How to block searches of your private information on Facebook

Friday May 13, 2011
privacyAre you concerned about how much information is out there for anyone to see via your Facebook profile?

Let me put this another way. Do you actually know how much information is out there for public consumption, via your Facebook profile?

Quite a bit actually, if your security settings are set to the default "Everyone" setting. Anyone who searches the Web, anywhere in the world, can see your information: phone numbers, addresses, photos, even who your friends are and what you're saying in your updates. If you would like to make your Facebook information inaccessible to search, you'll want to read How to Block Searches Of Your Facebook Profile, a quick informational tutorial on how to guard yourself on this popular social networking site.

Facebook search tools: Openbook, Booshaka, Kurrently

Wednesday May 11, 2011
facebook searchFacebook, the world's most popular social networking site, does have a moderately good internal search tool that you can use to find people and groups. However, there are a couple of interesting third party Facebook search tools that are worth a try:
  • Openbook: This search tool looks at Facebook statuses, throughout the entire network. Only people whose security settings are not set to "Friends Only" are included in this tool; surprisingly, from the point of view of being safe online, this includes a LOT. (Not sure why this is something you should be concerned about? Read Protect your Facebook privacy with ReclaimPrivacy.org.)
  • Booshaka: Find what's currently being shared across Facebook, and check various social rankings (yourself, your friends, groups, etc.).
  • Kurrently: Brings back real-time results for both Twitter and Facebook (you can choose one or the other or both), brings back links, images, videos, etc. for any keyword or phrase you might type in. You can also choose how fast you want the results to be whizzing by you; since they are delivered in real time, it can get going pretty quickly.

They allow the application to be customized to fit the personal needs of each user if they need additional features, while minimizing the size of the application itself" (from the official Firefox Extensions site).
