Even before the announcement that President Barack Obama ordered terrorist Osama bin Ladin to be killed by U.S. troops, celebrities attending the White House Correspondents Dinner were behind him. Although President Obama took a beating in the polls, sliding down to only a 50% approval rating, according to Rasmussen, supporters including Russell Simmons, Hill Harper, Rachel Roy, Kevin Liles and Mekhi Phifer said they would all help him campaign in 2012.
President of Def Jam Russell Simmons said he helped the President campaign in 2008 and planned to help him in re-election next year. Despite the music executive’s friendship with rumored Republican candidate Donald Trump, who was booed by the press corps on the red carpet, Simmons doesn’t think the real estate mogul has what it takes to win the presidency.
“Donald is a good friend of mine right? But some of his statements appeal to some of the lowest ideals of our country,” Simmons said. “If he were to win a nomination then [President Obama would] be in for sure for four more years.”
Another music executive Kevin Liles, who was invited to the dinner by White House correspondent April Ryan, has already started campaigning for the President.
‘We did a big event at the Waldorf Astoria,” said Liles. “Our job is to continue to push him toward the right agenda and the young people’s job is to keep working hard to make sure we keep the people we want in office elected.”
Only a day after the dinner, many are speculating that President Obama may have guaranteed his re-election with the announcement that bin Ladin has been killed. “There will be absolute consensus that the Obama administration's elimination of bin Laden is a huge victory for the president,” wrote Time’s Mark Halperin. “It will reinforce the notion that Barack Obama will be very tough to beat for re-election.”
The White House Correspondent's Dinner is an annual fundraiser for the White House Correspondent's Association and one of Washington's glitziest nights. Hosted by SNL's Seth Meyers inside the Washington Hilton, President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama were the guests of honor again this year.
