Doing the Kelby videos is a lot of fun, and they have gradually (actually, more like, suddenly) amassed the greatest compendium of video learning and teaching on the planet about anything visual--Photoshop, lighting, digital photography, you name it. Birth records of more than 6 million children born in California during the 1990s and early 2000s show a clear link between the month of conception and autism risk, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis. Among the children included in the study, those conceived during winter had a significantly greater risk of autism. The risk of having a child with an autism spectrum disorder grew progressively throughout the fall and winter to early spring, with children conceived in March having a 16 percent greater risk of later autism diagnoses, when compared with…

    10 May 2011 | 10:03 am
For the ultimate in a nondenominational wedding ceremony, consider a quantum entanglement. The ceremony, developed by conceptual artist, Jonathon Keats, is borrowed from quantum physics, where when two or more subatomic particles become entangled, they behave as one. According to Keats, the couple won't know to what extent they've become entangled, because any attempt to measure a quantum system disturbs it. "The quantum marriage will literally be broken up by skepticism about it," he said. Full story at Discovery News. More news from Discovery Communications. Photo credit: Fotolia Permalink…

Question: When you autograph a book, what does your message say? Answer: It says “Resisting you is futile.” Question: Why do write this? Answer: Because I want my readers to feel good about themselves. Question: Why do you sign the cover? Answer: There are three reasons. First, it saves me lots of time by not having to open the book. Second, and more important, the main purpose of getting an autograph is to show others that you know the author, so having the autograph on the cover makes this much more obvious. Third, it helps readers meet people because the autograph is a good way…

  • Marketing to nobody

    Seth Godin
    10 May 2011 | 2:01 am
Nobody wears a watch any more. Nobody wears a tie either. Nobody shops at a bookstore, at least nobody I know. The market of nobody is big indeed. You can do really well selling to nobody if you do your homework. In fact, most companies selling to nobody outperform those that are trying to sell to everyone.
  • Selling vs. inviting

    Seth Godin
    9 May 2011 | 2:37 am
Selling is often misunderstood, largely by people who would be a lot more comfortable merely inviting. If I invite you to a wedding, or a party, or to buy a $500,000 TV ad for $500, there's no resistance on your part. Either you jump at the chance and say yes, or you have a conflict and say no. It's not my job to help you overcome your fear of commitment, to help you see the ultimate value and most of all, to work with you as you persuade yourself and others to do something that might just work. If the marketing and product development team do a great job, selling is a lot easier... so easy…

  • Share your confusions

    Seth Godin
    8 May 2011 | 2:02 am
If you're building for digital, for a place where you can't possibly be present to guide or to answer questions, I think it's vital you have someone who can review your work. Same for instruction manuals, secret ballots and road signs. Not to make suggestions to make it better (what do they know?) but to share their confusions. I don't think that's a phrase, but it should be. Share your confusions is a way of asking someone to dissect your work and point out what's not totally clear.
  • How long is your long run?

    Seth Godin
    7 May 2011 | 1:47 am
The bank robber may have a long run of just thirty minutes. Stealing money today appears worth it because tomorrow is just too far away to consider. There are organizations and nations that have been around for hundreds of years and expect to be around for another thousand. They have a long run a little longer than yours. I think we can agree on what the short run is. The question worth asking your brand, your boss or your family is: what's the long run? Most of the time, we err on the side of short.

This post is by Mike Essex of Koozai. Regardless of the niche a blog operates in, it is possible to convince brands to provide free products for you to review. If it’s a well known niche, such as trainers, then the brands will already have products available for review, as that’s the same way they gain exposure in the media, so the issue becomes more about standing out from the crowd. Alternatively, if a niche is smaller (such as high-powered lasers), the focus shifts to educating the brand owners on why they should send you a product, and the exposure they can get in return. In short,…

Becker on Immigration Simply, Becker thought legal immigration could be solved by charging $50,000 at the door for up to 1 million immigrants a year. That would add $50 Billion to the US budget, would be a gating factor (they’d have to have means to get in), and would be far less arbitrary than the curent…

  • The Simple Sales Strategy that Boosts Your Bottom-Line

    Sean D'Souza
    10 May 2011 | 6:33 am
Choice is a good thing. Too much choice can be a bad thing. It can confuse customers and cause them to abandon your sales process early. So, what if you’re selling several (or many) products or services? You know you want to make compelling offers, and that email is a great place to put those offers in front of your potential customers. But how do you give equal attention to each, or guide your prospects to the product that will best work for them? The answer I’ve found, after extensive testing, is the Two-Option Sales Strategy for your email marketing. It offers the perfect…
  • The Ultimate Guide to Twitter Marketing

    Gabrielle Conde
    9 May 2011 | 7:23 am
I’ve probably approached Twitter marketing in fifty different ways. And in an attempt to find the best way to go forward with my own marketing efforts on Twitter, I recently realized that I’d collected a fairly valuable list of killer resources along the way. Would you like to know how to start marketing your business on Twitter? How about more advanced approaches to getting more retweets, more followers, and more prospects for your business? If there are secrets and special formulas that can magically unlock the power of social media out there, I don’t know them. What I do…
  • Copyblogger Weekly Wrap

    7 May 2011 | 9:37 am
The other day while out riding my bike, I was accosted by three turkeys. I’m not kidding. The turkeys were crossing the road, and I was screaming down a hill at them. I hit the brakes but they didn’t flinch at all — and then, they advanced menacingly. I was able to make an initial escape, but they gave aggressive chase. This may sound funny to you, but you weren’t there … this was payback. Payback for Thanksgiving. And no, none of this is relevant to business, copywriting, or marketing. But do you want to be unprepared for the upcoming turkey insurgency? I…
  • Is the Online Gold Rush Over?

    Robert Bruce
    6 May 2011 | 6:50 am
At the height of the great Gold Rush of 1896, the population in the arctic Klondike region suddenly swelled to 40,000 souls. The promise of incredible wealth (and more than that, a legendary adventure) was too compelling to ignore. Kind of sounds like the web 1.0 and 2.0 booms. With little more than a great idea, a few bucks for hosting, and some hard work, a single person can change their life using the internet-as-lever. Question is: is too late for you? In this episode Brian Clark and I discuss: Is it too late to start online? Have you missed the boat entirely? How to quit prospecting and…

  • Yammer Ups Its Enterprise Game with NetSuite Integration

    10 May 2011 | 10:20 am
Yammer surged in popularity last year. According to Yammer's Vice President of Marketing Steve Apfelberg, the company experienced triple digit growth. It also expanded its features beyond just microblogging by adding features such as document editing, idea management and its own app store-like collection of third-party applications. But integration in "real" enterprise software has always been missing. You can embed Yammer in Microsoft SharePoint, but not much more. That's starting to change: Yammer and ERP software-as-a-service company NetSuite announced today that the two companies are…

It has been a big year for WordPress. If there were still some lingering doubts about its potency as a full-fledged content management system, then the full support for custom taxonomies and custom post types in WordPress 3.0 core should have put them to rest. WordPress 3.1 took those leaps one step further, polishing custom taxonomies with multi-taxonomy query support, polishing custom post types with native template support for archives and feeds, and introducing features (like the “admin bar”) that make it easier to quickly edit and add content from the front end.In the…

  • How To Get Sign-Off For Your Designs

    Paul Boag
    6 May 2011 | 3:00 am
“How did you do that?” My colleague Leigh sounded impressed. He had been working with a problem client for weeks trying to get design approval. Then I came along and was able to get signed-off in a single conference call. “Can you teach me how you did that?” he asked. I mumbled something about years of experience, but the truth was I didn’t have a clue. It just seems I can find design approval easier than most.As I thought about it I realised there are actually quite a lot of things that have become second nature for me over the years. But I have…

  • Shots From My Denmark/Sweden Trip

    Scott
    9 May 2011 | 9:06 pm
Setting the Bar Low Guarantees Success! I went into this trip with very modest photographic goals: I just wanted to do better in Denmark, then I did in Spain last year, where after 10 days in Barcelona I came home with absolutely nothing. Not that I didn’t shoot, mind you—I just came home without one shot I’d show anybody. (My buddy Dave Moser didn’t believe me, so I showed him what I got in Spain, and his exact words were, “Ohhhh. Boss. What happened?”). I had never been to Copenhagen, so although I did want to take lots of photos (and I only had 2-1/2 days to shoot), I…

Hi Gang: By the time you read this, I’m already on my way back from an incredible weekend in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmo, Sweden, hanging out and shooting photos with my good friend Terry White. Terry, whose full time job is an Adobe Graphics Evangelist, was in the middle of an Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 roll-out tour, and he told me last month that during the tour he’d have a few days off in Copenhagen, and since I had always wanted to visit Copenhagen, on Thursday I hopped a night flight to meet him there, and spend the weekend just being a tourist, and taking lots of photos.

Photo by bikeracer Capturing movement in images is something that many photographers only think to do when they are photographing sports or other fast moving subjects. While there is an obvious opportunity in sports photography to emphasize the movement of participants – almost every type of photography can benefit from the emphasis of movement in a shot – even when the movement is very small, slow and/or subtle. • Apple patent reveals unused iPad design with two USB slots

    Kelly Hodgkins
    10 May 2011 | 12:00 pm
In his last appearance during an earnings conference call last year, Steve Jobs hinted that Apple tested several designs for the iPad during its development stage. One of these possible designs may have reared its ugly head in a patent application recently approved by the USPTO. This patent details a Wi-Fi+3G iPad with an extra USB slot for landscape connectivity. This auxiliary USB slot would let you place the iPad in a dedicated landscape dock as well as dock in portrait mode and simultaneously sync using both USB slots. Apple now holds a patent for this design, but it may never debut in an…

In the first three months of 2011, Apple shipped 18.6 million iPhones globally, a 14.9 percent jump from the previous quarter. While Apple showed impressive gains, Nokia posted a significant decline. Q1 2011 shipments from the Finnish handset maker declined 14.5 percent from the 28.3 million handsets shipped in Q4 2010 to 24.2 million in Q1 of this year. At the end of last quarter, a mere 5.6 million handsets separated the two companies. This gap could be narrowed…

Shooting in big, dimly lit rooms used to scare the heck out of me. I'd bring out all of my big flashes -- and borrow whatever others I could get my hands on. But still, I never seemed to have enough light to do what I wanted. What I didn't know then was that it is usually better to let the ambient in a big room do its own heavy lifting, then tweak it with a little strobe. It may well be a great flash -- or it could be a piece of crap. But it won't get any kind of a serious look here for one simple reason: China's manufacturing and distribution system is sufficiently borked to make product quality control and customer service damn near impossible.Which is a shame, really, considering how well they could be…

    Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips

  • 100 Way Lightroom Kicks Bridges Ass! (for photographers)

    jgilbert@photoshopuser.com (Matt Kloskowski)
    9 May 2011 | 6:53 am
Last week, Scott Kelby mentioned a whole bunch of Lightroom learning resources that we, over at Kelby Media Group, have. One of them was a brand new mega-tutorial-thingee that Scott and I recorded recently. It’s called 100 Ways That Lightroom Kicks the Bridges Ass for Photographers. The idea originally came from Scott when he and I were talking about the inevitable “Why should I use Lightroom if I already have Bridge” question we get. Instead of doing a long exhaustive video of the differences between LR and Bridge, Scott came up with this idea instead. On the site,…

There’s a some there for $9.99, and a lot of them (like my Mastering Color for Photoshop CS4) are still perfectly applicable for CS5. Look at it this way, you’re bound to get at least one out of a DVD to make it worth $9.99 (but you’ll probably get more). OK, on to the tip: You probably know by now that Lightroom 3 has Facebook and Flickr integration in it. Just go to the Library module, on the…

I saw three types of comments. 1 and 2 below address them pretty quickly. Number 3 below is my main point because that’s the comment I saw the most. Here goes: 1) Layers “for”, Layers “in”, Layers “with”? One word. Yup, one word did all of this. You got us on a technicality. Should it have been written “Layers With Lightroom”. Yes. It was a simple,…

I know I’m a little late with this one, but I was on vacation with my family last week and took the week off from, well, just about everything Anyway, just in case you haven’t read about it already, Adobe released Lightroom 3.4. There’s some new overall camera support as well as tethering support for a few more cameras (60D, 550D, and Nikon D7000). There’s also some minor bug fixes. The best thing to do is check out Tom Hogarty’s blog for the full write-up. And of course, you can download the update over at Adobe’s website or simply just go to Help >…
  • Layers for Lightroom?

    jgilbert@photoshopuser.com (Matt Kloskowski)

What’s probably the most-used feature in Photoshop? Layers right? Something that’s layer-related is probably the main reason I ever leave Lightroom in the first place. Well, onOne Software has come out with a brand new plug-in that brings the features of layers to Lightroom. Yep, layers, stacking, blend modes, and even layer masks. In the scheme of how we work with our photos, this could really change things and I’m excited to see where it goes. I mean, think about all the times you go from Lightroom to Photoshop to simply add one layer or change a blend mode and use a mask.

  • Louie Called Yesterday….

    Joe McNally

First thing he said was, “It’s a good day, pal.” Louie is an extraordinary guy, and an average one at the same time. Average in that he immigrated here from Italy as a youngster, and made a life, as many have done. Extraordinary in his decency, humanity and good will. On 911 all those years ago, he took extraordinary to another level. Trapped in a smoky stairwell, he slipped and slid down railings, past hundreds of terrified people, to reach a door leading to the lobby of the still standing tower. It was jammed. The lobby was filled with debris from the already collapsed…

Done. Home. 12,531 miles. Flew out. Drove back, and not in a straight line. Life on a bus. A three foot wide, moving, turning, stopping and starting bed. It was like sleeping for five weeks in one of those beds that have the magic fingers, and the bus was a never ending supply of quarters. It was, you know, fun. But then, I have a broad definition of fun. We’ve got a lot of people to thank, first and foremost all the folks who came out to a stop. Lots of gracious, easy going flashinistas investigating light out there. Good crew, good questions, great enthusiasm. Our ever wonderful VALs,…

www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-qOqeAzNa8 I was literally up to my ass in alligators not too long ago, on behalf of Kelby Training, attempting a video tutorial on location lighting in first, a swamp, and then later on a beach, in decidedly non-beach-like weather. Doing the Kelby videos is a lot of fun, and they have gradually (actually, more like, suddenly) amassed the greatest compendium of video learning and teaching on the planet about anything visual--Photoshop, lighting, digital photography, you name it. But this was a frustrating day, one of those location days where you barely find the…

We are goofing our way across the country, in our last week of life on a bus. It’s been a fun ride, mostly because of the people we have met, the passion we have encountered, and the incredibly warm welcome we have received from Seattle to NY to Grand Rapids to Atlanta to Albuquerque. We have taught, laughed, screwed up, thrown flashes in the air, logged over 11,000 miles (so far), and just in general, made light (ouch!) of everything. Just a bunch of bucketheads on a bus. Then, in the midst of a laugh, you get a note that’s like a quick snort of smelling salts. It clears the…

Picked up again for the second half of the Flashbus Tour. Atlanta Saturday, Nashville Sunday, Raleigh Durham today. This has been one of those once in a lifetime adventures, nothing short of amazing. People across the country have been so gracious. The bus has alternately been loaded with gifts of cookies, donuts, beer, brownies, coffee, candy, beer,  flashlights, and, well, more beer. We have certainly been a motley crew, especially anybody who sees us in the morning, staggering around a loading dock, pre-shower, moving gear and boxes out of the hold of the bus. Very glam, life on the road.
