Jack M. Wilson, the outgoing president of the University of Massachusetts, has been appointed as interim president of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, the institute announced today.

Wilson will step down as president of the university on June 30 and become interim president and chief executive of the institute on July 1, the institute said.

Wilson will assist in the search for a permanent president and lead the institute as it moves toward construction of the institute's new building, which will be located next to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Lee Fentress, chairman of the institute’s board, said that Wilson, a member of the board, had been a "critical leader in helping the Institute to become a reality.”

“A dedicated educator well known for his tremendous stewardship of UMass, Jack shares the vision for the Institute as a living breathing constantly evolving bipartisan center that would reflect the Senator’s passion for education, history and civic engagement,” Fentress said in a statement.
