Today's Picnic!

[–]WanderingBison 1 point2 points 2 days ago

Hi guys, we're sitting at a picnic table behind the restrooms, behind the swings... There's around 12 of us here now :)

TIL about Louis Wain, a man whose cat paintings show the progression of his schizophrenia.

Jesus, I just spent 30 minutes explaining the story, but I accidentally clicked the "back" button on my mouse. Fuuuuck.

To quote wikipedia quickly, (because I'm too lazy to site a psychology book right now), "Characteristic symptoms: Two or more of the following, each present for much of the time during a one-month period (or less, if symptoms remitted with treatment). -Delusions -Hallucinations -Disorganized speech, which is a manifestation of formal thought disorder -Grossly disorganized behavior (e.g. dressing inappropriately, crying frequently) or catatonic behavior -Negative symptoms: Blunted affect (lack or decline in emotional response), alogia (lack or decline in speech), or avolition (lack or decline in motivation)

If the delusions are judged to be bizarre, or hallucinations consist of hearing one voice participating in a running commentary of the patient's actions or of hearing two or more voices conversing with each other, only that symptom is required above. The speech disorganization criterion is only met if it is severe enough to substantially impair communication.

Social or occupational dysfunction: For a significant portion of the time since the onset of the disturbance, one or more major areas of functioning such as work, interpersonal relations, or self-care, are markedly below the level achieved prior to the onset.

Significant duration: Continuous signs of the disturbance persist for at least six months. This six-month period must include at least one month of symptoms (or less, if symptoms remitted with treatment)."

As you can plainly read from this common diagnosis standard, disorganization doesn't need to be present. A number of combinations of behavior that can be perceived as crazy fall under this categorization. While dopamine may be a common factor, there's no thorough understanding of it. It's easy to claim emotions and whatnot are purely chemical, but this disease manifests in a variety of ways, more than can be explained by one chemical imbalance, in my opinion.

I speak with experience. A schizophrenic friend of mine most certainly was not disorganized. He was extremely brilliant; it was his curse in a way I suppose...

Isn't schizophrenia just a medical term for "crazy & we don't know why" and doesn't it have many different forms? Delusions can get pretty intricate and beautiful...

Have you ever been in a situation where you were telling the truth, but no one believed you because it seemed so contrived?

[–]WanderingBison 1 point2 points 11 days ago

I think you have strange friends. I love hearing about other people's dreams and I've never thought to question them. Of course I immediately start psychoanalyzing them though.

What is the worst thing that you have forgiven someone for doing, whether to you or someone else?

[–]WanderingBison 4 points5 points 12 days ago

What a horrible person. I'm sorry that people like that exist.

Buffy Alignment Demotivator I made a while ago; found it cleaning up my computer, thought I'd share...

This looks like something Professor Bonevac or one of his students made at UT (in a philosophy class). He uses Buffy, The Simpsons, etc. to teach and it's awesome :)

I just got home and some young boy had a gun aimed at my car as I pulled up to my driveway...

You are jumping to unfounded conclusions based on your own opinion. Where are your supporters? Dead? There are many reasons to fear guns (even ones that can only do minor damage) and it is worthwhile to call the police to help regular citizens avoid costly litigation over preventable situations. A lot of people have helped me realize this, so try to listen. You really haven't thought this through. 1. I have a rental car that I can't afford right now due to extenuating circumstances, and if it were to become damaged by even BBs, I would be forced to pay for repairs. I really wouldn't want to sue some parents for negligence over this. 2. The gun was black and shiny and was being aimed at my face (through my windshield). I couldn't make out what it was because he was holding it with 2 hands and playing with it like a war hero, despite the fact that he was looking out of my neighbor's front yard. 3. I didn't try to over-react. It would have hurt me if someone got hurt somehow over something I thought I could have prevented. I didn't know his story and I wasn't in a position to assume he was harmless after he threatened me for fun. No one was hurt by my actions. It is possible that my reaction even helped someone. I've really been forced to give this a lot of thought, and maybe you should too.

Wow. Well, apparently you're one of the only people who thinks that. Why would living in the "ghetto" or not make any difference? It wouldn't make a gun any more or less dangerous in the hands of a 7 year old. It's not like the police caused any trouble; they just checked to make sure no one was being negligent by letting a 7 year old play with guns.

I'm just not sure I understand, is that because there aren't any guns there? Or because fake guns or bb guns are so common? I like Australia btw. I'm so envious of you for getting to live there.

That's true, it was sort of scary... Maybe I feel like I watch too many crazy movies... I don't know. I definitely was considering that it was probably a bb gun at the time, but I couldn't shake the possibility that it wasn't... It took me like 15 minutes to call the police. I feel like there's something I could have done in the moment that would have been more appropriate than my chicken response, but I can't really think of anything.

Your post reminds me a lot of something similar that happened me to me. Luckily, in my case, I was not around the second time my friend went through a religious/psychotic episode and I was not harmed, but he did hurt himself in a way that hurt me...

Did you ever see your friend "Paul" again before he died? I know how difficult it can be to trust someone who has done something like this again. Sometimes I feel bad for not letting my psychotic friend back into my life, but I am honestly scared of him and I rationalize that that is a good reason. I consider myself very lucky for never being in a similar situation as yours, I feel like I easily could have if things had been different the first time or if I had been there the second time...
