Jacob Lusk Leaves 'American Idol'

American Idol Steven Tyler

DERRIK J. LANG   05/ 5/11 09:59 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — Jacob Lusk is out of air on "American Idol." The booming 23-year-old vocalist from Compton, Calif., was revealed to have received the fewest viewer votes on the Fox talent contest Thursday.

A day earlier, he had unsuccessfully attempted both parts of "No Air," the duet of Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown, and a tender rendition of "Love Hurts," the classic tune made famous by Nazareth and Roy Orbison.

"I got to share a little bit with America, and I think America's fallen in love with me," said Lusk after his elimination. "Now I can go and put out that good-feeling R&B; music that reminds you of Luther (Vandross) or those great old singers."

A tearful Lauren Alaina, the soaring 16-year-old songstress of Rossville, Ga., joined Lusk as one of the bottom two vote-getters.

Despite her position, Alania impressed the "Idol" judges with her performances of Carrie Underwood's "Flat on the Floor" and The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" on Wednesday's installment of current and classic tunes.

"Jacob had a rough night last night," said "Idol" mentor and Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine. "I think his nerves are getting the best of him."

Besides Alaina, the other remaining finalists are over-the-top 22-year-old rocker James Durbin of Santa Cruz, Calif.; deep-voiced 17-year-old country crooner Scotty McCreery of Garner, N.C.; and bluesey 20-year-old singer Haley Reinhart, of Wheeling, Ill.

The singers will return to the stage next week with another finalist dismissed next Thursday.

The 10th season "Idol" champion is scheduled to be crowned on the May 26 finale.

This dude's ego made Pia's massive love of herself look like PippyLongstockings. And the way everyone has been overPraising his squeaky, pitchy, screechOwl high notes is justNauseating. Jacob couldn't shine Luther Vandross'sShoes, although he obviously has appointed himself his heir apparent.

I'm just hoping the allure of 35 or 40 million viewers allows Tyler to overcome the issues within Aerosmith and he can talk them into a performance for the finale show. That might be the only reason to watch it.

From the beginning of this season Idol has moved to make this show about young rockers so anyone who didn't fit that mode will not win this show. There were definitely others who had better voices who did not fit the mode and were voted off early. I didn't really ever feel that the coach worked with Jacob to help him choose selections that would fit his voice. I prefer the Voice because so far it's been about the voices and not so much about what you look like and the "total package", whatever that means. Jacob will do fine, Jennifer Hudson certainly did, as well as Adam Lambert.

There's really only one "rocker". That's all there ever was. The red-haired kid and one of the girls are pure country, and the other girl is.. I don't know, karaoke I guess.

Out of the whole bunch...the only one that I'd buy a CD from is Jacob Lusk. I thought that he was an AMAZING talent although I knew America wasn't going to vote for him largely due to his sexuality and tendency towards drama. If he records Gospel and R&B...I'll buy his music!

I don't understand how Haley's still there.

Jacob sucked. He should have left before Pia. So much shrieking and crying and did anyone notice he always had back up singers that weren't so in back? They were there to disguise the fact that he was often off key!

Jacob Lusk is a fine singer. All one has to do is see who is in the top four. There are no Italians, Latinos, Asians or African Americans. Jacob NEVER had a chance in this Obama run America...too many people are letting their color issues get in the way of real talent. Pia, Stefano, Jacob and other so called minorities were relieved immediately - that is America for you and their color issues are front and center. Historically, winners of AI don't do very well in selling records. I am predicting that James will win and then he will not sell but one album...Adam Lambert is the original. He was NOT chosen because he was gay, but clearly the BEST singer on the show. But, it is not about the best singer, it is the most popular singer voted on by teens. Men have won the past few years and not been successful. It has to be more about real talent and star quality than "he's so cute, or he sings like Adam." Listen to the radio and see what they are playing - do any of the Idol contestants sing that kind of music? No.

Gott in Himmel - what are you smoking? What does "this Obama run America" have to do with no minorities being in the final 4?

Every one of these kids had some good performances, but Haley is the only one with 2 phenomenal performances. Bennie and the Jets & House of the Rising Sun were so darn good that you can compare them to the original versions. She needs more training but she got it all

A woman singing "House of the Rising Sun"? What was she thinking? Certainly NOT about the lyrics!

Amusing Idol story on Gawker today. JLO's number was (clearly and unequivocally) not live.

Lauren is SUPER pretty, with a beautiful personality & she's extremely talented, but she's gonna have to pull a Jodin Sparks with her weight.

We live in a weight-conscious society; hence, AI alums are dropping extra poundage.

And, that’s a good thing, physically & aesthetically.

We want our celebs to look a certain way.
For those who wish to deny it, fine, but as they say: IT IS WHAT IT IS.

Feel free to protest, but that won't change anything.

Show biz is a shallow world.

Sorry babe!

I saw this coming a mile away.  He started out sooooo strong.  I thought he was awesome.  But somewhere along the line, he just ran out of steam.  And then he tried to overcompensate.  Still a talent but not an AI.

Thank god! He seems like such a sweet kid, but I couldn't imagine hearing him on the radio or buying his CD. He was painful to listen to. Luther? I think not.
03:27 PM on 5/06/2011
Jacobs problem wasn't his voice it was he acted like a GIRL! An R&B singer has to have swagger, even though Luther was Gay (come on we all knew it) He kept his gayness subdued, Jacob acts like a DIVA, they even said he did! Bye Jacob go join the Marine reserves and MAN UP!

I got tired of Jacob about 3/4 shows ago.
He is a diva & that's not appreciated, regardless.

He'll do well on Broadway, but I'd be interested to see if he can sell to today's youngsters.

It didn't matter to anyone that Luther was gay.
That wasn’t his calling card — IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE VOICE, THE SOUL, THE DELIVERY.

He transcended gender, because he WAS ONE OF A KIND & he will never go out of style.

Miss & Love you Luther.
