MLB Power Rankings: Week 3

First Posted: 04-20-11 02:11 PM   |   Updated: 04-20-11 02:11 PM

The MLB season is off and running, and so are the Rockies. Behind a lethal combination of pitching and hitting, Colorado is 12-5 and sits atop the NL West. In the AL West, the Rangers have picked up where they left off last season, and could also make the case for the top spot. The surprising Indians rank third, with Philly and the Yankees rounding out the top five.

And hold the phone, the Kansas City Royals -- yes, that's right -- the Royals are playing some terrific baseball and snuck their way into the top ten.

Watch out for the Reds and the reigning champion Giants, two teams that can get hot in a hurry and have the tools to stay hot.

Mr. Irrelevant (dead last) goes to the Seattle Mariners, who are by far the worst team in baseball.

(Note: This is the first of our monthly series on MLB Power Rankings.)

1). Rockies (12-5)

Colorado has baseball's best record thanks to the incredible power of Troy Tulowitzki, who has blossomed into a bonafide superstar. With seven home runs and superb defense, he is the anchor of this team. One major concern looking ahead is Ubaldo Jimenez, who is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in his first two starts. Jimenez, as we know, steamrolled his way into the record books last season, becoming just the third pitcher in MLB history to win 11 out of his first 12 games and have an ERA below 1.00 (0.93).

Giants trounce number one team on the way to the top in the standings. Too much talent. It may be a blessing Zito is out. Let some minor league guy step up.

Just in the nick of time, there's only a few hundred thousand games left in the season.

The Giants play 22 of their first 31 games on the road. So far, it's 6 at home, and 12 away. And, they're 10-8. They're ahead of the Yankees and Reds.

GO GIANTS !!! The defending world champions.

The Indians are winning because they have several players playing miles above their actual capabilities. They're hot right now, but there's little chance they will sustain it through the year. Then again, you never know in baseball...its a strange game. Look at the Padres last year. But personally I have to say the Twins or White Sox win the division.

Some are playing above their potential, but Carlos Santana is certainly playing below his.
