China Travel Resolutions for 2011

Saturday January 1, 2011

It's darn cold in Shanghai and as we enjoy the last few days of Christmas-New Year's holiday spirit, my traveling mind is off a-wandering. Where will we go this year? What will we do? I decided I'd think about some resolutions and see if I can make them happen. Without further ado, here they are, my Travel China Travel Resolutions for 2011:

  • Try a new local Chinese restaurant in Shanghai every other week. My two best food-friends have vowed to do this together so this one shouldn't be too hard. (It's always better to eat with someone!)
  • Spend a weekend walking the bamboo forests in Moganshan. (This is an easy one. Moganshan mountains are right outside Hangzhou and with the new 40 minute bullet train from Shanghai, there is really no excuse not to.)
  • Leave the resort and check out Sanya city during spring break. (We go down to Hainan Island for a week every spring over the school break - it's the perfect time, not too hot, not too cool. But with kids, it's easy to let each day melt into the other and never leave the resort. Not this year! I resolve to check out the city. There is supposed to be a really great market...)
  • Get down to Yunnan Province and the Linden Centre. Ever since I met Brian Linden earlier this year, we've been trying to figure out a time to head down south and stay at the Centre. I resolve to do it in 2011.
  • Take the overnight train somewhere. There are great overnights - convenient, clean and cheap - to both Xi'an and Beijing. My son would love it and I'd like to have the experience. We're doing it in 2011.

There. I think that is quite a good set - I could try for one every three months. That seems like a doable goal.

Happy New Year and have fun with your Travel Resolutions. Add China as a destination, that should get you started!
