May Honors Tuxedo Cats

Monday April 25, 2011

Tuxedo cats' striking colors: all black, with a white bib and sometimes white boots, have almost become a classic among cat lovers, and "tuxies" are favored worldwide. Here's a profile of tuxedo cat pattern, which describes common characteristics of Tuxedo Cats. Years ago I select Tuxedo Cats for my Cat Pictures of the month, because they reminded me of the elegant tuxes often worn to senior proms, (and girls sometimes wear tuxes too.) Don Pedro, pictured here, looks splendid with his white bib accenting his glossy black coat. Read Don Pedro's story here.

May is just around the corner, and it's not too early to submit your tuxie's photo and story. Even if you've already submitted his/her story last year, you may submit a new picture and story again this year, now or at any other time during the year.

Cat Picture of the Week: Bender

Sunday April 24, 2011

Bender was a very young (cropped ear) feral kitten when Victoria adopted him from a Craig's List ad. The woman advertising had found her dog shaking him violently, and brought him in to care for. Although his condition isn't named in his story (other than cerebral problem), it sounds very much like cerebellar hypoplasia, which (of numerous causes) can be caused by panleukopenia (feline distemper), either in the womb or after birth. It is a miracle that Bender survived at all, and miraculous that Victoria was the one who adopted him. Learn more about Bender, and see other Cats of the Week. All the Cats of the Week for April are chosen from the Special Needs Cats Show and Tell Gallery.

New Cats of the World: Siamese in Japan

Sunday April 24, 2011

I posted a request Thursday to share Cats of the World (excluding North America), and readers have already responded despite its being Easter weekend. The first entry to be published was of these stunning Siamese cats, who share their home with Lisa in Chiba Prefetcure, Japan, which is located in the Greater Tokyo area. Lisa tells us that many apartments and rentals do not allow cats, and that many local governments advise keeping cats inside the house, and some cities limit the number of pets. See more photos and the rest of the Japanese cats' story.

Readers Share Cats of the World

Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com Guide to Painting, and her husband, Alistair Boddy-Evans, Guide to African History, moved with their six cats from South Africa to the U.K. in 2008. The Boddy-Evans cats are truly cats of the world. Pictured here are Ghost and Buffy, home at last.

Though cats in different countries have different life styles, in part because of different climates, the one thing cats of the world all have in common is that they universally love - and are loved by their humans. We honor cats of the world here, to embrace both their differences and their similarities.

If you and your cat live outside North America, we welcome your story about your cat and his or her photos. Be the first to share your cat(s) of the world with other readers with this new Show and Tell Gallery.
