Avnet brings Tech Games back for college students

Date: Wednesday, April 6, 2011, 4:47pm MST

Avnet Inc. will bring together students from the state’s colleges and universities this Saturday to compete in the company’s annual Tech Games.

Phoenix-based Avnet (NYSE: AVT) has been promoting the games for the past six years, hoping to spur the best in technology projects.

This year, 180 students from 14 Arizona two- and four-year colleges will be competing for scholarships in nine unique challenges.

Among the tests that await students are developing a proposal for a green data center, speeding up a personal computer and building a green light-emitting diode lamp.

Winning students will get a $1,000 scholarship, and faculty members will get $200 for leading teams and another $300 if they win.

The event also is a networking opportunity for students, who can meet with companies such as Accenture Plc, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Avnet, Microsoft Corp. and TelTech Networks Inc., all of whom are sponsors.

The event is held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 9, at the University of Advancing Technology, 2625 W. Baseline Road in Tempe.
