SA to announce Budget funding boost for DPP

More than $20 million will be announced in tomorrow's South Australian Budget for the justice system.

It comes a day after a report highlighted serious staffing and funding problems within the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The State Government says there will be almost $5 million over four years for DNA testing, extra support for the police paedophile task force and $3 million for more prosecutors at the DPP.

Premier Mike Rann says a victims rights commissioner will also be appointed.

"Because my view is that victims of crime are bystanders to the crime and they should not be bystanders to the court process," he said.

The State Opposition has cautiously welcomed the spending.

Yesterday it was revealed a report on the DPP had detailed serious workload, management and organisational problems within the office.
