Walkover terrain: 3 PAP strongholds?

THREE People's Action Party (PAP) strongholds - Ang Mo Kio, Tanjong Pagar and Sembawang GRCs - look unlikely to be contested on May 7.

But if the opposition goes for broke and fields weaker teams there, just for the sake of contesting all Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs), it might actually give a boost to the PAP's national average at the polls.

In the 2006 election, the PAP's Sembawang GRC team led by Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan won handsomely, taking 77 per cent of the valid votes against the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). The win contributed 90,633 votes or 1.8 percentage points to the PAP's overall margin of victory of 66.6 per cent.

Which is why PAP candidates and activists in the three heavyweight GRCs are prepared for, and welcome a contest.
