Madeleine Albright has written several books since leaving her position as U.S. Secretary of State, including Madam Secretary: A Memoir, Memo to the President: How We Can Restore America's Reputation and Leadership and The Mighty and the Almighty. All topics that focus on her diplomatic work.
Albright's most recent book (as of September, 2009) covers an entirely different topic. Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box gives readers a close look at the brooches that became her jewelry trademark, and were nearly always chosen to convey a message to the people she met with. Albright says:
- Before long, and without intending it, I found that jewelry had become part of my personal diplomatic arsenal. Former president George H. W. Bush had been known for saying "Read my lips." I began urging colleagues and reporters to "Read my pins."
