Croatia is within reach of conquering the historic goal of completing European Union accession negotiations and everything that is happening has been expected, Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said in Petrinja on Friday.

Asked if monitoring was a negotiation failure, Kosor said all closed negotiation chapters were constantly being monitored in cooperation with the European Commission and that everything was being done to complete the negotiations.

"We are extremely pleased with the evaluation of Ms Reding, the vice president of the European Commission and the person in charge of Chapter 23, who said she was impressed by the progress Croatia has achieved in the judiciary," Kosor told the press.

She said that yesterday, the government sent to parliament a motion under which, alongside the State Audit Office, the State Election Commission too would oversee the annual financial operations and financial reports of political parties, independent and national minority deputies, and independent members of local and regional bodies, adding that today the government was expected to pass additional decisions on Chapter 8 (Competition Policy).

Kosor recalled European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso's recent statement in Zagreb, when commended Croatia and said the government was committed to completing the EU entry talks. She said the government was determined to finish the job and that everything was proceeding as planned.

Asked to comment on Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic's statement that it would be morally and politically fair if she signed the accession treaty, Kosor said the most important thing at the moment was to complete the negotiations.

"It's essential that we go step by step, after so many years of negotiations, after we unblocked the negotiations in 2009 and reached an agreement with Slovenian Prime Minister (Borut) Pahor (on a border dispute), otherwise we still would have only five chapters closed."

Kosor underlined the importance of completing the negotiations, signing the accession treaty, calling a referendum and convincing citizens to vote in favour of EU accession.

Kosor said this was all she was thinking about at the moment and that everything was being done for the citizens of Croatia.
