This guest post is by Dona Collins of CreditLoan.com. For anyone starting a revolution, or a business, Twitter can be a success. For the rest of the world, it can be a waste of time that doesn’t get the message out to people they want to reach. And for some, it’s no more a bunch of nonsense limited to 140 characters—as this infographic shows. I’ll discuss it in more detail below. Twitter was very popular during the crises in Egypt, Tunisia, and Yemen earlier this year as it worked to spread the word about where protesters could meet, and tell the world what was happening.

Don't throw away your cell. The classification of mobile phones as "possibly carcinogenic" isn't as scary as it sounds. The WHO has classified cell phones as "possibly carcinogenic," but there are still many open questions. Most research suggests that cell phones do not pose an increased cancer risk. As hormones go, testosterone doesn't always have the best reputation. But without testosterone, there would be no men. The testosterone makes men "manly," but does it also make them smarter? The idea that men are better at math and science than women are is one of many stereotypes that doesn't hold up well under scientific scrutiny. In this article, we'll explore whether other common perceptions about men are accurate. Full article at HowStuffWorks.com. Total aggregation of HowStuffWorks.com. FaceNiff is an Android application that lets users sniff and intercept web session profiles over Wi-Fi networks, stealing other users’ credentials from Facebook, Twitter and other services. The app requires root access on the user’s Android smartphone, but other than that it’s fairly simple to use, which makes it perhaps even more dangerous than Firesheep, a Firefox extension that lets users hijack Facebook and Twitter sessions over Wi-Fi networks. FaceNiff also works on WPA-encrypted Wi-Fi networks, which Firesheep doesn’t support. While we’re not suggesting that…

Expanding highways and roads increases congestion by creating more demand--and building more public transportation doesn't help the problem. Now a study from the University of Toronto confirms it: Expanding highways and roads increases congestion by creating more demand. And building out public transportation systems doesn't help either; there will always be more drivers to fill up any new road we build. The disheartening study used data from hundreds of metro…

In All Marketers Tell Stories, I argue that most organizations shouldn't try to change the worldview of the audience they're marketing to. Worldview is a term popularized by George Lakoff. It's the set of expectations and biases that color the way each of us see the world (before the marketer ever arrives on the scene). The worldview of a 45 year old wine-loving investment banker is very different from that of a fraternity brother. One might see a $100 bottle of burgundy as both a bargain and a must-have, while the other might see the very same bottle of wine as an insane waste of money.

In the USA, it's quite alright for media to talk endlessly about all the things the typical person can't possibly afford. Cribs, jets, jewels, dinners with Jennifer Aniston. At the same time, you're guaranteed to get negative feedback when you talk about things people have chosen not to have. If you tout a great product that only works on a Mac or a Kindle or on Android or in Norway, all the people who have chosen to use a different piece of tech or live in a different country get angry, that special kind of angry that belongs to the pampered. It's not that they don't want to buy it, it's…

The explosion of media channels and public events means that more people are being interviewed about more topics than ever before. It might even happen to you... and soon. They call it giving an interview, not taking one, and for good reason. If you're not eager to share your perspective, don't bother showing up. Questions shouldn't be taken literally. The purpose of the question is to give you a chance to talk about something you care about. The audience wants to hear what you have to say, and if the question isn't right on point, answer a different one instead. In all but the most formal…

    30 May 2011 | 2:50 am
A door is not responsible if it swings and hits you in the nose. Neither is the hand of the guy who punched you. Philosphers and lawyers talk about agency. Responsibility comes with the capacity to act in the world. If you can decide, if you can act, you have agency. Life without agency would be a nightmare. Trapped in a box, unable to do anything by choice, nothing but a puppet... Why then, do organizations and individuals struggle so intently to avoid the responsibility that comes with agency? • The Marketer’s Biggest Mistake

    30 May 2011 | 7:57 am
What we tend to do wrong when we market is we think we’re selling to ourselves. We think our buyer thinks like us. We believe that our buyer is us. Now, sometimes, that’s true to an extent. When Josh makes superhero tee shirts, he’s making shirts that he (and I) think are cool and that we like. But even then, does that mean we’ll know what a buyer who isn’t us will like? Does it mean we’ll understand why he or she won’t buy a certain shirt, or what assurances he or she needs? No. You Can Always Ask One way to know your buyer is to ask. At Kitchen…

  • Groupon’s Secret Sauce (And How to Get Yourself Some)

    Brian Clark
    1 Jun 2011 | 6:40 am
Google has a secret algorithm for ranking some web pages ahead of others. Facebook has that killer network effect — the more people use it, the more people use it (see previously: the fax machine). Amazon has selection, ease of use, and the kind of trust that can’t be bought. What secret sauce does Groupon have? Umm, email? Basically, what Groupon does is send out daily emails with straight-out pitches for local deals. Now, we here at Copyblogger are also email marketers. So are many of you. In fact, wasn’t email supposed to be dead? And yet, Groupon is set to go public soon, with…

Rao went on to criticize Quipster for a shortage of differentiation. • Getting Started With Defensive Web Design

    Ian Lurie
    27 May 2011 | 5:58 am
Nothing ruins a great website UI like people using it. At least, it often feels that way. You put in days or weeks building the interface, only to find that a vast majority of visitors abandon it partway through the process that it supports. Most of the time, visitors leave because they’ve hit a roadblock: a problem that lets them go no further. They typed their credit card number wrong or clicked the wrong link or mistyped a URL. And it’s not their fault. What exactly is meant by defensive design? Image by Richard Winchell A good design assumes that people make mistakes.

I start in Lightroom, and then I use Apple’s iPhoto software for the actual book layouts. So, I made a short video (above) that shows you how it works, and it gives you some tips on how to layout the photos themselves, no matter which program you’re using. Also, I mention in the video two links to videos I did in 2008 that show how to do similar things in Lightroom 2 (link), and Photoshop CS4 (link). Hope this helps.

Develop Presets are powerful Lightroom tools. You can use them to quick start your editing in Lightroom and to apply creative fixes to your images. Create Disconnected Presets Instead of creating a preset which, for example, applies a split toning effect as well as a vignette to an image, split this into two separate presets. Then you can use the split toning effect as well as the vignette if you want to do so but you also have the ability to apply…

I approached this book with a little scepticism: it looked like another coffee table book, large format, stacked with beautifully rendered photographs of exotic landscapes and little else. But then I skimmed David Noton’s introduction and gathered that he feels digital cameras have opened a whole new world of photographic opportunities “that would not have been possible in the film era.” He then proceeds to offer information on his working methods and philosophy. He finds colour in Morocco’s towns with a shot of a yellow-orange clad washer woman against a vibrant indigo. No filters.

Philip Elmer-DeWitt has an interesting article over at his Fortune Apple 2.0 blog that discusses Apple's restrictions on iPad and iPhone giveaways. It's not well-publicized or even strictly enforced by Apple, but the Cupertino company has a two-page policy governing the giveaway or promotion of its iOS devices. The policy prohibits you from using the word "free" as an modifier of an Apple products name in a prominent way. You still can run an iPad or iPhone giveaway, but you have to use the word free in a less prominent way and submit all the promotional materials to Apple for review. A…

Some people might have chuckled at the resemblance of Gameloft's Order and Chaos Online to the popular World of Warcraft. It's actually a near clone of the very popular Blizzard Entertainment title, squeezed down into the iPhone. But it turns out Gameloft will be the one who laughs last. The game has reportedly already brought in a million dollars in revenue, just in its first 20 days of existence. That's pretty impressive. I presume that total includes the game's actual sale price of US$6.99, along with any other in-app purchases made. Of course, that initial revenue will probably be hard to…

The P300 is interesting in the way it straddles camera classes - offering enthusiast camera features such as twin control dials and PASM shooting modes but built around a smaller sensor than its apparent peers. This smaller sensor and inability to record Raw files mark it out from the likes of the Canon S95 and Samsung's EX1 but, then again, so does its much more affordable price tag. So does this leave the P300 with the right balance of price and capability or leave it falling short of expectations? Read our concise review to find out...

In fact, you can move more than just your Develop presets – you can move all of the presets you’d create in Lightroom (Print, Slideshow, Watermarks, Metadata templates, etc…) because they’re all stored in the same folder. I hope you enjoy!
  • Lightroom 3.4.1 is Now Available

Hey folks. Last week I mentioned a rare bug in Lightroom 3.4 that had to do with JPEG photos. It only affected a very small amount of people with a certain camera though. Nonetheless, if you were one of those people then it was definitely a problem. Anyway, Adobe has quickly released an update that addresses the issue. It’s available for download now in Lightroom under the Help menu. Also, you can read more about it over at Tom Hogarty’s blog (Lightroom Product Manager).
  • Are you a Lightroom Flagger or Rater Recap

    jgilbert@photoshopuser.com (Matt Kloskowski)

Last week I wrote a post about 3 (and a half) reasons to use Flags Instead of Ratings in Lightroom. Then I asked whether or not you were flaggers or raters. I was pretty surprised at how many comments came up (over 100). So, first of all – thank you. As I’ve said before, it’s the community here that makes a site like this possible, and I’m always grateful that you spend some of your valuable time here. Since there were so many comments, I figured most of you wouldn’t (or couldn’t) have the time to read through all of them. But there was a lot of really…
  • Lightroom Public Service Announcement Day

    jgilbert@photoshopuser.com (Matt Kloskowski)
    20 May 2011 | 6:21 am
Hey folks. Thought I’d give you two quick Lightroom-related public service announcements today: 1) I realize most of you reading probably own Lightroom. If you do, you’ve also probably been telling your photography buddies that they need to get it. Well B&H Photo has Lightroom 3 on sale for $100 off. That makes it $169. Not to shabby huh? Offer ends on June 4 so tell them to download the free 30-day trial. They have plenty of time to check it out, before June 4, to see if they like it. 2) Adobe has issued a warning about a potential JPEG bug in Lightroom 3.4 and Camera Raw…
  • 3 (and a half) Reasons to Use Flags Instead of Ratings in Lightroom

Are you a flagger or a rater in Lightroom? You know, how do you sort your photos? If you’re a flagger, you go to Photo > Set Flag and choose Pick, Reject, or Unflagged. If you’re a rater then you to to Photo > Set Rating > and choose 1 to 5 stars. So which do you use? Personally, I stopped rating a long time ago and just use flags. First, I think flagging is just simpler. You’ve got 3 choices. I like it. I don’t like it. Or, I’m just not sure yet. In many cases, simple is better, and I think this is one of them. Next, when it comes to finding your…

  • Apple Still Not Budging on 'Offer Wall' Apps

    Eric Slivka
    1 Jun 2011 | 11:15 am
Back in April, Apple began cracking down on so-called "offer wall" services for iOS applications that incentivize users with virtual currency or other compensation for downloading and installing other applications. The services have been cited as a mechanism for unfairly boosting app download numbers and thus chart performance. GigaOM follows up with Mihir Shah of Tapjoy, one of the major players in the incentivized install market, and learns that Apple has yet to yield on the issue, despite several proposals by Tapjoy that the company believes would address Apple's concerns over tainted…
  • Apple Finally Trying to Acquire 'iPods.com' Domain Name

    Eric Slivka
    1 Jun 2011 | 8:22 am
TechCrunch notes that Apple has finally gotten around to trying to acquire the ipods.com domain name, fully nine years after the domain was registered by another entity. The move comes in the form of a complaint filed under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy yesterday. It apparently took the Cupertino company a little over 9 full years to decide that, instead, it should be the rightful owner of the domain name, which until earlier this morning took people to some shady mp3 download site (though it no longer resolves, it seems). Yesterday, Apple lodged a complaint, positing that…

  • Seal Teams

    Joe McNally
    1 Jun 2011 | 3:12 am
The Navy SEALs have been in the news a lot lately, something they regard as a dubious blessing, I’m sure. Navy SEAL Team Six went in and dropped a hurt on bin Laden and created a legend. You know you’ve hit the big time when Disney tries to trademark the rights to your team. The Mickey Meisters backed off when they became the centerpiece of virtually every late night comic’s routine out there. It wasn’t a good move. When the troops you can muster on your side have names like Goofy, Ariel and Tinker Bell, you should think twice about messing with the SEALs, right?
  • Welcome Summer…..

Claire at the shore….awaiting a storm. And memories of the Jersey Shore. Quite a number of years ago, a photo magazine sent me a query about my favorite place to go in the world. It was, I believe, further refined a search than that. It was, as I recall (and my memory may be a tad awry here) about my favorite place, at my favorite time of year. Something like that. They evidently sent it to numerous photogs, a survey, if you will, seeking their thoughtful, well traveled wisdom. I believe they sent it to some pretty high falutin’ shooters, and I can only imagine the responses they…

Thank goodness. It’s been a long, but fun road. It has been out for a while, of course, circulating around on this bus thing:-) But Drew, the gang here at the studio, and our friends over at Few Loose Screws, really took some time to work on a great page that has trailers, pieces of lessons, and just about everything you could want to know about the new DVD…check it out HERE, or, if you’re reading this on the blog, just scroll right and click on the Language of Light image up top for more info. Hey gang….blog’s been, well, a little light lately. Truth be told, I had a hard book deadline to meet, so I shot 13 portraits (none of which I can show here quite yet) in 17 days, then jumped on a plane and headed out to California for a Digital Landscape Workshop Series stop. Whew! In between finishing the portrait series and coming out here, I managed to spend a wonderful day with Scott Kelby and a video crew from NAPP. They started in my studio, and my garage, and shot everything about that day in the field from the conceptualization of it, to the lens selection, to the packing…
  • Louie Called Yesterday….

    Joe McNally
    3 May 2011 | 5:30 am
First thing he said was, “It’s a good day, pal.” Louie is an extraordinary guy, and an average one at the same time. Average in that he immigrated here from Italy as a youngster, and made a life, as many have done. Extraordinary in his decency, humanity and good will. On 911 all those years ago, he took extraordinary to another level. Trapped in a smoky stairwell, he slipped and slid down railings, past hundreds of terrified people, to reach a door leading to the lobby of the still standing tower. It was jammed. The lobby was filled with debris from the already collapsed…
