Broadway and film actress Laila Robins, who stars in the Guthrie Theater's "Summer and Smoke," has firm Minnesota roots although she has never appeared on a professional stage here. Born to Latvian-American parents - her father is a 3M chemist - she put on kiddie plays in her family's St. Paul home. While a student at Murray High School, she performed in plays but was better known as a cheerleader. At the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, she studied classical piano and opera.
