Park Celebrated with Ribbon Cutting
(October 27, 2010)

Santee celebrated another milestone in the development of Town Center Community Park phase II at a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 27. Members of the Santee City Council, County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, Representatives from the San Diego Chargers Community Relations Office and the Santee Park and Recreation Committee gathered at the park’s eastern side to mark the completion of artificial turf playing fields and other major improvements at the $23.5 million park. Youngsters wearing their jerseys and uniforms added fun to the event by dashing across the new playing fields when the ribbon was cut.

The eastern part of the park includes lighted synthetic turf football and soccer fields, playgrounds, concession stand, restrooms, walking trails, and picnic shelters. These fields will fill the need for youth soccer and football for our community and allow for growth in sports such as lacrosse and adult flag football and soccer programs. The two synthetic fields alone will provide an additional 4,700 hours annually of after school and weekend playing time.

The surfacing material on the age separated play ground is made from recycled rubber and includes a shade cover for year round protection from the sun. The 1,400 square foot, full-service concession stand is operated through a partnership agreement with the Santee Ravens Youth Football and Cheer and offers refreshments to spectators and participants while providing an opportunity for the league to raise funds.

A trail system is interlinked to all parts of the park, surrounding streets and schools reinforcing Santee’s commitment to a sustainable, walk-able, accessible community. Helping citizens to decrease sedentary lifestyles and encourage wellness.

Town Center Park will be the site for many community events in the future, including the Star PALS Chargers Junior Training Camp on November 9. Next spring, a community-wide grand opening event will celebrate the final features of the park, including the entertainment stage, Marine Memorial and human sundial.

Construction costs for this park were funded through a combination of redevelopment bonds, developer impact fees and grants with no new taxes or resident fees. One such grant through the East County YMCA was provided by the National Football League’s Youth Football Fund, the NFL Players Association and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation for $200,000, used towards the construction of the football field.

Phase II of the project also included the sports complex which opened in June (see more below) and improvements at Town Center Community Park west.

The sports complex portion of Town Center Community Park Phase 2 was officially dedicated on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. The sports complex, approximately 15 acres of the park’s 55 total acres, includes three lighted softball/baseball fields with artificial turf outfields, two arena soccer fields,  parking and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant will serve typical ball park food, including beer and wine. Batting cages will be opening in late June.
