Famous and most honorable “fascists” that the Jews have smeared include the honorable Christians, General Francisco Franco; Tzar Nicholas II; and more recently, former Presidential candidate, Pat Buchanan, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. 1a) “Fascism.” The political status of a particular nation that keeps the Jews in their place and out of power. 2) “Anti Semite.” Jews, such as the racist Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Christian Anti Defamation League, call someone an Anti Semite when that person publicly exposes the agenda, lies, and crimes of the Jews. The Jews become especially enraged when the exposure includes facts such as specific names, dates, documents, locations, quotations, and circumstances. When this occurs the Jews call the person a “Nazi.” ~ Famous and most honorable “Anti Semites” that the Jews have smeared include the honorable Christians, Charles Lindberg and Henry Ford I. Most recently, the authors, John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, who wrote the best seller, The Israel Lobby, have been labeled by the Jews as “Anti Semites.” 3) “Schwartzas.”/”Shooks.” Jews call blacks “shwartzas” and “shooks” because as Maimonides their rabbi teaches them, (in his own words), “The nature of the blacks is like the mute animals. Their level among existing things is below that of a man and above that of a monkey.†(Maimonides, Guide To The Perplexed, Hebrew Version) 4) “Shiksa.” Jews call white Christian women shiksas. This is a derogatory term derived from the Hebrew word, “sheygetz” which means a “blemished and unclean animal.” The Talmud teaches that committing fornication with a “shiksa” is a “sin of bestiality” rather than a sin of adultery. This is because the Talmud teaches that the white Gentile Christian woman is an “unclean animal.” (Talmud, Tractate Berakhot). 5) “Happy Holidays!” The Jews wish to eradicate the Name of “Christ” from off the face of the earth. Thus The Lewer Company which owns Hallmark Cards and Papercraft, owned by the Katz family, began printing the Jewish phrase, “Happy Holidays!” on their Greeting cards in the late 1950’s. 6) “Righteous Gentile.” Jews call white Gentile Christians “righteous Gentiles” when they advance the agenda, lies, and crimes of the Jews. The famous Hollywood Jew movie director, Steven Spielberg, popularized this Jewish phrase, “righteous Gentile,” in his Jewish propaganda film, Schindler’s List. ~ “Righteous Gentiles” who promoted Jewish lies and crimes include Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and most recently, President George Bush Jr. ~ Jews of the Jewish-controlled media oppose the true Biblical meaning of the term, “righteous Gentile.” The New Testament, which the Jews hate, teaches that a true “righteous Gentile” is one who embraces Jesus Christ the Messiah and keeps His commandments. THERE IS NO WAY THAT USA AND ISRAEL COULD HOPE TO CONQUER IRAN http://living-in-usa-makes-us-fat.blogspot.com/2008/04/there-is-no-way-us-could-hope-to.html There is no way that the USA and Israel could hope to conquer Iran. Nor would the Iranian pe...ople rise up and overthrow their theocratic leaders--the same neoconservative fantasy that Bush war-mongers promised ahead of the Iraq invasion, and which they are re-cycling now to justify an attack on Iran. In fact, an attack on Iran, far from sparking a rebellion against the government there, would crush the new wave of reform that was evidenced in last week's local elections in Iran, which dealt a blow to the country's hardliners. Iran is a proud nation with a history reaching back thousands of years. If attacked, its people can be counted on to rally around their current rulers, and its war-hardened soldiers can be counted on to fight to the death to defend their country. Moreover, while its military may be no match for America's, Iran has many asymmetrical options for retaliation. As the key player in Iraq, with close links to Iraq's Shia factions, Iran's military has trained and armed the Badr Brigades--the largest and best-armed faction in Iraq, and one which to date has stayed out of the fighting against US forces. Iran is also close to the Mahdi Army of Moqtada al Sadr, and could unleash his fanatical troops too, against US forces in Iraq. If this happens, count on American casualty rates leaping to or even surpassing Korea or Vietnam-era levels overnight. Additionally, Iran's intelligence services have connections with Shia groups in Saudi Arabia and other oil-producing countries, and can be expected to quickly organize cells to strike at economic and US military targets there.More seriously, of course, an attack on Iran will jack the price of oil to levels never seen before. Even if the US managed to militarily control the Straits of Hormuz, Iran's hundreds of stockpiled anti-ship missiles, which are buried in bunkers all along the Persian Gulf, would cause insurance rates to soar so high that no tanker could afford to sail that route, effectively cutting off over one quarter of the world's oil supply. Virtually all of the oil produced in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait and the Arab Emirates would be trapped in the ground. As well, the network of pipelines that bring oil from wellheads to refineries and to storage and pier facilities would be virtually indefensible against Iran-inspired sapper attacks. Oil industry analysts have talked of oil leaping in price to $200 a barrel or more in the event of a US war with Iran, and given how panicked this country got when oil reached $80 a barrel recently, there's no need to go into detail explaining what $200/barrel oil would do to the U.S. economy--or to the global economy. Of course, the biggest issue is that attacking Iran would be yet another war crime by this craven administration. No one can argue that Iran poses an imminent threat to anyone, least of all to the U.S.--the only legitimate grounds under the U.N. Charter and the Nuremburg Charter, to which the U.S. is a signatory, for initiating a war. Attacking a country that poses no such threat is defined as the most heinous of war crimes: a Crime Against Peace. If Obama and Joe Biden perpetrate this crime, the Congress should initiate immediate impeachment proceedings and should simultaneously pass legislation terminating funding for the war. The important thing now is for the American people to register their opposition to this war before it happens. Call your senators and your representative and let them know you don't want it to happen, and you want impeachment if it does. And add your name to the petition against war. Finally, send this story to everyone you know, and urge them to do the same. At this point, with Democrats still cowering in their offices, only the American people can stop this madness. .Read more

AFGHANISTAN HAS 2 OPTIONS: SOCIALISM OR BARBARISM !! Written by Lal Khan in Lahore Tuesday, 13 October 2009 http://www.marxist.com/afghanistans-destiny-socialism-or-barbarism.htm# The US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan are fighting an unwinnable ...war. This fact is seeping into the consciousness of millions of people in the west who are now opposed to the war. But also in Afghanistan there are signs that the ordinary people are tired of both the imperialist occupation forces and the Taliban. The only alternative to the present barbarism is the struggle for a socialist federation of South Asia, which would include a socialist Afghanistan. For innumerable generations the masses of this landlocked country, known to the world as Afghanistan, have suffered terribly. Insurgencies, wars and proxy wars, invasions and occupations have brought havoc for the masses. And yet there have been periods of relative stability, progressive developments and high levels of cultural standards. At times the arts, culture, architecture, music and social liberation of women were envied by the populace of the adjoining regions. In the 1970s Kabul was known as the Paris of the Orient. The ruins of the city are a painful memory of those blissful times. Unfortunately, apart for these short periods of growth and development, turmoil, turbulence, violence and bloodshed have been the dominant features of Afghanistan’s chequered history. But the post 2001 invasion of US and NATO forces has brought death and devastation on a scale unprecedented even by Afghan standards. Yet eight years on; this invasion has not achieved any of its proclaimed goals. The boasts of democracy, human rights, modernity, liberation of women, freedom, development etc are no less than an insult upon injury for the masses inhabiting this unfortunate land. The imperialist imposed democracy is a tragedy and a farce at the same time. Hamid Karzai, installed after the invasion by the US viceroy to the region Zalme Khalilzad, has proved to be one of the worst stooges ever imposed by imperialism in a backward country. The paradox is that he was not a favourite of the US strategists in the White House and the Pentagon in these latest elections. Yet he was able to rig the elections right under their noses, against their will, through a beleaguered, dithering and extremely corrupt state apparatus. In the turbulent south and eastern Afghanistan, mainly inhabited by ethnic Pushtoons, in a large number of ballot boxes there was unanimity of votes for just one out of 36 candidates listed on the ballot papers and of course that candidate was Hamid Karzai. His explanation was straight and simple “A bit of fraud is inevitable in any young democracy, but Afghanistan is a tribal society where people vote collectively, it is not odd for everybody in a district to vote for me”. (The Economist, 12 September, 2009) However, the real reason was to be found in the threat of the Taliban against those who dared to vote. This had forced such a low turnout that the corrupt officials had all the time in the world for ballot stuffing to create these unbelievable results. During the election process in more than 700 polling stations for women there was no balloting as the female officials refused to conduct the poll due to threats to their security. In Kandahar two women had their fingers cut off by the Taliban as they had marks of voting ink on them. The role of the imperialists was even more pathetic. According to The Economist, ‘In even a half perfect world the natural response to a cheated election would be to hold another one – indeed, America at first urged Mr. Karzai to re-rig the ballot so that he would win less than 50% and could thus at least hold a fairer second round. Sadly Afghanistan is a long way from even a half-perfect world; it is not even Iran. Another round would be expensive, dangerous and divisive… nobody has a decent census of the country. In practice then the west, alas, has little alternative other than to try to make Mr. Karzai a better ruler…” (The Economist, September 12, 2009) What a rare and stark confession on the part of one of the most influential policymakers of world capitalism. This political and policy defeat is reflected even more stubbornly in the military aggression that is facing an ever more subtle resistance against it. Karzai’s government is infested with drug barons and warlords. Even his own brother Ahmed Wali Karzai was accused by General Musharraf of running one of the largest drug cartels. According to the US investigators he has extensive links to the opium trade. He was to be tried in the US but the state prevailed and the media hushed up the whole case. One of the warlords that Karzai brought to fracture the Northern Alliance of his main rival and ex foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah, was General Qasim Fahim. He was a former defence minister and a notorious warlord involved in crimes like drug trafficking, kidnapping, ransom and genocide. Biblical poverty stalks the land. The vast majority of the oppressed Afghans are being subjected to ferocious bombings, so-called “collateral damage”, extortion and death meted out by the Islamic fundamentalists, poverty, misery, disease, lack of education and other basic amenities at which the tiny elite rejoices. These stooges of imperialism live lavish lifestyles in fancy new villas in Kabul and other cities. The imperialists have pounded Afghanistan with bombs artillery shells, rockets and modern weaponry costing more than 10 times the aid promised at the Bonn Conference for the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan. This large-scale use of weapons of mass destruction has conveniently saved the US government from having to dole out any bailouts for the Military Industrial Complex. Paradoxically the military corporate mercenary firms like Halliburton, Black Water and others are brimming with high rates of profitability. Although the Pakistan Army was involved in the Afghan imbroglio since the beginning of the reactionary insurgency, now this conflict has spiralled into Pakistan itself. Again the imperialist ordinance and war contracting firms have expanded their businesses in large areas of Pakistan. In the last sixty years, apart from the few early years of the 1970s, Pakistan has been a satellite state of US imperialism and n the imperialists have dragged it into this atrocious war, making Pakistan more unstable and pushing onto the brink of a conflagration. The semblance of sovereignty has been obliterated after the advent of this new PPP-led democratic regime. It is more of an American colony now than it was at the times of the Raj. The upholders of Pakistani statehood and nationalism are in a dire state. One of the most prominent representatives of the establishment, the former chief of the ISI and a main architect of its Afghan policy, Lt. General Asad Durrani, in an article titled “Occupying hearts and minds” writes, “Afghans do not take too kindly to the presence of foreign forces in their country, but Pakistanis have traditionally been more hospitable. The elites, always game for a deal, can be relied upon even to sell their soul to the devil… The stage seems set for the ultimate melee for Pakistan’s remains. While the parasites within are bleeding it dry, it is inevitable that the vultures without would be raring to feast on its carcass. Some of us might have no stomach for this scrap, but what if there were still people around with guts to fight back.” In spite of the fact that NATO “anti-terror” war effort is being intensified, the outcome for this imperialist aggression looks more and more bleak. The only thing positive for the capitalists reminds us of Lenin’s idiom “War is terribly profitable”. Conditions are deteriorating rapidly on the ground. According to most optimistic estimates, illiteracy is still above 70% in Afghanistan. For women it is far worse. On the other hand Obama’s doctrine of building a viable “Afghan” army is a non-starter. Building a 400,000 strong army would be arduous to say the least. Apart from everything else, the annual cost would be more than 300 percent of the country’s GDP. Most British Generals have a very pessimistic opinion on this war. They have a much better historical and traditional acquaintance with the situation here. The imperialists and the regime in Islamabad have in fact failed to sever the links between sections of the ISI and the Taliban. The US and European strategists are not very optimist either. According to the report of the new US commander in Afghanistan, General McCrystal, leaked to the Washington Post, “The situation in Afghanistan is getting from bad to worse; the Taliban insurgency is resilient and growing; Afghans are experiencing a crisis of confidence and they trust neither the Karzai regime nor the NATO forces… The US effort faces failure in Afghanistan without an urgent infusion of troops…” (Quoted in The News, Islamabad, 26 September, 2009). However, Obama, as on other policy issues, is wavering and becoming more and more reluctant to send even more troops to this graveyard of Empires. The Washington Post summed up the situation deftly: “Obama can send more troops and it will hit a disaster and he will destroy the Democratic Party. Or he can send no more troops and it will be a disaster and the republicans will say he lost the war.” There is also an increasing resentment toward the war in Afghanistan within the US and other NATO countries. The Time magazine survey reveals that 59 percent of Americans who doubt the war in Afghanistan will be successful. The numbers against this war are even higher in Europe. Even The Economist laments, “Will the voters in the West agree to sink more blood and treasure in the Hindukush?” (September 5, 2009). Now the Taliban are opening new fronts in the Northern regions like Kunduz, stretching the NATO forces even more. It was in the plains around Kunduz that the Taliban surrendered in late 2001. On polling day rockets were fired into the city for the first time since 2001. Neighbouring Baghlan saw the worst bloodshed of any province. The Economist goes further, “And in the North, a region where securities have long been taken for granted, Taliban advances are rattling foreign forces.” (ibid). In the coming months the mass movement against the war in the USA and Europe can surge to the level of the Vietnam War days. The impending defeat in Afghanistan at the hands of antediluvian warrior monks is another example, after Vietnam, of history’s retribution for a one time superpower. Some US strategists are hyping up the “need” to have a dialogue with the Taliban, in the face of an approaching defeat. They are trying to buy, rent or hire the warlords which mostly end up in an even greater setback. The Taliban have a better funding mechanism, mainly through the drugs trade which now finances more than 70% of the costs of their insurgency. This was the method the CIA had taught them in financing the reactionary insurgency against the left-wing PDPA government in the first place. In the nineteenth century, the British colonialists had installed their protégé Shah Shujah as the ruler of Afghanistan. The British envoy William McNaughton pulled the strings of this puppet king according to instructions from Buckingham Palace. Within less than two years, on December 24, 1841 McNaughton was captured and murdered, his headless, limbless body later appearing in the main bazaar of Kabul for public display. Shah Shujah was quick to claim credit for the British route. Today’s Karzai is only more corrupt, arrogant, cunning and weak. The British imperialists had devised other measures to defeat the local armed resistance. This included the Durand line treaty of 1893, apparently negotiated with the Afghan ruler King Amir Abdul Rehman and Lord Curzon the British viceroy to India. This was a border line drawn on the maps which was meant to divide a Pushtoon people with the same language, history, culture and traditions. It still exists today as an artificial imperialist device to perpetuate the method of “divide and rule”. In reality it has never been accepted by the majority of Pushtoons on both sides of the divide. Czarist Russia, the British colonizers and the US imperialists played out the Great Game to control this strategic country from a military and economic point of view. Most Afghan warlords and tribal leaders were mere stooges. Some who tried to defy were removed through proxy wars. However, in the last century the most significant event was the overthrow of the Monarchy and subsequently the Afghan bourgeois regime of Daoud in 1978. This was carried through in what is known as the “Saur” or the Spring Revolution of April 27, 1978. This revolution took place in form of a bloody military coup. Obviously it was not a classical Marxist or a Bolshevik Revolution. It was mainly triggered by the assassination of Mir Ali Akbar Khyber the leader of the Parcham faction of the PDPA, People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (the Afghan Communist Party). A demonstration of 10,000 in Kabul against this assassination had shaken the weak bourgeois Bonapartist regime of Mohammad Daoud who was desperate and was planning to assassinate most of the PDPA leaders incarcerated in the notorious Pul-i-Charkhi prison near Kabul. These included the leaders of both the Khalq and Parcham factions of the PDPA. However, the main officers who led the assault on the prison, and struck the Presidential Palace with MIG fighters, belonged mainly to the “Khalq” (people’s) faction. The plan of the coup was drawn up on the spur of the moment as Daoud was going for the massacre of the left leadership. But the plans were kept secret from the Parchamites because of their close relationship with Stalinist Moscow. At the time Daoud had excellent relation with Moscow and was receiving most of his aid from them. Daoud was also in liaison with the Americans and was extracting substantial aid from them also. He was playing his own great game. The armed corps tanks led by General Qadir Aashna bombarded the walls of the Charkhi prison and the left-wing officers were able to free their comrades and leaders including Noor Muhammad Tarakai, who was the leader of the Khalq faction. Meanwhile Daoud was killed in an air raid on the palace. The new left PDPA government was installed and there were jubilations, especially amongst the students and intelligentsia in Kabul and some other cities in Afghanistan. President Tarakai introduced some of the most radical measures ever in the history of Afghanistan. These included a total ban on the sale of women and usury, massive land reforms, reforms in health and education and the expropriation of whatever private or foreign capital was in Afghanistan. The interesting aspect of this revolution was that the Khalqites had ensured that the Stalinist bureaucracy in Moscow should remain ignorant about its planning and execution. In one of his rare, and even more rarely available, works Tarakai had written, “In the third world the Russian support of the liberation movements and revolutions end up not in the liberation but the imposition of the agenda of the interests of Soviet bureaucracy”. (Quoted by Hameed Sherazmel in Class Struggle, September 15, 2009). In an interview with The Dawn (Karachi) after the Geneva agreement, Gennady Grassimov, the chief political advisor to Michael Gorbachev, had clearly said that at the time of the 1978 “coup” the Soviet Ambassador in Kabul and the Kremlin “neither had information or knowledge, nor did it permit or support the act.” But the measures taken by the Tarakai government sent shockwaves through US imperialism and their stooges in the region. The clergy and the Mullahs were outrageous. Their hold of landed estates and other privileges based on obscurantism were being threatened. The US imperialists considered it a huge strategic setback. Hence the CIA launched its biggest ever covert operation in the form of a Jihad (an insurgency based on religious bigotry) in Afghanistan. Initially Saudi money was used and the main executioner of this Jihad was the ISI [Pakistani Secrete Services]. The leadership of the PDPA, that had split and reunited before in the 1960s, were bewildered by the economic, social and military avalanche of attacks on the new regime. Their training in Stalinist Russia had inculcated “nationalism” on the lines of the Stalinist theory of socialism in one country. The more pressure they faced the more they capitulated to nationalist pressures. The Pushtoons, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras and other national traits became more dominant in the Central Committee than Lenin’s proletarian internationalism. All this brought friction within the regime itself. Instead of opting for an internationalist approach, strategy and methods they veered into so-called “indigenous” cultures and traditions, which mainly represent the past rather than the future. This led to bloody infighting with the assassination of Tarakai in September 1979. This brought another Khalqite, Hafeezullah Amin to power. Read more

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. And he has appealed to President Barack Obama to hold a new investigation into the attacks on the World Trade Centre towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC. Sheen, the highest-paid actor on U.S. TV, argues that ‘the official 9/11 story is a fraud’ and says the commission set up to investigate was a whitewash. He claims the attacks simply served ‘as the pretext for the systematic dismantling of our Constitution and Bill of Rights’. The actor, 44, says the administration of former president George Bush was behind the attacks, which they were then able to use to justify an invasion of Iraq. He even hints that Osama Bin Laden was working with the CIA up until 9/11. Sheen, who appears in the hit comedy series Two And A Half Men, made his claims in the transcript of a fictional encounter with Mr Obama, called Twenty Minutes With The President. It was published on the website of radio show host Alex Jones, PrisonPlanet.com, two days ahead of Sheen’s appearance on Jones’s show today. Most of his observations make up the basis of all the conspiracy theories surrounding the terror attack. Those who support the theories in the U.S. are known as Truthers. He voices doubts over whether the planes really were passenger jets and questions how passports identifying the hijackers survived the infernos. The actor, whose father Martin played the president in The West Wing, said he hoped the work would be seen by Mr Obama. He urged other Americans who were sceptical of the investigation into the attacks to demand the truth. He said: ‘We cannot allow governments to continue to advance their political agendas by exploiting forged pretexts and the fact that big budget hit pieces against 9/11 truth are still being rolled out proves that the establishment is upset that the population is waking up to false flag terror.’ Sheen first questioned the events of 9/11 in 2006 when he said: ‘It seems to me like 19 amateurs with box cutters taking over four commercial airliners and hitting 75 per cent of their targets, that feels like a conspiracy theory. Includes cited evidence for, as well as projected ramifications of, the doctrine's acceptance. It is hoped that this paper will lead to additional understanding of the concept of the Eternal Recurrence in the philosophical community. Throughout history, answers have been sought to fundamental questions about what it means to exist in the universe. For every answer found, however, two new questions arise. Nowhere is this more true than in the study of the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, and even more particularly, in his Doctrine of the Eternal Recurrence. Aphorism 341 in The Gay Science is one of the first occurrences of the Doctrine, and is thus one of the best place to begin trying to make sense of this complex idea. Nietzsche's varied use of the concept, especially in latter works, indicates the possibility of interpreting the doctrine in two different ways. The first possibility is that, if Nietzsche is correct, time somehow repeats itself in the reality that is the universe. The second way that Nietzsche may have intended this is as a philosophical outlook or psychological tool to be used by individuals in their lives. It is unclear exactly how Nietzsche intended this concept to be understood, so an examination of the two different possibilities is required to gain a better understanding of the Doctrine of the Eternal Recurrence. The first possibility is that Nietzsche was making an actual claim about the metaphysical nature of the universe in regards to its temporal structure. This conception of the Eternal Recurrence suggests that time is actually a circular phenomenon that repeats itself after a fixed period has past. This is a drastic claim that is not readily supportable by human everyday experience, and thus is difficult to assert with any strength or certainty. It is important to note, however, that even though everyday experience does not directly support this conception of time, there is nothing that contradicts it either. Our rational consciousness experiences the passing of time as a linear progression of events that can only happen in a fixed way because of the relationship of cause and effect. We perceive that anything that occurs has a full and adequate cause in the "past" which brings about the current effect. [1] The perception of this causal-chain is why the consciousness formulates a linear conception of time. Because human experience takes place within the framework of time, however, humans are afforded only a partial perception of what is actually occurring, and so the outside, objective structure may in fact be something entirely different, while maintaining a linear appearance to us. This shows that time may indeed function differently then it appears, but the question remains of how Nietzsche is proposing that it functions. In analyzing the Doctrine of the Eternal Recurrence as a temporal structure, one of Nietzsche's passages that stands out is where the demon decrees, "The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again, and you with it, speck of dust!". There are several different ways to interpret this. The first possibility is that time does progress as an objective, and comprehensive, line which originates at a fixed point and ends at another fixed point, then loops itself over again. This would require some external force or power to be responsible for the assigning of each start and end point, such as a god or other deity, or perhaps even the "Cartesian demon". This power would then assign a "beginning" of time, and an "end" of time, and everything in between would be the content of the experiential timeline or "hourglass" that would then repeat once the end was reached. Nietzsche's general stance on gods and other external forces, however, would seem to suggest that this is not the conception that he had in mind. Indeed, one of the advantages that Nietzsche finds in the doctrine is that it removes the need for an Aristotelian "unmoved mover" to create a beginning of time. The next set of possibilities includes a certain degree of subjectivity. For example, it is conceivable that the time line depends upon a human consciousness to experience it in order for it to operate. This would mean that time is simply a phenomena experienced within the mind of a human, and thus a logical "loop point" would be for time to progress from someone's birth to their death and then begin again. This would be a logical possibility, but according to section 341 in The Gay Science, Nietzsche labels the arbitrary moment of the demons arrival as the end loop point. For all purposes, however, this moment would function as the persons "death" because it would be the moment from which no new experiencing would occur. Once this point is reached, the subject would then begin experiencing everything again from their birth in the same order, or in other words, begin their life over again. It would make sense in this framework for everything to repeat itself in exactly the same way because every choice or action that the person made in her life was motivated in close connection to the external occurrences in the world. If the exact same conditions are in place, as they presumably would be, then the subject will take the same actions again every time. The one thing that might interfere with this exact reoccurrence would be if the subject maintained knowledge of her previous "trip" through the time line. If the subject was aware of what happened as a result of each action and had the ability to make a different choice upon its repetition, it would seem likely that she would attempt to make changes for the sake of "improving" her experience of life. Given the complex and chaotic nature of the universe, a very small change at one stage in a system will have exponential effects farther along in the system. For the purposes of the Eternal Recurrence as a metaphysical structure of time, however, this cannot be the case because, as Nietzsche specifies, "There will be nothing new in it...and everything...in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence." (341, The Gay Science) Nietzsche further explains this in Thus Spoke Zarathustra when he says, "The will cannot will backwards; and that he cannot break time and time's covetousness, that is the will's loneliest melancholy." (p. 251, The Portable Nietzsche) If the subject maintained knowledge of her experience and were able to change things upon repeating her life, things would not progress in the same manner and thus would not be reoccurring, which contradicts the very idea of the doctrine. Another problem encountered in this particular view is whether time can only exist for one person in the entire universe. Again, there are two different possibilities, one is that there truly is only one person in the universe, which any one person can hypothesize about oneself. If one considers the possibility that this entire "reality" is simply one's dream, then there is no problem with a conception of time consisting entirely of one's own experiences, and thus repeating only for the self. [2] If, however, there truly are multiple conscious entities in the universe, the idea of the Eternal Recurrence requires a breaking away from the traditional conception of time as a linear, four-dimensional matrix. As the time line progresses there must be points, namely where each subjects recurrence occurs, where a new time line breaks off from the ongoing time line and loops back on itself. Please see figure 1.1 below for an illustration of this possible time line. Figure 1.1 The time line progresses, but loops back on itself for each subject. While this may seem outlandish, modern physicists have been formulating theories that would accommodate a time line as illustrated above. Albert Einstein's groundbreaking work with Relativity showed that time as a straight, consistent linear concept is insufficient to support what actually occurs in the universe, and Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time served to revolutionize humanities understanding of the universe and its temporal structure. These works laid the foundation for a more innovative formulating of temporal theories. Julian Barbour proposes a conception of time as a collection of eternal instants that are perceived by consciousness as a linear progression from one moment to the next in his book The End of Time. Under this conception, every moment of time is, in itself, an eternal and existent universe that people's consciousness' "visit" one at a time. Under this framework, every conceivable moment would eternally exist and could easily be revisited by one consciousness at a latter point in that subject's experiencing of time. This would make it possible for multiple subjects to return and re-experience the linear progression of their experiences, independent of each other, without any effect on the overall temporal matrix of the universe. These temporal theories draw heavily on modern scientific movements such as quantum mechanics and astrophysics, which where not developed until long after Nietzsche's death, but appear to offer the best and strongest conception of the Doctrine of the Eternal Recurrence as a structure of time. Whether Nietzsche had a conception of the universe similar to this far in advance of the modern movement is not discernible, but given his groundbreaking thought in many other areas, would seem to be a possibility. Even with this possibility in mind, making the Doctrine internally consistent as a temporal structure requires a tremendous amount of speculating about and "restructuring" the physical universe. These speculations may be true in actuality, and indeed, there is increasing evidence for such an abstract view of time, but the other possible interpretation of Nietzsche's meaning behind the doctrine, as a "test" or psychological decision-making mechanism, requires less accommodation to function. The possibility that Nietzsche intended the Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence to function purely as a mental apparatus for use by humans, and especially by the overmen, appears to be the most accurate interpretation of aphorism 341. Within the framework of Nietzsche's philosophy, there are numerous advantages to one's adopting the doctrine as an internal perceiving of the world and of oneself. In usual Nietzschean form though, these advantages do not come without a price. The title of aphorism 341, The Greatest Weight, or Greatest Stress, suggests that the Eternal Recurrence is the single most profound obstacle that one has to overcome, or at least deal with, to live well. Nietzsche's tone makes it clear that it is a sure sign of weakness to be one of the ones who "throw themselves down and gnash their teeth". Presumably, these people are generally the individuals and groups that Nietzsche attacks in his various works. His repeated attacks on Christianity as failing to treat this life as an end in itself would suggest that he views the possessors of beliefs in an afterlife as individuals who would "throw themselves down" if they learned that all of their "moral inhibiting" amounted to nothing other then lost chances and a boring life that they are doomed to repeat. Many people believe that in order for life to be worth living, there must be an overarching purpose to existence, and thus, according to Nietzsche, form illusions for the sake of their comfort. By believing in a morality, God, or other higher cause, people get to live their dream that there is ultimate justification for everything. This serves to allow the imposition of an illusion so that one does not have to view the "truth" of the universe. One of these "truths" that Nietzsche proposes people deny is the "death of God". Nietzsche's statement that "God is dead" is intended to imply that there is a more accurate manner of existing now than following traditional doctrine dogmatically simply because it is tradition. Nietzsche believes that the time has passed when mankind "needed" the conception of God and the accompanying moralities, and that a new existence is coming into being. This new way of life is in accords with what he terms the way of the overman, who has no need of a god, and lives life fully, strongly, and without appealing to outside notions. With God's death, Nietzsche proposes that "we must become gods ourselves" in order to be "worthy of this greatest of all deeds". (Aphorism 125, Gay Science) This serves to demand a transformation of the self to be a more powerful, more aware, and more active participant in life, which the Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence is designed to help achieve and maintain. Nietzsche says that with the death of God, a new sea of possibility has opened before us. This rests on the observation that there have always been many options that man would not let himself consider or experience, and with the removal of the conception of God, these options are now possible. Additionally, each of these options begets new experiences and new growth, and thus new possibilities. Nietzsche heralds the death of God as the most profound event that has ever occurred, and once we fully actualize the ramifications of this "highest" of events, a massive exponential growth of possibility and experience will become mans "playground". Nietzsche accuses the traditions of both Platonism and Christianity as failing to embrace life as a thing of beauty in its own right. Both believe something is misunderstood, incomplete, or wrong in this reality and therefore view things in a negative light. Socrates is claimed to have said on his death-bed that he "owes the Gods a sacrifice for curing him of life.' One has to ask what good this kind of a view is to whoever holds it. Obviously, everyone who is alive has to endure life up until the time that death occurs, so given its inevitability, one has a choice to either hate and resent every moment of it, or one can chose to embrace all it is and all it is not as equally beautiful. It is this path that the Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence steers us towards. The Eternal Recurrence would be viewed as a wonderful thing by someone who had adopted Nietzsche's philosophy and were progressing towards the state of the overman. This type of person would have taken on a certain characteristic view of life, which Nietzsche repeatedly advocates as being the "way of the strong". This view accepts that this world is not in accordance with an eternal, higher perfection, and does not judge this as a bad thing. Nietzsche proposes that no action can be objectively judged as being better than another, as illustrated in Beyond Good and Evil. It is an acceptance of the way things are, and through this, an empowerment. Along these lines, the restraining of impulses in the name of a higher truth is unsound. The "strong" man recognizes the changing and indeterminate nature of all things, and lives accordingly. He indulges himself in his desires, passions, and impulses without question, choosing to live life to its fullest instead of restraining and assuming there will eventually be a pay off. In this manner, the boundaries between "what is" and "what should be" fall away for him. This leads to an "intoxication" of the individual with life itself. [3] This intoxication is best understood by the acknowledgment of the aesthetic view that every experience and moment in time is a work of art in itself, and is thus self-justifying. Through an aesthetic appreciation of the world, the viewer finds sufficient "meaning" in everything without having to appeal to a higher cause or end result. Because of this, it is easy to see Nietzsche's view that pain in life is beautiful as well as pleasure. Instead of viewing only certain things that happen to be in alignment with the perceived higher order as good or beautiful, Nietzsche advocates that everything that comes to pass is complete, and beautiful in itself. This is the same view Nietzsche has on life in general, claiming that one should just accept life for what it is and enjoy its subtle nuances and changes in their entirety, without getting distracted by searching for a higher purpose to which everything must conform. With this view truly internalized, an individual would "jump in joy" at being told that she would eternally be repeating everything in her life. It now becomes apparent that Nietzsche's Doctrine of the Eternal Recurrence can be employed by an individual at various points in one's life to ascertain how closely one has been following the path of true strength. The path of the overman is a difficult one, and thus it is easy for someone to lose sight of what is going on in their complex interactions with the external world. It is very plausible for someone to be living her life believing that she is truly "seizing the moment" and enjoying what life has to offer, but then find that, upon reflecting on the Eternal Return, she would most likely "gnash her teeth" in despair at learning that she will be eternally repeating her life. In this manner, the Eternal Recurrence can be used as a tool to analyze the past, and if this analysis returns a "favorable" result, it serves to redeem the past by imposing a positive, "aesthetic" evaluation, which Nietzsche maintains is the only way value can truthfully be assigned. If the analysis returns a negative result, this would imply that there are lessons to be learned, and is an indication to the individual that they need to make adjustments in their manner of perceiving things. Perhaps more usefully, however, the Doctrine offers the user a helpful decision-making apparatus. With the "sea of possibilities" open to mankind in everyday choices, it serves a beneficial role to analyze every choice that one confronts from the perspective of selecting the alternative that would best be repeated eternally. "The question in each and every thing, "Do you desire this once more and innumerable times more?' would lie upon your actions as the greatest weight.", Nietzsche says. If someone constantly performed this questioning, the only alternative to despair would be to become "well disposed to yourself and to life, to crave nothing more fervently than this ultimate eternal confirmation and seal." (Aphorism 341, Gay Science) This questioning then makes the Doctrine forward reaching since someone in this mindset would make it a point to enjoy himself and his life more, and will therefore get more out of it. If an individual operates in this mindset, even if the actual Eternal Recurrence does not occur, they will still have lived life as fully as is possible. If a reconciliation of the many possible meanings of the Eternal Recurrence is to be reached, it must be noted that Nietzsche is forced to employ words and concepts such as truth or correctness for the purpose of conveying his message, but yet, these are exactly the concepts that he wants to move beyond. Before the Eternal Recurrence can be understood and appreciated, the "will to truth" must be overcome, and mankind must move beyond its narrow confines. Scholars find themselves debating the true intentions of Nietzsche in suggesting the concept of the eternal return, but in doing this, they are in fact succumbing to the will to truth, obsessing over what is the one "true" truth. Nietzsche repeatedly asserts that any self-overcoming will include an overcoming of the will to truth. This is possible to do with the Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence once one recognizes that they are actually separate "truths" and one does not have to be correct and the other false. The doctrine functions as a psychological apparatus to aid people in their living "well" while they are still alive. In this manner, the act of believing assigns a value of truth to it, and allows it to function truthfully or "well" for the individual employing it. The truth of the metaphysical claim does not matter in the slightest while one still lives. Its truth only becomes an issue if, or when, the "end" is reached and takes hold of the individual. If this is the case, there is nothing that the individual can do to change things, because if it is the fundamental structure of the temporal universe, it will not care in the slightest whether someone accepted it as true during their lives or not. Thus it becomes apparent that the Eternal Return as a mental apparatus functions independently of its truth as a metaphysical structure, while the temporal nature of the universe, whatever it may be, already is what it is regardless of whether all individuals wish it or not. Perhaps, if the Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence takes hold of all of humanity, all problems will be solved, and the frontiers of human potential expanded. But if not, there's always next time...
