Barry Hugh Williams moved to Neath, the club he started at, for the 2001-2002 season and has been with the region ever since. He was the Ospreys captain for half of the 2003-2004 season and onwards, until the armband was passed to Duncan Jones at the start of the 2006-2007 season.

Williams's former clubs include Llandovery, Llanelli, Richmond and Bristol Rugby, from where he moved back to Wales.

Williams's numerous representative honours include Wales U15, U16 and U21 levels, Wales Youth, Wales A and the senior Wales XV. As a senior player he was capped 24 times and scored 5 tries for his country. Williams was also part of the series-winning British and Irish Lions squad that toured South Africa in 1997.

The 2006-2007 season saw Williams play on 28 occasions for the Ospreys, taking his representative tally near the century mark. Williams also scored three tries for the region over the course of the season. Williams sustained a shoulder injury at the end of the season which required an operation in May 2007.
