie the the dinner served between shows. He came looking the the person that had made the “best pie he ever ate”. I still today carry the photo in my wallet of us and autographed “thanks for the pie”
He will be missed by many, but his memory will live on in his music…thanks for the memory.

  2. "Stand Up" was one of the all-time great videos, too, let's not forget! He sang the way country should be sung, before it got "murdered on Music Row." He will be very missed.

  4. I started to listen to Mel McDaniel just recently, and I love "Louisiana Saturday Night" and "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On." When I saw this, I thought, "This was a sad loss. There will never be another talented legend like Mel, just like the rest." Mel just stepped into Honky Tonk Heaven. May he Rest in Peace.

  9. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mel's family and friends. The Grand Ole Opry has lost a wonderful entertainer. Mel will be truly missed by all that have ever had theopportunity to see him in concert. My family and I had that opportunity back in the late 1980's at the Clarion County Fair in PA. He was a great entertainer then and remained that til God called him home. R.I.P. Mel.
