Property Crimes Rise In Places You Wouldn't Expect

Property Crimes Rise In Places You Wouldn't Expect Overall property crime was down in 2010, according to the latest statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation -- a piece of good, if puzzling, news for economists and crime watchers, who typically expect crime to rise when the economy is bad. The FBI reported that all categories of property crime, including burglary, larceny theft and motor-vehicle theft, declined 2.8% overall from 2009, with the biggest drop of 7.2% for stolen cars.

Yet for some smaller American towns, local statistics tell a different story. Larceny and burglary increased slightly in non-metropolitan areas, according to the report, and burglary in the northeast region is up 3.5%. Other mid-sized cities like Erie, Pa., Fresno, Calif., and Evanston, Ill., also reported increases in property crime.

Factors like high unemployment, drug-related burglaries and perhaps a sense that "crime only happens in the big city" can contribute to property crime in non-metropolitan areas, says Robert Siciliano, a home security expert and consultant with ADT Security Services. Foot traffic is a factor too: Homes in less-populated areas simply don't have the same surveillance as urban areas.

If you don't know what the property crime rate in your area is, you can map local crimes. (Also see 15 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods for Property Crime.)

Siciliano also adds that convenience stores, gas stations and other suburban and rural targets are increasingly using security systems, which can leave unsecured homes as more tempting targets. City dwellers tend to be more vigilant, have home-security systems and keep doors locked, he says. All these factors can funnel crime to the points of least resistance.

Gary Kleck, a criminology professor at Florida State University, says that security measures, including home alarms, can have the effect of shifting crime from one area to another.

"If it's like most situation-specific measures, it's effect is to displace crime from protected premises to unprotected ones, without necessarily reducing the aggregate number of crimes," says Kleck.

Studies show that even something as simple as a security sticker or lawn sign can deter a criminal from breaking into a house. But what is more important, according to Chris E. McGoey, a security expert based in Southern California, is a "mindset of caution." That means an having an awareness of your surroundings, never opening the door for strangers, talking about a plan should a robbery happen with your family, and preparing the documentation to file an insurance claim.

"Burglars love people who are oblivious and leave windows open or a door open," he says. "Or if you have someone come over for repairs, don't let them wander around without knowing anything about them."

I really feel bad for people who don't have a job. Lack of income to support their family and kids, put food on the table and to cloths on their kid(s) backs.
My house, my home, I truly feel bad for that sucker braking into my home which I just had my alarm company install a new alarm system with security cameras, hey the bad ones can even cut the electric my cable and or my phone wires and the mentor station still get notified that my alarm is going off.
I live in a great crime free neighborhood, well maybe not crime free, but nothing has happened since the last 5 years my man and I bought our home in this neighborhood.

I also live in a low crime area. Most people in this rural community have guns. That is a good security system.

What a sad and ironic commentary on our culture. You know what would prevent crime? Bringing back our jobs! When are we going to end the insanity of outsourcing good American jobs overseas? And I have to say that Florida IS becoming more and more like a third world nation. It seems that every week there are more and more homeless people panhandling on our streets. Where does it end?

I would say that the parents of children that left the city to protect their children from crime, brought the crimes to the out laying towns with them. I have, first hand, seen kids from big cities start drug trade where I live. They also started gangs. Brought their hatred of others with them. the children had been caught in some sort of trouble and the parents thought moving them to a smaller town would help the children learn not to be in these troubles. However, it was too late and they brought the troubles with them. The children were already doing the crimes and they just moved them to another location to continue the crimes. The parents are blind, it's not our kids but those we left behind. However, in real life, it is their kids that are the ones doing it. Don't believe me, then take a serious look at the new arrivals. Check their back grounds, look at where they came from and the types of crimes they were use to. Funny, how they match up almost completely.

Two thoughts...first...OK..now we know where crimes are being committed, but, it doesn't say where the criminals
are coming from??? Second...an old Jewish Joke... a fellow goes into a house in a very poor neighborhood to rob it.
The occupant wakes up, finds the robber and says..." I will tell you what....how about we both search and if we find anything we can split it!".

There isn't so much to steal with folks loosing everything. Folks loose their homes, end up selling or giving away their property that went in those homes.. End up selling stuff just to live. In the end...there is nothing to rob. Good Will and Salvation army end up with the donations. Yard sales and e-bay the possessions those folks are selling to stay afloat.

Getto, should have seen south beach in FL nothing but blacks and several shootings, over the 3 day weekend tell everyone NOT TO COME TO SOUTH FL. it is nothing more than a third world. When the heat played at the american airlines it said on the jumbo-tron latain america. they do not even speak english down here. Crime, 8 out of 10 jet ski's are stolen, can't walk the dog after dark, the best home defense is a 12 ga shotgun shoot first ask later. All one has to do is look at the prison system 90% black, and remember don't shoot the messg. it is what it is, a travisity that the government let happen!

We have to stop .........the animals from running the Zoo ! The Zoo runs the animals ... not the oher way, We need to bring in the National Guard to all crime infested areas , and make sure the kids get to school, give them orders to secure all school zones, retail zones, parks , etc . as well as neighborhoods. A M16 pointed at these thugs will get there attention .... and convince them to change there behavior or die !
