We can’t wait to see more! Who knows… ever since artist Katie Cook tweeted: “I’m going to start a Kickstarter project to help me fund re-filming Star Wars scene by scene… With an all kitten cast,” we can’t help but wonder if this isn’t the perfect match for Princess Leia.

Solar-Powered R2-D2!

May 2, 2011

With the never-ending energy crisis always on our minds, it’s always a good idea to think of alternative energy solutions, especially when building and operating astromechs like R2-D2. Check out this cool Artoo unit with solar panels! Now all we need are two suns…

Developed by Yosuke Kimura and Daisuke Goto, two electrical systems majors at Hiroshima International University, the radio controlled homage to the Star Wars robot includes two shoulder-mounted solar panels that would conceivably power the droid when its normal energy supply runs down. The robot was recently on display in downtown Hiroshima, Japan as an example of the university’s engineering program.

Boba Loves Bunnies?

May 2, 2011

Words: Bonnie Burton
Art: Kelly Kerrigan

Artist Kelly Kerrigan shows off a soft spot of Boba Fett that we don’t normally see. Makes you wonder if the Slave I has a rabbit hutch. StarWars.com chats with Kelly about her Star Wars bounty hunter bunny art.

Why did you decide to pair up bunnies with Star Wars characters?

This new series of artwork is how my creativity has responded to the death of my husband, Paul. He died on December 18, 2010 after finding out in August the he had a rare cancer. We both loved Star Wars and he had a particular connection to rabbits as they are portrayed in movies, books and gaming.

He would often dress as a Pooka for LARP events. I started painting about 2 weeks after he died and the ideas for new work keep coming. I have always been a painter, but I think this is the best work I have ever done. I am certain that He is the inspiration for all of this and the reason I feel so good about what I am painting.

What is it about bunnies that make even the most ruthless bounty hunter look like a softy?

I think therein lies the answer. The softening of the ruthless: The unlikely care and cuddling that a hardened clone warrior would have to undertake to handle a delicate bunny seems as it would be an act of extreme patience on his psyche. Perhaps his trainers are putting him through an exercise to engage those parts of his brain that define the opposite of his purpose.

R2-D2 Invades RoboGames

May 2, 2011

Words/Photos/Video: Bonnie Burton

We might not have a droid army at our beck and call…yet, but in real life we can still watch robots battle each other for our amusement during the international battle bot competition RoboGames!

While 250-pound robots fought in the arena, R2-D2 was on the sidelines watching all the action like a real robo-celebrity. R2-D2 also visited backstage to say hello to the robot builders, to cheer students on at Bot Ball, and to hang out out with the next generation of robot overlords.

“We Are Jedi” T-shirts for Japanese Earthquake Relief

April 29, 2011

In the wake of the recent earthquake disaster in Japan, fans from across the Pacific have received authorization from Lucasfilm to create Jedi-themed t-shirts to aid in the relief effort — a cool “We Are Jedi” banner with the country’s signature hook-shape forming the “J”. From the “We Are Jedi Project” website:

While many charity activities were made around the world, we, Japanese Star Wars fans were thinking what we could do. And then we decided to start our fundraising project. The 1st mission is to make “We are JEDI” T-shirts.

While our T-shirt project is not sponsored by Lucasfilm Ltd., we got authorization and cooperation to use some Star Wars phrases and images.

These T-shirts will be developed under the supervision of Lucasfilm and all the profits that we got from the sale of them will be contributed to the Japan Red Cross Society.

Payments can easily be made through Paypal so head on over and count yourself among the Jedi in Japan!
