A total of 114 sending offs have been given in World Cup history between 1930-2002.

The red card and yellow card system was first introduced to the World Cup Finals in 1970 in Mexico.

The first player ever to be sent off in a World Cup match was Peru's Mario de Las Casas against Romania in 1930.

The first red card was handed out on June 14th, 1974, to Carlos Caszely of Chile, in a match against West Germany, after 67 minutes. It was given for a foul on Berti Vogts.

The fastest red card was given to the Uruguayan player Sergio Batista after just 56 seconds in their first round match against Scotland in 1986.

The first player to be red-carded in a final was Pedro Monzon of Argentina against West Germany in 1990. His team-mate Gustavo Dezotti also received a red card later in the same match.

Marcel Desailly of France is the only other player to have been sent off in a final when he got expelled against Brazil in 1998.

The First goalkeeper ever to be sent off was Gianluca Pagliuca of Italy against Norway on 23rd of June 1994.
Claudio Caniggia of Argentina was the first player to receive a red card whilst sitting on the bench. It was a game against Sweden in Japan 2002.

Rigobert Song of Cameroon is the only player to have been red-carded in two different tournaments, against Brazil in 1994 and against Chile in 1998.

The first yellow card was handed out on May 31st, 1970 during the game between Mexico and Soviet Union. According to the match report, there were 5 players cautioned but it is unclear who received the first.

Johan Cruyff of the Netherlands was the first player to be cautioned during half time. The two teams were walking off the field with Cruyff in discussion with the referee, when he pulled out a yellow card and showed it to Cruyff, during the 1974 final in West Germany.

Drug testing began in the 1966 tournament in England.
The first player ever caught using illegal drugs was Ernst Jean-Joseph of Haiti in 1974.
