`Summer' star Robins has deep state roots.(VARIETY)

Broadway and film actress Laila Robins, who stars in the Guthrie Theater's "Summer and Smoke," has firm Minnesota roots although she has never appeared on a professional stage here.

Born to Latvian-American parents - her father is a 3M chemist - she put on kiddie plays in her family's St. Paul home. While a student at Murray High School, she performed in plays but was better known as a cheerleader. At the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, she studied classical piano and opera. "I wanted to be Joni Mitchell," she said.
